If You Didnt Get Your First Check
The IRS used your 2019 income tax return to determine your AGI. If youve moved since filing that return, that is the only address they have on file for you. If you received a refund for 2019 and had that refund deposited directly into your bank account, thats the last bank account the IRS has on file. That means that if youve changed banks since that time, they likely sent your stimulus check to the last bank on record. By law, banks are required to send those checks back to the IRS.
If youre missing either of your stimulus checks, its not too late to make a claim. Fill out the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax form to let the IRS know that funds are still owed. If you owe taxes for 2020, the government will keep your rebate to cover them. For example, if you owe $2,000 but missed out on the $600 stimulus check, the IRS will keep the $600, and your tax bill will drop to $1,400. On the other hand, if you are due a tax refund, the IRS will add the rebate to your refund.
The good news is that we know for sure there is another round of stimulus in the pipeline. Right now, our best guess is that it should reach you within three weeks of the day Congress passes stimulus legislation.

Whats Next For State Stimulus Checks
Even with all these measures making their way through various legislatures, Americans remain crunched between what they need and what they can afford.
And while gas rebates and stimulus checks can help buffer the blow of rising prices, there are those who remain leery of sending out additional payments, especially with past pandemic relief programs believed to have contributed to our current rate of inflation.
Jaime Peters, assistant dean and assistant professor of finance at Maryville University in St. Louis, explains that for some lawmakers, inflation-related stimulus payments will simply feed the beast, putting even more money into the market where the supply of goods cant meet demand.
This creates a conundrum for families who are coming up short on the supply of funds to get the goods they need each day.

When Is The Next Stimulus Check Released
MILLIONS of Americans have gotten stimulus payments in the past two years, but is a fourth check on the way?
The short answer – probably not.
The direct payments were intended to help struggling citizens and stimulate the economy by giving them more money to spend during the financial downturn.
As a result of the pandemic, we saw multiple stimulus check packages passed across the nation.
Since federal stimulus seems to be over, states have stepped up and offered rebates and other direct payments to help those struggling.
Almost 20 states have sent or will be sending checks to offset rising inflation.

How Much Money Is Coming
This next stimulus payment will also bring the same amount of money that recipients got last time. For every child between the ages of six through 17, each of the six monthly checks will include $250. The amount is $300/month for each child under age six.
If you add up all six of those checks you receive, you will also get that amount again next year. Just as a single lump sum, instead. It will come in the form of a tax credit when you file your federal taxes in 2022.

When To Expect Your Next Stimulus Check
The best predictor of how quickly you might see your next check is how quickly the first two arrived in your bank account or mailbox. It took the IRS a mere 19 days after the first stimulus bills passage to send out millions of checks. When tasked with sending another round in December, the IRS was again able to pull it off in less than three weeks.
Congress is under a deadline, with existing pandemic benefits set to lapse in mid-March. In short, if they dont have another stimulus package passed by then, millions of their constituents are going to lose benefits that are helping them put food on the table and a roof over their heads. Thats going to be a tough sell back home.
If Congress votes a package through by the end of February, that means that checks should be in millions of accounts by the third week of March. If passage comes in the 11th hour , that pushes the expected date back to the first week of April.
These estimates are based on the supposition that the IRS can manage a quick turnaround in the heart of tax season. At this point, there is nothing to indicate that they cant pull it off.
Hawaii: $300 Rebate Payments
In June, Hawaiis legislature approved sending a tax rebate to every taxpayer. Taxpayers earning less than $100,000 per year will receive $300, and those earning more than $100,000 per year will receive $100. Dependents are eligible for the rebate, too.
Taxpayers who filed their 2021 state income tax returns by July 31, 2022, should have received their returns in September, and those who requested paper checks should have received them by October 31. Taxpayers who filed their returns after July 31 should receive their check up to 10 weeks after their return is accepted by the tax department.

New $1400 Stimulus Check Coming Soon
Giving birth this year is the deciding factor, as far as who gets one of these new payments or not. Parents who welcome a newborn child at any point in 2021 are likely eligible for another stimulus payment, for $1,400, in 2022, according to both Fortune and Insider. They would get that check upon filing their federal taxes in 2022.
The way things stand now, what that also appears to mean is that parents would not only get that $1,400 check. But any parent who welcomes a newborn child in 2021 also likely qualifies for the temporarily expanded child tax credit. We say likely, because theres still an income threshold. Sorry millionaires, not you!
As weve explained on numerous occasions now, the latter was made possible by the $1.9 trillion stimulus law from earlier this year. However, depending on when the child is born such as if its in late December? For those parents, it would be too late to have this years monthly child tax credit checks reflect that change. In which case, the parents would get the money next year, after filing their taxes in 2022.

If you have not received all or some portion of your Economic Impact Payments by the deadlines above, you will have to file a 2020 tax return and claim these amounts. You claim them on line 30 of the 2020 Form 1040 as a Recovery Rebate Credit. This is another name for the EIP stimulus payments. If you did not get all or a portion of the EIP payments in advance, then you can claim them on line 30 of your tax return for 2020.

