When Will The Third Stimulus Check Be Issued

Third Stimulus Checks: When and How Will You Get $1,400?

The government started sending the third stimulus checks on March 12, 2021. The IRS continues to send third stimulus checks as people submit their information to the IRS either by filing a 2020 tax return or using GetCTC.org. The deadline to use GetCTC.org is November 15, 2022.

If you have your banking information on file, the IRS sent your payment via direct deposit. Otherwise, you will receive your payment as a check or debit card via mail. Mailed checks and debit cards may take longer to deliver.

If you dont fall into any of these categories, youll have to wait to receive your third stimulus check. You will need to file a 2020 federal tax return to get the third stimulus check or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.

You can also get the first and second stimulus check as the Recovery Rebate Credit on your tax return or GetCTC.org if you are eligible.

Avoid Processing Delays When Claiming The 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit

The IRS strongly encourages people to have all the information they need to file an accurate return to avoid processing delays. If the return includes errors or is incomplete, it may require further review while the IRS corrects the error, which may slow the tax refund.

To claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, individuals will need to know the total amount of their third-round Economic Impact Payment, including any Plus-Up Payments, they received. People can view the total amount of their third-round Economic Impact Payments through their individual Online Account. The IRS will also send Letter 6475 through March to those who were issued third-round payments confirming the total amount for tax year 2021. For married individuals filing a joint return with their spouse, each spouse will need to log into their own Online Account or review their own letter for their portion of their couple’s total payment.

The IRS urges recipients of stimulus payments to carefully review their tax return before filing. Having this payment information available while preparing the tax return will help individuals determine if they are eligible to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit for missing third-round stimulus payments. If eligible for the credit, they must file a 2021 tax return. Using the total amount of the third payments from the individual’s online account or Letter 6475 when filing a tax return can reduce errors and avoid delays in processing while the IRS corrects the tax return.

How To Claim Your Recovery Rebate Credit

A reminder: The IRS will not automatically calculate any Recovery Rebate Credit amount for which you may be entitled when you file.

Individuals must claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 income tax return in order to get this money, the IRS said in its fact sheet.

To see if you are eligible for a payment, you can find more information on the Recovery Rebate Credit on the agencys website.

If you have no income or up to $73,000 in income, you can file your federal tax return for free using the IRS Free File program.

For people who already received their third stimulus checks, there is no need to include information on those payments in their 2021 returns, according to the IRS.

If you are still missing a first or second stimulus check that was sent by the government in 2020, you will have to file a 2020 tax return rather than claim that money on your 2021 return, according to the IRS.

Heres Who May Still Be Eligible For Up To $16 Billion In Stimulus Checks

Thousands of Americans may still be owed a third government stimulus check a payment of $1,400 per eligible taxpayer that was authorized by the American Rescue Act in 2021.

About 645,000 potentially eligible people hadnt gotten a third stimulus check by the middle of September 2021, according to a new report from the Treasury Departments Inspector General for Tax Administration. Some of those people received checks after September, but the report didnt identify how many of those taxpayers have received their payments since then.

The amount of the unpaid stimulus checks isnt small, with the Treasury estimating the balance at $1.6 billion.

To be sure, the bulk of payments from the third round of stimulus checks have been distributed, with the IRS sending checks to more than 175 million taxpayers. But some people may have fallen through the cracks, while the current tax season may provide an opportunity for them to claim the overdue payment.

The IRS on March 30 said it is no longer issuing first-, second-, or third-round stimulus checks. But taxpayers who missed a check or didnt get the amount they were entitled to can claim the extra payment as a Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2020 or 2021 federal tax return, the agency said.
