Where Things Stand On The New Stimulus Checks

$1,400 stimulus check update: When could you get your third payment? | FOX 5 DC

The new, $1,400 payments are part of President Joe Bidens $1.9 trillion pandemic rescue package. Its packed with a wide variety of other aid, including $400 a week in bonus unemployment benefits.

The Democrats who control Congress have Bidens plan zooming in the fast lane using a special process that would allow it to pass with simple majorities meaning with no Republican support, if it comes to that.

But one possible roadblock under that scenario is West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, who has said only the neediest Americans should get the full $1,400. Democrats hold the Senate by a razor-thin margin and will need every vote from their side, including Manchins.

The current legislation would phase out payments for Americans making over $75,000 a year, same as with the earlier stimulus checks. Manchin has preferred a $50,000 threshold and says he wants proof that people making $75,000 are truly in need.

Last spring, most recipients spent their first $1,200 stimulus check on essential needs, including groceries and rent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has said.

A portion of the cash also was used for saving and investing, a bureau survey found, or for other, unspecified things possibly to buy affordable life insurance. Demand for life insurance policies has surged amid COVID.

When Was $600 Stimulus Issued

When and how will the money be sent? Recipients may have seen a direct deposit pending in their bank account as early as December 29, but the funds became officially available . Paper checks or debit cards will be sent to those who dont already have a bank account on file with the Internal Revenue Service.

What To Do If You Cant Find Your Stimulus Check

If your IRS online account shows that you should have received a stimulus payment, but you didnât get it, thereâs a chance it could have been lost in the mail. Or you might have thrown away the prepaid debit card you received.

If you lost your stimulus check or suspect it was stolen, you can request the IRS trace your payment. If the IRS determines your check hasnât been cashed, it will issue a credit to your account. It canât reissue your payment, but you can claim the payment on your 2021 tax return using the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit worksheet.

If a trace is initiated and the IRS determines that the check wasnât cashed, the IRS will credit your account for that payment. However, the IRS canât reissue your payment. Instead, you will need to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 tax return if eligible.

If you lost your EIP card, a prepaid debit card on which some individuals received their stimulus payment, contact card issuer MetaBank to request a replacement.

Social distancing, remote learning, stimulus paymentsthe COVID-19 pandemic introduced us all to lots of new concepts.

And while the 6-foot rule has gone out the window , stimulus checks have hung around. But instead of a stimulus for pandemic relief, state politicians are now cutting stimulus checks to help ease the pain of record-high inflation and gas prices. And theres even talk of a federal inflation stimulus check.

So, is more stimulus money coming your way? Lets take a look.

Round Three: Will This Be The Last Stimulus Check

Why That First $1,200 Stimulus Check Might Be the Last You See For ...

As the IRS sends out the third batch of stimulus checks to Americans, some people wonder whether this will be the last stimulus check. About 90 million Americans had already received their payments of $1,400 per person and $2,800 per couple filing jointly as of March 17.

Although the second and third COVID-19 relief packages passed in relatively quick succession , a fourth economic stimulus package would likely face a tougher battle. The American Rescue Plan passed due to the budget reconciliation process with no Republican support.

What To Do If Your Stimulus Check Was Missing Money

Right â there’s also the matter of the $500-per-dependent payment that gets added to the standard $1,200 checks.

If you’re a Social Security, Railroad Retirement or Department of Veteran Affairs benefit recipient who normally doesn’t file a return and already got a stimulus check, you’re subject to the Nov. 21 deadline to register for your spouse or child. You may want to use the Non-Filers Tool to update your data so you can get the extra stimulus money. Your payment should be issued within two weeks.

However, if you previously used the tool to tell the IRS about your spouse or child, you probably don’t need to do anything â the IRS says it’s “automatically issuing the qualifying child payments.”

How Will You Receive The Third Stimulus Check

Most people got their previous stimulus checks by direct deposit with the bank account on file with the IRS. Payments were automatic for anyone who filed a 2019 tax return and/or was receiving Social Security benefits. If you didnt have direct deposit with the IRS, your payment would take a little more time and come as a check or debit card in the mail.13

The IRS has stated that these supplemental funds are “for people who earlier in March received payments based on their 2019 tax returns but are eligible for a new or larger payment based on their recently processed 2020 tax returns.”

For example, “these plus-up payments could include a situation where a persons income dropped in 2020 compared to 2019, or a person had a new child or dependent on their 2020 tax return, and other situations.”

Are Adult Dependents Getting Third Stimulus Checks

Third Stimulus Checks: When and How Will You Get $1,400?