Most Americans received their full Economic Impact Payment â or third stimulus check â in 2021, but itâs possible you could have more money coming. If you had a baby last year or added a qualifying child to your family, youâre eligible for another $1,400. If your income changed significantly in 2021, you could also be owed more money.
The IRS finished mailing the third checks in January, but those entitled to more money can claim whatâs called the recovery rebate credit on their 2021 tax returns when they file this tax season. The catch is that youâll need a specific IRS notice to do that.
Letter 6475, Your Third Economic Impact Payment, was mailed to recipients of the third stimulus check starting in late January. Itâs considered the official record of your stimulus payments for all of 2021. The letter helps determine if youâre owed more money via the recovery rebate credit. Even if you donât qualify for more money, you still need the letter to report stimulus money on your tax return.

Dont Expect Congress To Pass A Fourth Covid
While some progressive activists are pushing for another check, neither Democratic nor Republican leadership is on board with another direct payment. The same goes for President Biden: When asked about it earlier this year, White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that a fourth check wasnt on the administrations to-do list, and noted the checks were not free. Shes right: Stimulus checks dont come cheap. The last round of $1,400 checks cost the federal government around $400 billion. For comparison, the combined GDP of North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Montana, Alaska, Wyoming, and Vermont is just above $350 billion.
Secondly, the economy is doing much better now. Since May 2020, the economy has added 17.4 million jobs. The September unemployment rate of 4.8% is slightly below the 5% figure that economists have historically considered full employment. And its a far cry from the 14.8% rate hit in April 2020.
Simply put, the odds of Congress passing a fourth stimulus check are close to zero.

Check with your dependent to find out if theyve already filed a tax return since their dependent status ended. They may have already received a stimulus payment of their own. What If I Havent Gotten My Stimulus Check Yet
First, head over to the governments Get My Payment site to check in on your payment status. If it shows the stimulus check was issued to you, but you havent gotten it yet, you can run a payment trace to track it down. If the check wasnt cashed, the IRS will reverse the payment, and youll be able to claim it on your taxes. You can do this through the Recovery Rebate Credit.
If the check was cashed , youll have to make a claim and go through a whole process to get your stimulus money. That really stinks. Sorry in advance if you fall into that category. But with any luck, they should be able to straighten things out for you.
People Who Dont File A Tax Return
Question: What if I donât file a 2019 or 2020 tax return?
Answer: Some people donât file a tax return because their income doesnât reach the filing requirement threshold. If thatâs the case, the IRS will send a third stimulus check based on whatever information, if any, is available to it. That information potentially could come from the Social Security Administration, Railroad Retirement Board, or Veterans Administration if youâre currently receiving benefits from one of those federal agencies. If thatâs the case, youâll generally receive your third stimulus payment the same way that you get your regular benefits. If you supplied the IRS information last year through its online Non-Filers tool or by submitting a special simplified tax return, the tax agency can use that information, too.
Some people who receive a third stimulus check based on information from the SSA, RRB, or VA may still want to file a 2020 tax return even if they arenât required to file to get an additional payment for a spouse or dependent.

Well, you may already have gotten it. How you get your stimulus check could influence how soon your payment arrives. The IRS portal can also flag if theres a problem with your payment that you may need to address, but it doesnt tell you the amount youll receive. Instead, the payment arrived through a non-Direct Express bank account or as a paper check, if you didnt have your bank account information on file with the IRS. Others would have received it in the mail. Even tiny errors can cause a delay in you receiving your full or partial payment. If that money didnt arrive, its possible you might have had a payment garnished for child support or funds diverted to pay a specific kind of creditor, but the rules changed with a second check. If you filed your taxes early and you know your tax return was already processed , your total will likely be based on your adjusted gross income , not on your AGI. However, with this third check, the IRS said Social Security and other federal beneficiaries will likely receive the new payment the same way as their usual benefits, noting it will announce a payment date for this group shortly.
So when will you receive your direct payment? Well, you may already have gotten it. All recipients of the first batch have access to the funds as of Wednesday, according to the release.
Stimulus Checks: Where Do We Stand On More Payments
There was no timeline given on if and when the legislation would be considered or how long it would take to implement the new programs if the bills were to be approved.
Congress is in recess through the middle of September. And when lawmakers return, theyll likely continue working on a $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure plan and a $3.5 trillion budget plan for bolstering family services, health, and environment programs.
The White House and leaders in Congress have not given any indication a fourth payment will be approved, and theres been little other movement aside from online petitions and letters from lawmakers to President Joe Biden.
A change.org petition that was started more than a year ago by a restaurant owner calling for targeted stimulus money has gotten over 2.8 million signatures. The petition calls for payments of $2,000 for each and $1,000 for each child until the pandemic is over.
Meanwhile, several Democrats have written letters to Biden asking for more relief. Some of those letters reportedly advocated for multiple rounds of stimulus checks until the economy rebounds.
But the Biden administration has signaled the president was focused on putting people back to work rather than short-term relief.
