What If I Owe Child Support Payments Back Taxes Money To Creditors Or Debt Collectors Or Federal Or State Debt

IRS Sending Out ‘Plus-Up’ Stimulus Checks To Those Underpaid

Both the first and second stimulus check cannot be reduced to pay any federal or state debts. Unlike the first stimulus check, your second stimulus check cannot be reduced if you owe past-due child support payments and is protected from garnishment by creditors and debt collectors.

If you use direct deposit and owe your bank overdraft fees, the bank may deduct these from your payment.

If you are claiming the payments as part of your 2020 tax refund , the payments are no longer protected from past-due child support payments, creditor and debt collectors, and other federal or state debt that you owe . In other words, if you receive your first and second stimulus checks as part of your tax refund instead of direct checks, it may be reduced.

I Get Ssi Should I Spend The Stimulus Money Within A Year What Can I Spend It On

Spend down your CARES Act EIP money before 12 months have passed since receiving the payment. You are not limited in what you can spend the money on. You can spend down on whatever you wish, including on gifts and charitable contributions. If you dont spend it within 12 months, the Social Security Administration will count the money as a resource.

Fourth Stimulus Check Update

Bidens American Rescue Plan Act, which created the third stimulus checks, did boost tax credits for most parents with children under 18, but only for the year 2021. Most parents and legal guardians will receive a tax credit of $3,600 for children under six, and $3,000 per child aged six through 17.

Half of that credit is coming in the form of monthly advance payments to parents beginning July 15 $300 per month for younger kids, and $250 for older ones. Thats similar to the monthly recurring checks that some legislators have called for.

The same law also retroactively exempted a large chunk of unemployment benefits paid out in 2020 from federal income tax. People who collected unemployment in 2020 and paid tax on it are getting thousands of dollars in tax-refund checks.

The American Rescue Plan Act also offers tax credits that cover all or most of the cost of a Silver health-insurance plan for six months under the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare. Youre eligible for this if you filed for unemployment benefits at any time in 2021, and if you dont currently get health insurance through Medicare, Medicaid or someone elses health plan.

Bidens American Families Plan, which is separate from the American Jobs Plan, will seek to extend those tax credits, including the advance payments, through the end of 2025.

The American Families Plan would also mandate up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave and subsidies for childcare.

Understand Inflation And How It Affects You

The arrival of the extra $600 depends on when your state signed an agreement with the Department of Labor. The week ending April 4 or 5 is the first week for which unemployed workers can claim the new federal benefit.

But that doesnt necessarily mean benefits will flow right away. States that are unable to immediately pay the federal pandemic benefit after they sign agreements will pay them retroactively for the weeks youre entitled to receive them.

Are benefits taxable?

Yes. Benefits are subject to federal income taxes and most state income taxes, according to the Department of Labor. The same goes for the $600. You should be able to elect to have taxes withheld.

Child support obligations can also be deducted from your benefits.

If I Am The Custodial Parent And Ive Neverreceivedtanf Or Medicaid For My Child Will I Receive Any Money From A Tax Return Intercepted By The Federal Government From The Noncustodial Parent On My Case

  • Maybe. If the noncustodial parent owes you child support arrears and the total arrears onall ofthe noncustodial parents cases meets the threshold amounts indicated in Questions #2, then you should be entitled to receive monies intercepted from the noncustodial parents tax return. The amount of the money you receive will depend on a number of factors, including the amount of the tax return intercepted, the amounts owed to you in your case, and the number of other child support cases in which the noncustodial parent owes child support arrears. You must also have a full-service case open with the Child Support Division to be entitled to receive any monies from an intercepted federal tax return.

What Is The New Child Tax Credit Amount

Stimulus Checks: How Much You

Heres how the numbers break down: The American Rescue Plan bumps the Child Tax Credit up to $3,000 for children ages 617 and $3,600 for children under age 6.3 Expecting a baby in 2021? First of all, congrats! And heres some more good news for youbabies born in 2021 will qualify for the full $3,600. Have a college student? Parents can receive a one-time payment of $500 for each full-time college kid ages 1824.4

So, for a family that has three children , heres how it all breaks down:

Lets say they have three kids that are ages 12, 7 and 4 and a household income of $72,000 a year. Their new Child Tax Credit would be $9,600.

But remember, instead of applying the full amount of the credit to income taxes they might owe or getting a refund after they file their taxes, parents can get the credit up front in monthly payments of $250 for each qualifying child .5 So that family of three in our example would get $800 a month from July through December. Wow!

Right now, this change would be only for 2021but theres talk in Congress and the White House to make it a permanent thing for the next five years under Bidens American Families Plan. Yep, there are a lot of plans and acts to keep straight these days.

Avoid Processing Delays When Claiming The 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit

The IRS strongly encourages people to have all the information they need to file an accurate return to avoid processing delays. If the return includes errors or is incomplete, it may require further review while the IRS corrects the error, which may slow the tax refund.

To claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, individuals will need to know the total amount of their third-round Economic Impact Payment, including any Plus-Up Payments, they received. People can view the total amount of their third-round Economic Impact Payments through their individual Online Account. The IRS will also send Letter 6475 through March to those who were issued third-round payments confirming the total amount for tax year 2021. For married individuals filing a joint return with their spouse, each spouse will need to log into their own Online Account or review their own letter for their portion of their coupleâs total payment.

Indiana $325 Rebate Payments

If you live in the state of Indiana, consider yourself lucky because, similar to Georgia, this state had a budget surplus at the end of 2021 and decided to give back to its citizens in the form of 2 refunds.

Indiana taxpayers might expect a one-time reimbursement of $125 after filing their 2021 returns, as Governor Eric Holcomb said in December 2021.

If you want to qualify, there is no minimum income necessary to do it. However, in order to be eligible for this rebate payment, you must have submitted your 2020 state income tax return by January 3rd, 2022, and your 2021 Indiana income tax return by April 18th, 2022. In conformity with a state resource website, the state began its payments in May.

If both spouses filed taxes together, they would each get a single deposit that is worth $250. In August 2022, it was decided to give out another refund of $200 to each taxpayer.

Typically, refunds will be paid out in 2 installments, with the second payment beginning to go out to taxpayers in late August 2022. You will be issued a paper check if your bank information has changed or if direct deposit information is not on file.

The first mailing was delayed for many months due to a problem with the printing process, but it finally restarted around the middle of August. After that date, each taxpayer will get one check for the full $325 value of both rebates.

If you need any additional information, check out the states Department of Revenue website.

How Do I Claim These Benefits

The IRS is urging people who believe they are eligible for the tax credits but haven’t filed a tax return to go ahead and file a return with the tax agency, even if they haven’t yet received a letter from the IRS. But the deadline for filing a return to claim these benefits is Thursday, November 17.

“The IRS reminds people that there’s no penalty for a refund claimed on a tax return filed after the regular April 2022 tax deadline,” the IRS said.

There are a few ways people can claim the benefits:

  • File a return with Free File before November 17, 2022. Free File is available to people who earn less than $73,000.
  • File a simplified 2021 tax return through GetCTC before November 15, 2022.

The IRS said it urges people to file their tax form electronically and to choose direct deposit in order to get their tax credits as soon as possible.
