What’s The New Stimulus Check

Date:

Who Received A New Mexico Tax Rebate

House passes bill for $2,000 stimulus checks, putting GOP senators in a tough position

The July rebates went out to taxpayers who filed a 2021 New Mexico tax return and met the following income guidelines:

  • $500 to married couples filing jointly, heads of household and surviving spouses with an adjusted gross income of up to $150,000
  • $250 to single taxpayers and married couples filing separately with an adjusted gross income of up to $75,000

The July rebates were one of three payments going out to New Mexico taxpayers. The stateâs second rebate was split into two payments: one sent in May and June and a second in August. Those rebates donât have income restrictions and have been issued as follows:

  • $1,000 to married couples filing jointly, heads of household and surviving spouses, distributed as two $500 payments in June and August
  • $500 to single taxpayers and married couples filing separately, distributed as two $250 payments in June and August

Could I End Up Having To Pay Any Of It Back

Conceivably, yes.

A taxpayer may receive too much money from the advance payments in certain situations, such as a change in income or filing status, or if they no longer claim a child as a dependent.

This could cause you to owe money at tax time or reduce your refund.

But the legislation mitigates the danger in a couple of ways. First, only half of the credit is paid in advance. And the law also says that if the wrong amount was paid because of changes in the number of qualifying children, up to $2,000 per child would not need to be paid back by taxpayers who fall below certain income thresholds: $40,000 for a single taxpayer, $50,000 for a head of household, and $60,000 for joint filers. People whose income is above those thresholds may receive partial protection, which phases out as they earn more, tax experts said.

The stimulus package requires the establishment of an online portal to allow taxpayers to opt out of receiving advance payments and update information about their income, marital status and number of qualifying children.

Are 4th Stimulus Checks Really Happening

They arebut theyre not coming from the federal government like the last three stimulus checks did. This time, it all depends on what state you live in. Thats right, these fourth stimulus checks are being given out to some folks at the state and city levels now.

Back when the American Rescue Plan rolled out, all 50 states as a whole were given $195 billion to help fund their own economic recovery closer to home.1 Thats a lot of dough. But heres the catchthey dont have forever to spend that money. The states have to figure out what to spend the money on by the end of 2024, and then they have until the end of 2026 to use up all that cash.2 Those deadlines might sound super far away, but the clock is ticking here.

Idaho: $75 Rebate Payments

In February, Idaho Gov. Brad Little signed a bill that allocated $350 million for tax rebates to Idahoans. There were two criteria for eligibility:

The payments began in March. Each taxpayer received either $75 or 12% of their 2020 Idaho state taxes, whichever was greater . The rebate was applicable to each taxpayer and dependent.

The tax commission first issued rebates to taxpayers who received tax refunds via direct deposit, then sent paper rebate checks. The majority of the rebates have been issued.

In a special session on September 1, Idaho lawmakers voted to authorize another tax rebate for all residents who filed state tax returns in 2020. Individual filers will receive $300, and couples filing jointly will get $600.

Those payments started processing in late September, and about 75,000 payments will be sent out each week throughout the end of the year and into early 2023.

State residents can check their rebate status on the Idaho State Tax Commission website.

Can A Nursing Home Or Assisted Living Facility Take The Payment From Me

Stimulus Check Mailed Out April 24

No. If you qualify for a payment, its yours to keep. If a loved one qualifies and lives in a nursing home, residential care home or assisted living facility, its theirs to keep. The facility may not put their hands on it or require somebody to sign it over to them. Even if that somebody is on Medicaid.

The last time the government provided stimulus checks was in 2009 as part of the ARRA in an effort to end the 2008 recession. The details of the ARRA, however, looked different than the stimulus portion of the CARES Act:

  • Checks were only sent to recipients of Social Security, those who received Supplemental Security Income, veterans and railroad retirees.
  • The one-time check was $250.
  • Individuals with earnings between $6,450 and $75,000, however, received tax credit of 6.2 percent on earned income up to $400 in 2009 and 2010 as part of the Making Work Pay tax credit. 4

Quantitative Easing And Repo Operations

How to Get Your $1,400 Stimulus Check

On March 12, 2020, the Fed also expanded its repurchase agreementsâwhere the Fed buys assets and sells them back at a later dateâby $1.5 trillion, then added another $500 billion four days later to ensure enough liquidity in the money markets. Repo operations effectively allowed the Fed to loan money to banks.

