If you are missing a stimulus payment or got less than the full amount, you may be able to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 or 2021 federal tax return, depending on which payment you are missing.

Missing first and second payments may only be claimed on a 2020 tax return.

Missing third payments may only be claimed on a 2021 tax return.

How Much Money Will I Get

  • Adults whose adjusted gross income is less than $75,000/year will get $1,400 for each adult, plus $1,400 for each dependent no matter how old they are. This applies to heads of households who make less than $112,500, as well.
  • The IRS will use income information from your 2020 tax return if they received that return before sending your money. Otherwise they will use information from your 2019 tax return.
  • If the IRS sends your payment based on a 2019 return and then your 2020 return says you qualify for more , they will send an additional payment to make up for the difference. To get the additional payment, you must file the 2020 tax return by 90 days from the filing deadline or September 1, 2021, whichever is earlier.

Are Adult Dependents Getting Third Stimulus Checks

The new stimulus plan expands eligibility to adult dependents, including college students, elderly relatives and disabled adults.

The text of the plan redefines the term dependent according to section 152 of the tax code, which includes both qualifying children and adults: Section 152 provides that the term dependent means a qualifying child ) or a qualifying relative ).

While the plan pays out $1,400 for each qualifying dependent, families should keep in mind that the targeted lower income ranges exclude them if they earn over $160,000.

For reference, the second stimulus checks provided additional $600 payments for qualifying dependents under the age of 17. So a couple filing jointly with three eligible children could get a maximum second payment of $3,000 .

Under the first and second rounds of stimulus checks, children and adult dependents over the age limit could not get an additional payment, and they did not qualify for a stimulus check of their own either.

A plus-up supplemental payment is a new or larger payment you may be eligible to get if you recently submitted your 2020 tax return and your income or number of dependents changed.

For example, if you received a partial third stimulus payment based on your 2019 income, but your income declined in 2020, you may receive another payment to make up the difference between the two amounts. Your original third stimulus payment and your plus-up payment together will equal the amount youre eligible to receive based on your 2020 tax return.

NEW $1,400 stimulus checks are set to be sent out in February in an “urgent” push for Covid aid, Pelosi has said.

The House Speaker released a statement on Friday morning, just hours after the Senate reached an agreement for a new Covid relief bill.

“Next week, we will be writing the legislation to create a path to final passage for the Biden American Rescue Plan, so that we can finish our work before the end of February,”Pelosi said.

Pelosi described the budget as “a statement of our values” and insisted that the resolution is a “giant step to save lives and livelihoods.”

In the early hours of Friday, a new $1.9trillion Covid budget plan with $1,400 stimulus checks was passed.

At the end of about 15 hours of debate and back-to-back votes on dozens of amendments, the Senate found itself in a 50-50 partisan deadlock over passage of the budget plan.

That deadlock was broken by Vice President Kamala Harris, whose “yes” vote provided the win for Democrats.

This was a “giant first step” toward passing the kind of comprehensive coronavirus aid bill that Biden has put at the top of his legislative agenda, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said.

Shortly before the final vote, Democrats flexed their muscle by offering an amendment reversing three earlier votes that Republicans won.

Also overturned was a Republican amendment barring coronavirus aid to immigrants living in the United States illegally.

    Payments might have stopped going out for most Americans, but some never received theirs in the first place. If you havent gotten any stimulus checks yet, there are a couple of reasons why. Since everyone doesnt always qualify for the relief payments, that would be the number one reason you havent gotten any payments yet. You simply dont qualify. However, there are other reasons why you havent gotten a payment yet, even when you should have.
