Heres How To Claim The Payment On Your Tax Return
Those who believe they are due more money must file a 2021 tax return, even if they dont usually file taxes, and claim whats called the Recovery Rebate Credit. If a taxpayer is eligible for more money, it will either reduce any tax the personowes for 2021 or be included in a tax refund.
In order to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit, a taxpayer will need information that was sent in a letter from the IRS in the past couple of months. Known as Letter 6475, it confirms whether a taxpayer was sent a third stimulus payment and the amount. Alternatively, that information can be obtained by accessing your IRS online account.
For most taxpayers, the federal tax return filing deadline is April 18, though its a day later for residents of Maine and Massachusetts. Taxpayers having difficulty meeting the deadline can file for an automatic six-month extension by using Form 4868.

Second Round Of Direct Payments: December 2020
The second round of aid, a $900 billion package which was part of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 was signed off by Trump on 27 December 2020. It provided a one-off check of up to $600, but this time, households were also able to claim an additional $600 for child dependents aged 16 or under. Those who earned under $75,000 in the 2019 tax year received the full stimulus check, while a steadily smaller figure was given to those on a higher annual income, up to a maximum phase-out limit of $87,000. The first payments, through direct deposit and paper checks with some later payments made by EIP 2 Cards, were issued between 29 December 2020 and 15 January 2021.
Those who didnt receive a stimulus payment either through the CARES Act or the December Covid-19 Relief bill were able to claim for it retroactively when they filed their federal tax returns for 2020 through the IRS Recovery Rebate Credit.

How Are Americans Using Stimulus Checks
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York says that households are spending a smaller percentage of their stimulus checks and saving more. The that households set aside just under 25% of their third-round payments for consumption. This share fell from just over 29% of first-round payments reported in June 2020 and almost 26% of second-round payments reported in January 2021.
The table below is based on all three SCE surveys and breaks down the average percentage of stimulus payments spent, saved and used to pay off debt:
New York Fed SCE Breakdown of Stimulus Check Spending | |
Payment Round | |
37.4% | 33.7% |
The New York Fed also says that households expect to spend an average 13% of the third stimulus check on essential items and an average 8% on non-essential items.
For a comparison, preliminary data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau from shows that the majority of stimulus recipients are almost three times more likely to use checks to pay down debt than add to their savings.
An earlier showed that the majority of recipients who got the first stimulus check spent their payment on household expenses. Adults with incomes between $75,000 and $99,999 told the Census that they would most likely pay off debt or add to their savings. While adults making less than $25,000 said they would use their stimulus to pay for expenses.
For those households that spent their first stimulus checks, the study says:
What If The Irs Didn’t Send Me The Full Amount For The First Or Second Stimulus Payment

According to the IRS, people who receive Social Security retirement, SSDI, SSI and Railroad Retirement benefits, as well as Veterans Affairs beneficiaries, were automatically eligible for the first two stimulus payments. If you receive these federal benefits as your only form of income, you weren’t required to file a federal income tax return in 2018 or 2019. Under the CARES Act, you should have received a stimulus check automatically.
If that money didn’t arrive, it’s possible you might have had a payment garnished for child support or funds diverted to pay a specific kind of creditor, but the rules changed with the second check. However, an IRS error could also be a potential culprit or the IRS may have needed more information about your eligibility.
To receive your money now, you need to claim the additional amount as part of tax season 2020, using the Recovery Rebate Credit. Even if you don’t usually file taxes, you’ll have to file to get the funds. The deadline for filing your 2020 taxes was extended to May 17, 2021.
In some cases — if you received a letter from the IRS confirming that your payment was sent, but you never actually got the money, for instance — you may need to contact the IRS to request a payment trace.
The IRS says you can create and then check an IRS account to see more information about your eligibility around the first two stimulus payments.