The new stimulus plan expands eligibility to adult dependents, including college students, elderly relatives and disabled adults.

The text of the plan redefines the term dependent according to section 152 of the tax code, which includes both qualifying children and adults: Section 152 provides that the term dependent means a qualifying child ) or a qualifying relative ).

While the plan pays out $1,400 for each qualifying dependent, families should keep in mind that the targeted lower income ranges exclude them if they earn over $160,000.

For reference, the second stimulus checks provided additional $600 payments for qualifying dependents under the age of 17. So a couple filing jointly with three eligible children could get a maximum second payment of $3,000 .

Under the first and second rounds of stimulus checks, children and adult dependents over the age limit could not get an additional payment, and they did not qualify for a stimulus check of their own either.

With the new stimulus plan, however, both joint filers and heads of household get an additional $1,400 payment for each dependent, regardless of age. The table below breaks down the third stimulus checks for heads of household with one dependent:

How Much Are The Payments Worth

The third economic impact payment is worth up to $1,400 per individual and dependent.

Single filers earning an adjusted gross income up to $75,000 and heads of household earning up to $112,500 will receive $1,400, and married couples earning up to $150,000 are eligible for $2,800. Those taxpayers will also receive $1,400 for each dependent.

After that, there is a steep income phase out: The payments decrease to zero for single filers at $80,000, for heads of household at $120,000 and for married couples at $160,000 AGI. Taxpayers will receive the same amount for each dependent.

The phase out rate is not uniform for the third round of direct payments, according to the Tax Foundation. It will depend on a taxpayer’s filing status and the number of dependents.

Single filers, for example, will experience a 28% phase out rate, meaning that they will receive $280 less for every $1,000 over $75,000 they earn, says Garrett Watson, a senior policy analyst at the Tax Foundation. An individual with an AGI of $77,000 would receive $840.

At the same time, while a married couple with no dependents would also see a 28% phase out rate, a couple with one dependent would see a 42% phase out rate. A couple with one dependent and an AGI of $155,000 would receive $2,100 total.

Projected Timeline For Sending Third Stimulus Checks

The IRS delivered virtually all of the second round of stimulus checks in less than a month, starting Dec. 29, 2020, two days after then-President Donald Trump signed the $900 billion bill into law.

Congress gave the IRS until Jan. 15, 2021, to issue the bulk of the 147 million payments so that the agency could quickly pivot to preparing for tax-filing season. After that, taxpayers were instructed to claim any missing stimulus money from the first or second rounds on their 2020 tax returns in the form of a tax credit.

The third round of payments hit at the height of the 2020 tax-filing season, and it was difficult for the IRS to ship all of the stimulus checks in less than a month and process millions of returns at the same time. To give itself some breathing room, the IRS moved the deadline for filing and paying federal income taxes to May 17.

The third stimulus payments are being rolled out in tranches, or groups, by direct deposit and through the mail as a check or debit card. The vast majority of all economic impact payments will be issued by direct deposit, the IRS says, and it will continue to send batches of EIPs every week.

The IRS, via the Treasury, sent the first tranche of payments on March 12, a total of 90 million payments worth about $242 billion. Most of these payments went to people who had filed 2019 or 2020 federal income taxes, or who had used the online IRS Non-Filers Tool.

Why haven’t we received our stimulus check from last September? | Why Guy

President Trump on Sunday signed a $2.3 trillion COVID-19 relief and government funding bill that includes $600 stimulus checks for most Americans, after refusing to accept the deal for days.

The nearly 5,600-page bill passed the House and Senate by overwhelming margins Monday night, just hours after its text was released.

Trump signed it several days after saying the legislation was a disgrace and calling on Congress to up the relief payments to $2,000 and scale back spending.

In a statement Sunday night, the president said he would ask for millions of dollars in spending to be removed from the bill.

I will sign the Omnibus and Covid package with a strong message that makes clear to Congress that wasteful items need to be removed, Trump said.

While the president insisted he would send Congress a redlined version with items to be removed under the rescission process, those are merely suggestions to Congress. The bill, as signed, would not necessarily be changed.

The bill authorizes direct checks of $600 for people earning up to $75,000 per year. The amount decreases for higher earners, and people who make over $95,000 get nothing.

Theres an additional $600-per-child stimulus payment.

In his statement, Trump said Congress on Monday would vote on a separate bill to increase payments to individuals from $600 to $2,000.

Therefore, a family of four would receive $5,200, the president said about the increase, which would require Republican approval.
