How To Claim Stimulus Funds In Your 2021 Tax Return

Missing stimulus payment? Here’s how to claim that money

The third round of stimulus payments is worth up to $1,400 per person if your adjusted gross income is $75,000 or less as a single filer, or $160,000 or less as a joint filer. Families are entitled to $1,400 per dependent for dependents of any age.

Before claiming the funds, make sure they weren’t sent to you already. You can confirm the amount of the third payment and whether it was sent to you by logging into your IRS online account or the Get My Payment app. You can also refer to a letter sent to you by the IRS, known as Notice 1444-C, which will tell you how much is owed to you.

If you lost your stimulus check or suspect it was stolen, you can request the IRS to trace your payment and get the amount automatically reimbursed to you as a tax refund. If you’re filing your 2021 tax return before your trace is complete, do not include the payment amount on the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet, the IRS says.

Otherwise, you’ll need to complete the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit worksheet and submit it as part of your 2021 tax return. The worksheet will help you calculate how much you can claim. Then, claim it on line 30 in Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR of your 2021 tax return.

Tax software will also guide you through this process and automatically add all the information to your tax return.

And remember, you can file your tax return for free if your income is $73,000 or less, using the IRS Free File Program.

Who Is Eligible For The Recovery Rebate Credit

According to the IRS, most people who were eligible for the third round of payments have already received their stimulus checks but there are a few situations why someone might not have received it or received the wrong amount. For example:

  • Youre claiming a new dependent in 2021 .

  • Your marital status changed in 2021.

  • Your adjusted gross income from 2019 or 2020 was high enough to make you ineligible for a stimulus check, but your 2021 AGI is now lower and within the qualifying threshold.

  • You did not have a Social Security number but received one by the 2021 tax deadline.

If you’re preparing your own return, use the amount shown in Letter 6475 in the Recovery Rebate Worksheet to determine if any credit applies. Then enter that credit on Line 30 of IRS Form 40.

The Recovery Rebate Worksheet is included in the instructions for IRS Form 1040 and calculated automatically by tax preparation software.

“Having the wrong amount on your return could trigger a manual review,” according to the H& R Block website, which could delay a refund for weeks.

Some states like California, and Massachusetts are still sending those payments. But several other states will send rebates or have already sent them.

How The Treasury Offset Program Works

Here’s how the Treasury Offset Program works:

  • The TOP will check if your name and taxpayer information are in its delinquent debtor database.
  • If there is a match, TOP will notify you that it is deducting the amount you owe from your tax refund.
  • TOP will send the outstanding amount to the government agency to which you owed the money.
  • If you owe more money than the payment you were going to receive, then TOP will send the entire amount to the other government agency. If you owe less, TOP will send the agency the amount you owed, and then send you the remaining balance.

Here’s an example: you were going to receive a $1,500 federal tax refund. But you are delinquent on a student loan and have $1,000 outstanding. TOP will deduct $1,000 from your tax refund and send it to the correct government agency. It will also send you a notice of its action, along with the remaining $500 that was due to you as a tax refund.

    How To Claim Your Money

The easiest way for a taxpayer to get a stimulus payment, or additional payment, if they are, in fact, due more, is to apply on their 2020 tax return, explained Mark Steber, chief tax officer for Jackson Hewitt Tax Services.

“There will be a schedule and line on the tax return to reconcile what they have received so far, and the amount actually due to them based on their 2020 tax return,” continued Steber.

The IRS says that eligible individuals can claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2020 Form 1040 or 1040-SR. These forms can also be used by people who are not normally required to file tax returns but are eligible for the credit.

If you are, indeed, due more money, it will show up on the 2020 tax return as an additional refund. Conversely, however, if you received too much cash via a stimulus payment, you do not have to pay it back.

And for those concerned about how this might complicate the filing process this year, Greene-Lewis tells filers not to worry.

“TurboTax has guidance related to stimulus payments and other impacts of Covid-19,” explained Greene-Lewis. “It will ask up front if the filer received a stimulus payment and then calculate the recovery rebate credit based on actual 2020 income.”

However, the Internal Revenue Service has provided information on how you might be eligible to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit for any missing or incorrect payments on 2020 or 2021 federal tax returns.

The first and second EIPs were issued in 2020 and early 2021, and were sent as advance installments of the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit that could have been claimed on a 2020 tax return, per the IRS.

The third EIP and any eligible plus-up payments were advance payments of the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit a taxpayer could claim via their 2021 tax return. These stimulus checks would have been received between March and December of 2021.

A taxpayer wanting to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit will need to file either a 2020 or 2021 tax return, depending on whether they missed the first, second or third stimulus check. As the IRS explains, missing or incorrect first or second stimulus checks can only be claimed on a 2020 tax return. For unaccounted third Economic Impact Payments, they can only be claimed by filing a 2021 return.

Letter 6475 is a statement of confirmation for third EIPs and any plus-up payments you received for the 2021 tax year. It will be sent to your address on file by the end of March 2023.

Use The Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet To Calculate How Much You Are Due

by John Waggoner, AARP, January 13, 2021

En español | The Internal Revenue Service issued about 160 million stimulus checks to eligible Americans for the first round of economic impact payments that began in April. Millions more payments, dubbed EIP 2, started going out in late December for the second round of stimulus. Nevertheless, some people never got their first-round stimulus checks, while others didn’t receive the full amount to which they were entitled. The same will be true for the second round of stimulus payments.

If you didn’t receive money from the first or second round of stimulus payments or you didn’t get the full amount you should have don’t give up. You’ll need to file the standard 1040 federal tax return form, or the 1040-SR tax return for people 65 or older, to get your missing stimulus money in the form of a tax credit that will either lower the amount of tax you owe or increase the size of your refund.