Third Stimulus Check Of $1400 Will Be Passed Before End Of February Nancy Pelosi Says
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday said that Joe Biden‘s stimulus package, which includes a third relief check of $1,400 to eligible Americans, will be passed by Congress “before the end of February.”
Former President Donald Trump signed a $900 billion relief package into law in late December, which included federal unemployment benefits that will lapse on March 14. Lawmakers have set that date as an unofficial deadline to approve further coronavirus aid.
The Senate backed Biden’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan early Friday morning, with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the tie-breaking vote on a budget resolution. It will allow Democrats to pass the measure without Republican support.
The House will now need to approve the amendments in another vote to deliver the bill, and Pelosi has expressed confidence that Congress will pass the legislation before March 14.
“Absolutely. Without any question. Before then,” she said at a press conference on Friday.
Pelosi explained that Democrats will “begin working on the specifics of the bill” on Monday. “Hopefully in two weeks time we’ll send something over to the Senate and this will be done long before the expiration of initiatives,” she said, adding that Congress will “finish our work before the end of February.”
Biden vowed that the package will include $1,400 individual payments after Senate Republicans pushed to shrink the amount during negotiations.
Highlights Of The Third Round Of Economic Impact Payments Irs Will Automatically Calculate Amounts
In general, most people will get $1,400 for themselves and $1,400 for each of their qualifying dependents claimed on their tax return. As with the first two Economic Impact Payments in 2020, most Americans will receive their money without having to take any action. Some Americans may see the direct deposit payments as pending or as provisional payments in their accounts before the official payment date of March 17.
Because these payments are automatic for most eligible people, contacting either financial institutions or the IRS on payment timing will not speed up their arrival. Social Security and other federal beneficiaries will generally receive this third payment the same way as their regular benefits. A payment date for this group will be announced shortly.
The third round of Economic Impact Payments will be based on the taxpayer’s latest processed tax return from either 2020 or 2019. This includes anyone who successfully registered online at IRS.gov using the agency’s Non-Filers tool last year, or alternatively, submitted a special simplified tax return to the IRS. If the IRS has received and processed a taxpayer’s 2020 return, the agency will instead make the calculation based on that return.
For those who received EIP1 or EIP2 but don’t receive a payment via direct deposit, they will generally receive a check or, in some instances, a prepaid debit card . A payment will not be added to an existing EIP card mailed for the first or second round of stimulus payments.

Is There A Deadline To Get My Third Stimulus Check
If you will be filing a full tax return, you have until the IRS closes their tax filing software on November 20, 2021. After this date, you can still claim the third stimulus check in 2022 by filing your taxes for Tax Year 2021.
If youre not required to file taxes, the deadline to use GetCTC.org is November 15, 2022. You can get the Recovery Rebate Credit using GetCTC.org, a simplified tax filing portal for non-filers. GetCTC is an IRS-approved service created by Code for America in partnership with the White House and U.S. Department of Treasury. You can use the portal even if youre not signing up for the Child Tax Credit advance payments.
How Are Married Couples Affected If Only One Spouse Has A Social Security Number
As with EIP2, joint filers where only one spouse has a valid Social Security number will normally get an EIP3. A valid SSN for EIP3 is one that is issued by the Social Security Administration before the due date of your tax return .
For taxpayers who file jointly with their spouse and only one of them has a valid SSN, the spouse with a valid SSN will receive a payment of up to $1,400 and up to $1,400 for each qualifying dependent claimed on the 2020 tax return.

Determining Eligibility For The Third Economic Impact Payment
Most eligible people will get the third Economic Impact Payment automatically and won’t need to take additional action. The IRS will use available information to determine eligibility and issue the third payment to eligible people who:
- Filed a 2020 tax return.
- Filed a 2019 tax return if the 2020 return has not been submitted or processed yet.
- Did not file a 2020 or 2019 tax return but registered for the first Economic Impact Payment using the special Non-Filers portal last year.
- Are federal benefit recipients as of December 31, 2020, who do not usually file a tax return and received Social Security and Railroad Retirement Board benefits, Supplemental Security Income and Veteran benefit recipients in 2020. The IRS is working with these agencies to get updated information for 2021 to assist with stimulus payments at a date to be determined. IRS.gov will have more details.
Who Is Eligible For The Third Economic Impact Payment And What Incomes Qualify
Generally, anyone who is a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien is eligible. You will get the full amount of the third Economic Impact Payment if you are not a dependent of another taxpayer, have a valid Social Security number , and your AGI on your tax return does not exceed:
- $150,000 if married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower
- $112,500 if filing as head of household or
- $75,000 for eligible individuals using any other filing status, such as single filers and married people filing separate returns.
Payments will be phased out or reduced above those AGI amounts. This means taxpayers will not receive a third payment if their AGI exceeds:
- $160,000 if married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower
- $120,000 if filing as head of household or
- $80,000 for eligible individuals using any other filing status, such as single filers and married people filing separate returns.

