The Internal Revenue Service continues to work to get the second COVID-19 pandemic relief payment to those who have not yet received it, but the agency is saying that if you have not seen the $600 direct payment by now, you may have to file for the payment on your tax return.
The second stimulus payment provides up to $600 for individuals and $1,200 for couples filing jointly, plus $600 per qualifying child. Payments were sent in three ways by direct deposit automatically sent to bank accounts, via a mailed check or a mailed prepaid debit card.
A number of people who used a tax preparation service reported that they had their stimulus payment sent not to their bank accounts, but to bank accounts with numbers they did not recognize.
The unfamiliar account numbers were temporary bank accounts used by tax preparation companies to route refund loans or other banking products to customers.
The IRS issued a statement last month assuring those waiting on the checks that the payments will be redirected to the correct account number, and that the fact that they are seeing an account number that is unfamiliar is not a sign of fraud.
The IRS and tax industry partners are taking immediate steps to redirect stimulus payments to the correct account for those affected, the IRS website read.
You do not need to complete Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit, according to the IRS statement.

For eligible people in this group who didnt receive a payment for any reason, they can file a 2020 tax return.

If you have an adjusted gross income of up to $75,000 , you could be eligible for the full amount of the recovery rebate $600 for eligible individuals, $1,200 for joint taxpayers, and an additional $600 for each dependent child under 17.
*Note, adjusted gross income is your gross income like wages, salaries, or interest minus adjustments for eligible deductions like student loan interest or your IRA deduction. Your AGI can be found on line 8b of your 2019 Form 1040.
The same eligibility rules apply to the second stimulus payment as the first one. You must have a valid Social Security number, and you cant have been claimed as a dependent on someone elses 2019 tax return.
Why You May Not Have Gotten All Your Stimmy Money
The third-round stimulus payments, authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 and signed into law on March 11, 2021, were sent from March through December last year. Round 3 of the so-called stimmies provided a maximum credit of $1,400 per person, including all qualifying dependents claimed on a tax return.
A married couple with two qualifying dependents, for example, are eligible to receive a maximum credit of $5,600, depending on income limits. And if you brought a baby into the world last year, youll be able to file for up to $1,400 that youre owed for your new family member if you claim the child as a dependent.
The size of the credit, however, gets reduced for single filers with adjusted gross income of more than $75,000 and for married couples filing jointly with earnings of more than $150,000. For heads of household, the credit is reduced between $120,000 and $112,500.
The credit disappears entirely for individuals with AGI above $80,000 and for married couples filing jointly who earn more than $160,000. Heads of household with incomes of more than $120,000 also dont get the stimulus check. Most eligible Americans have already received the payments, according to the IRS.

WASHINGTON Today, the Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department will begin delivering a second round of Economic Impact Payments as part of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 to millions of Americans who received the first round of payments earlier this year.
The initial direct deposit payments may begin arriving as early as tonight for some and will continue into next week. Paper checks will begin to be mailed tomorrow, Wednesday, December 30.
The IRS emphasizes that there is no action required by eligible individuals to receive this second payment. Some Americans may see the direct deposit payments as pending or as provisional payments in their accounts before the official payment date of January 4, 2021. The IRS reminds taxpayers that the payments are automatic, and they should not contact their financial institutions or the IRS with payment timing questions.
As with the first round of payments under the CARES Act, most recipients will receive these payments by direct deposit. For Social Security and other beneficiaries who received the first round of payments via Direct Express, they will receive this second payment the same way.
When You’ll Receive Your Payment
The final date to qualify has already passed for filers other than those with pending ITINs. If you have already filed, you don’t have to do anything.
If you have not received a payment by now, you will most likely receive a paper check. In addition, if you did not receive a refund with your tax return or owed money at the time of filing, you will receive a paper check.
Payments will go out based on the last 3 digits of the ZIP code on your 2020 tax return. Some payments may need extra time to process for accuracy and completeness. If your tax return is processed during or after the date of your scheduled ZIP code payment, allow up to 60 days after your return has processed. Please allow up to three weeks to receive the paper checks once they are mailed out.