One of the simplest asset-purchasing programs has been the QE program. The Fed directly buys assets like U.S. Treasuries and mortgage-backed securities to slowly increase the supply of money and influence inflation. The Fed, which originally created the program during the Great Recession, restarted it on March 15, 2020. The scale of the program was open-ended, with the Fed saying it would buy âin the amounts needed to support the smooth functioning of markets.â

In late 2021, the Fed started to reduce asset purchases in a process called tapering. Federal Reserve Board Chair Jerome Powell announced on Dec. 15, 2021, that the Federal Open Market Committee decided to accelerate its tapering of net new purchases of bonds, in response to a strengthening economy and rising inflation. These purchases had totaled $120 billion per month.

On Dec. 16, 2020, the Fed announced that its QE policy would continue âuntil substantial further progress has been madeâ toward inflation and employment goals. The Fed expects this progress to take years, based on projections it also released that day.

Th Stimulus Checks Given Out To Teachers

For other states, their fourth stimulus checks are taking on a new lookas teacher bonuses! Its no secret that teachers are the unsung heroes of our communities, and theyve been put through the wringer during the pandemic. To show them the appreciation that they more than deserve, some states are giving teachers a fourth stimulus.

In Florida, teachers will be getting a $1,000 bonusalthough some of the details of who qualifies are up in the air. If youre a teacher in the Sunshine State, check with your district to see if you can get in on this.15

Georgia is extending the $1,000 bonus to both full-time teachers and administrators. Part-time teachers will still score a bonus of $500, and theres even a plan in place to give a bonus to pre-K teachers.16

Earlier in 2021, Michigan used a grant to pay bonuses of $500 to its teachers and $250 to school support staff. No word yet on whether theyll give out another bonus, though.17

Our very own Tennessee is giving full-time teachers $1,000 and part-time teachers $500 to thank them for their hard work.18

Now, nothing has happened statewide yet, but some districts in the Lone Star State are giving out their own bonuses. Districts are gifting things like 24% raises, a $500 bonus, and even a $2,000 incentive for some teachers to return to the classroom.19

The Rundown On Stimulus Checks: Your Questions Answered

Just as before, taxpayers who qualify will receive a direct deposit of up to $600, and couples will receive $1,200. In addition, families will receive $600 per child under the age of 17. The payment will begin to phase out for individuals with a 2018 or 2019 adjusted gross income of $75,000, couples with a $150,000 income and head of households with a $112,500 income.1

Important to note is that the initial amount paid will be based on either a taxpayers 2018 or 2019 income tax return , but it will ultimately be trued up if a taxpayer is owed money based on their actual 2020 income. In other words, taxpayers will be given an estimated amount based on their 2019 incomes, but could end up getting even more if their 2020 return shows they made less money than they made in the previous year.

Stimulus Blamed For High Inflation

The final round of $1,400 direct payments which started in March 2021 along with the massive amounts of covid-19 relief funds injected into the US economy have been blamed for the higher-than-normal inflation afflicting the nation. The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco looked at the effect of the American Rescue Plan specifically on inflation.

It found that Bidens stimulus is temporarily ratcheting up inflation, but not causing overheating as has been suggested. Their analysis found that the ARP, is expected to cause inflation to increase by about 0.3 percentage point in 2021 and by a bit more than 0.2 percentage point in 2022. The impact in 2023 is negligible.

Other factors are helping push up prices on just about everything, a major source has been disruptions to supply chains caused by the pandemic. This caused manufacturers to scramble to secure scarce supplies of inputs to make their products. Americans in turn have been scooping up consumer goods with excess savings they acquired during the lockdown increasing demand on limited supplies.

How Likely Is A Fourth Stimulus Check

What to do with the Stimulus check?