A married couple with two dependents and an AGI of $155,000 will generally get a payment of $2,800 . Filers with incomes of at least $80,000 , $120,000 , and $160,000 will get no payment based on the law.

How Will I Be Receiving My Third Stimulus Check
If you didn’t submit a 2019 or 2020 tax return or used the Non-Filers tool in 2020 and you receive your monthly Social Security benefits by Direct Express card, it’s likely your third payment will be added to your Direct Express card, according to the Social Security Administration and this informational PDF from Direct Express. Note that you’ll receive one free withdrawal in addition to your usual free monthly withdrawal for monthly benefits.
For the first two 2020 stimulus payments, most SSI and SSDI recipients received them through a non-Direct Express bank account or as a paper check if they didn’t have current bank account information on file with the IRS. The IRS said SSI and SSDI recipients should have gotten their latest round of stimulus money the same way they received their earlier payments, including Direct Express for some.

Can My Third Stimulus Check Be Garnished For Unpaid Debt Or Taxes
These payments are protected from all federal and state offset. That means you’ll get the full amount you qualify for even if you have past-due federal or state debt, such as child support, or you owe taxes from previous years.
But, because Congress used a process called “budget reconciliation” to pass this stimulus bill which only allows certain types of legislation to pass through Congress private collectors will have the right to garnish stimulus check money that lands in your bank account to cover unpaid debts. This is different from the previous $600 stimulus check, which had protections against garnishment.
Several consumer and banking trade groups signed a letter to Congress pushing for legislation to protect the new stimulus check funds from garnishment.
“We believe it is imperative that Congress ensure that these next stimulus payments are treated as ‘benefits’ subject to the federal exemption from garnishment,” the groups wrote. “Otherwise, the families that most need this money those struggling with debt and whose entire bank accounts may be frozen by garnishment orders will be not be able to access their funds.”
I Didn’t File A 2019 Or 2020 Tax Return And Didn’t Register With The Irsgov Non
Yes, if you meet the eligibility requirements. While you won’t receive an automatic payment now, you can still get all three payments . File a 2020 return and claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for the EIP1 and EIP2 amounts. This return will then be used to generate an EIP3 payment.
The IRS urges people who don’t normally file a tax return and haven’t received any stimulus payments to look into their filing options. The IRS will continue reaching out to non-filers so that as many eligible people as possible receive the stimulus payments they’re entitled to.
The IRS encourages people to file electronically, and the tax software will help figure the correct stimulus amount, which is called the Recovery Rebate Credit on 2020 tax forms. When Will The Payments Be Disbursed
Biden said some of the payments could be disbursed later in March. The IRS began sending out the previous round of stimulus payments within a few days of the last relief bill’s passage in December.
Like the other two payments, taxpayers can track the status of their payments with IRS Get My Payment tool. Just note that that tool has been glitchy in the past, and can be overwhelmed when too many people try to use it at once.
Which Tax Return Is Used For My Third Stimulus Check
The IRS uses 2019 or 2020 tax returns to determine eligibility for your third stimulus check. You should note that if your income fell in the 2020 tax year, filing your tax return earlier could help you qualify for a bigger third stimulus check. The new stimulus plan targets lower income ranges to exclude higher-earning taxpayers from getting a payment.
As we pointed out before, individuals making under $75,000 get the maximum stimulus payment of $1,400 . But payments are capped at $80,000 for single filers and $160,000 for couples. So filing at the beginning of the tax season with a lower income may help you qualify for a bigger check. But, if your income went up in tax year 2020, then you may want to delay filing so that eligibility is determined by your lower 2019 income.
You might also want to file early if the size of your family increased in 2020. The new stimulus plan includes a child tax credit that pays up to $3,600 for each qualifying child under 6 years old, and $3,000 for every child between ages 6 and 17. This means that if you became a parent during the tax year, you could get an additional payment by claiming your child as a dependent earlier.