Who Will Get The 600 Dollar Checks In Oregon This Week
According to the state government, Oregon will deposit around 82m dollars directly into bank accounts, while the remaining 60m dollars will be sent via mail to qualifying residents.
Oregon’s plan is to send out all the money by July 1, while Oregon Department of Revenue spokesman Rich Hoover made clear that the payments are not subject to state or federal income tax.
To be eligible, Oregon residents should have lived within the state in the last six months of 2020 and claimed Earned Income Tax Credit in that same year.
“For most Oregon households who qualify, you don’t need to do anything to receive the one-time payment,” the Department of Revenue said in a statement.
“The payment will be made by direct deposit or check in the mail. Typically, you will receive this payment using the refund option you selected on your tax return.
“If you received an advanced refund through your tax service provider, or paid your tax preparation fees using your refund, you’ll receive your payment by check in the mail.
“All direct deposits will be made and checks will be mailed by July 1, 2022.”
How To Claim A Missing Payment
You may be eligible to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 or 2021 federal tax return if you didn’t get an Economic Impact Payment or got less than the full amount.
It is important to understand that the Economic Impact Payments applied to different tax years. Depending on whether you missed the first, second or third payment, you will need to file either a 2020 or 2021 tax return to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit.

Are More People Eligible Now For A Payment Than Before
Under the earlier CARES Act, joint returns of couples where only one member of the couple had a Social Security number were generally ineligible for a payment unless they were a member of the military. But this months new law changes and expands that provision, and more people are now eligible. In this situation, these families will now be eligible to receive payments for the taxpayers and qualifying children of the family who have work-eligible SSNs. People in this group who dont receive an Economic Impact Payment can claim this when they file their 2020 taxes under the Recovery Rebate Credit.
More Money Could Be Approved By Congress Soon
Though there’s plenty we still don’t know and much up for debate, there could be additional cash in the pockets of Americans in the following scenarios:
If the child tax credit raise is made permanent. Money from the expanded child tax credit started this summer with monthly payments to millions of lower- and middle-income families with children. In a speech this summer, Biden called on Congress to extend the expanded child tax credit through 2025. Some lawmakers and economists are now pushing for the enhanced credit, and House Democrats put forward a proposal to make it permanent, though it is still controversial.
If there’s a minimum wage hike. Some senators continue to look for ways to boost the federal minimum wage, which stands at $7.25 per hour. A few proponents want to set the bar at a $15 hourly wage, and others are looking to only go up to $11 an hour. In recent years, many states, localities and businesses have implemented minimum wage increases above the federal level. However, the discussion of a new national rate of $15 an hour has hit a roadblock in recent months, and the likelihood of it being enacted anytime soon is low.

When Can Americans Expect To See The Checks
People will begin to see the money roll in pretty quickly, according to a press release from the Internal Revenue Service and Treasury Department.
The first direct deposits could arrive as early as Tuesday night, and they will continue into next week. Paper checks will start to be mailed on Wednesday, the Treasury Department said.
The official payment date is Jan. 4, though.
It took approximately two weeks for direct deposits to roll out to Americans during the first round of stimulus through the CARES Act in March, though the wait was much longer for those who didn’t file taxes last year or opted for another option to receive the relief.
Last Monday — before the president threw a wrench in the process by delaying his signature — Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said that Americans who qualify should expect to see money in their accounts as early as this week and pledged a speedy process.
What Gaos Work Shows
1. IRS can use data to tailor outreach efforts.
It was challenging for IRS and Treasury to get payments to some peopleespecially nonfilers, or those who are not required to file tax returns. These people were eligible for the payments for a couple of reasons:
- first, there was no earned income requirement, so Americans with no or very little income could receive economic relief and
- second, the payments were refundable tax credits, so eligible individuals can claim the full amount even if it exceeds what they owe in taxes.
In 2020, Treasury and IRS used other data to identify and reach out to around 9 million potentially eligible nonfilers. In May 2021, TIGTA identified potentially 10 million individuals eligible for payments, but IRS has no further plans to reach out to these individuals.
We recommended that Treasury and IRS use available data to develop an updated estimate of total eligible individuals which they could use to better tailor and redirect their ongoing outreach and communications efforts for similar tax credits.
2. Improved collaboration will also help outreach to underserved communities.
We recommended that Treasury and IRS focus on improving interagency collaboration and use data to assess the effectiveness of their efforts to educate more people about refundable tax credits and eligibility requirements.
Check The Status Of Your Stimulus Payment
The IRS relaunched its Get My Payment tool.
The tool allows you to confirm if the IRS sent your stimulus payment.
According to the IRS, some people received their first stimulus payment in partial payments. If you received partial payments the application will only show the most recent.
It will also identify the form of payment you should expect to receive. The data is updated once per day overnight.
What If My Bank Account Information Changed How Will I Get My Second Stimulus Check
Unfortunately, if your second stimulus check is sent to an account that is closed or no longer active, the IRS will not reissue the payment to you by mail. Instead, if you are eligible to get a payment, you can claim the stimulus check on your 2020 tax return as the Recovery Rebate Credit or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.

But if you haven’t received your stimulus cash at this point, you’ll most likely need to take action to get it. The IRS recently announced that it’s finished sending $600 stimulus payments to all of the eligible recipients it has on record.