Don’t hold your breath, according to Wall Street analysts.

For one, the Biden administration has focused on infrastructure spending to spark economic growth, betting that an investment in roads, trains and other direct investments will help get people back to work and spur the ongoing recovery.

Secondly, economists have pointed fingers at relief efforts such as the three rounds of stimulus checks for contributing to inflation. Because Americans had cash in their pockets, they boosted spending on goods such as furniture, cars and electronics. Combine that with the supply-chain crunch, and the result was sharply higher inflation, according to economists.

Without new stimulus efforts on the horizon, it’s likely that inflation could moderate in 2022, according to Brad McMillan, the chief investment officer at Commonwealth Financial Network. “One cause of inflation has been an explosion of demand driven by federal stimulus,” he noted in a December report. “But that stimulus has now ended.”

He added, “Yes, we will continue to face inflation and supply problems, but they are moderating and will keep doing so.”

% Of Americans Support The Idea Of New Stimulus Checks To Combat Sky

High inflation, rising interest rates and labor shortages have many experts and economists concerned about a looming recession.

With all this uncertainty, what is clear is that American households are struggling and could use some extra support right now.

A poll done by Newsweek shows 63% of Americans support a new round of stimulus checks from the federal government to combat inflation.

However, lawmakers in Washington have given no indication they plan to pass a fourth round of stimulus checks. And some analysts argue it will only aggravate the issue.

Handing out dollars in an inflationary environment will only make matters worse by driving prices up further, wrote Beth Akers, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, in a blog post this fall.

But that doesnt mean youre completely out of luck. Your support may just come from a government a little bit more local.

The Omicron Variant Didnt Slow Down Job Gains

Unlike last year though, when the Omicron variant pushed new infections to levels much higher than at any time during the pandemic, the US recorded significant job gains. Data collected in the middle of the surge reported 467,000 new hires, over three times what analysts had expected. Additionally, there are more job openings than there are workers available to take them pushing up wages as businesses try to attract employees.

On the other hand, 6 million people, nearly twice as many as in December, could not work or lost hours over the previous month due to the pandemic disrupting normal business at their place of employment. The incredibly fast rise in infections from the highly contagious Omicron variant fortunately appears to have reversed just as quickly.

Hawaii: $300 Rebate Payments

New Stimulus Package: Will Republicans Jeopardize Economic Recovery? – Steve Forbes | Forbes

In June, Hawaiis legislature approved sending a tax rebate to every taxpayer. Taxpayers earning less than $100,000 per year will receive $300, and those earning more than $100,000 per year will receive $100. Dependents are eligible for the rebate, too.

Taxpayers who filed their 2021 state income tax returns by July 31, 2022, should have received their returns in September, and those who requested paper checks should have received them by October 31. Taxpayers who filed their returns after July 31 should receive their check up to 10 weeks after their return is accepted by the tax department.

How Do You Qualify For Stimulus In 2022

Qualifying for a stimulus check depends on if you live in a state issuing stimulus checks and if you met the state’s criteria. For instance, Colorado is giving a tax rebate of $750 and $1,500 to filers if they were 18 before Dec. 31, 2021, filed a state tax return for 2021 and were residents for the entire 2021 tax year.

Bringing Inflation Under Control Is The Goal

Over the course of 2021, many economists and policymakers at the Federal Reserve felt that the higher-than-normal inflation would be temporary. However, as the level of inflation continued to rise to new heights by the end of the year the consensus shifted, and the central bank decided to be more hawkish.

In January the Fed announced that it would begin tapering its stimulus programs which have poured vast amounts of liquidity into the US economy. It has also helped the stock market reach ever greater heights.

Additionally, the central bankers will start increasing interest rates, expected to begin in March, which have been at near zero during the pandemic. The Fed will have a difficult balancing act to pace the fiscal tightening without entrenching inflation by moving too slow or causing a recession if it moves too fast.

Although another stimulus check could help people with the rising cost of living, the fear of driving inflation even higher by injecting even more money into the economy has silenced lawmakers calls to do so.
