Where Is My Stimulus Refund

What If I Am Married To Someone Who Owes Child Support Will My Tax Return Be Applied To The Child Support Arrears They May Owe

Where is my tax refund or stimulus check?
  • Yes,unless you are eligible for relief. If youdo not owe child support butyouare married tosomeonewhoowes child support, you may need to file an Injured Spouse Claim and Allocation -Form 8379

  • In some instances, the IRS offsets a portion of the payment sent to a spouse who filed an injured spouse claim if it has been offset by the non-injured spouses past-due child support. The FAQ on the IRS stimulus FAQ www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payment-information-center website states: The IRS is aware that in some instances a portion of the payment sent to a spouse who filed an injured spouse claim with his or her 2019 tax return has been offset by the non-injured spouses past-due child support. The IRS is working with the Bureau of the Fiscal Service and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Child Support Enforcement, to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. If you filed an injured spouse claim with your return and are impacted by this issue, you do not need to take any action. The injured spouse will receive their unpaid half of the total payment when the issue is resolved.

What If You Make A Mistake

It’s not the end of the world if you mess up while trying to figure out how much stimulus money the government owes you.

Although the IRS said it won’t proactively figure out how much people are owed, it will fix Line 30 errors.

In that case, “the IRS will calculate the correct amount of the Recovery Rebate Credit, make the correction to your tax return and continue processing your return,” according to its website. If this happens, you’ll know because the IRS will send you a notice. This may delay your tax return processing a little.

When To File Taxes To Maximize Your Third Stimulus Check

Most of the above advice deals with the first and second stimulus checks. But a third may be on the horizon and the payment may drop just as most of the country is filing its 2020 taxes.

Lawmakers are still deliberating, but it looks like the third stimulus check, if passed, will be based on people’s 2019 or 2020 tax data. The IRS will probably use whichever return was filed most recently.

This tees up a timing issue for people who fall near the income thresholds. The broad strokes are this: If your income dropped between 2019 and 2020, you’ll want to file early so as to maximize the amount of EIP money you’re eligible for. But if your income increased last year, you may want to delay until closer to the deadline on the chance that Congress approves a third stimulus check before April 15.

‘payment Status Not Available’: Why

Why That First $1,200 Stimulus Check Might Be the Last You See For ...

The IRS says that millions of taxpayers have successfully used the new Get My Payment app to track their stimulus checks and, if needed, add their direct deposit information to get payment faster. So why are countless people complaining on social media that they entered their information at the app only to receive a frustrating “Payment Status Not Available” message?

In some cases, there could be glitches with the Get My Payment app itself that are preventing people from adding direct deposit information or finding out the expected date for their payments to arrive. Among other quirks, the system may give you a “Payment Status Not Available Message” if you owed $0 in taxes and received no refund on your most recent tax return, the Washington Post reported, because the IRS form gave an error message for people entering “0” in those corresponding spots.

The Get My Payment app went offline during certain late-night hours on Thursday, April 23, through Saturday, April 25, for “planned maintenance.” On April 26, the IRS announced “significant enhancements” to the app, though the agency did not specify which glitches had been fixed. “We urge people who havent received a payment date yet to visit Get My Payment again for the latest information,” IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a statement. “IRS teams worked long hours to deliver Get My Payment in record time, and we will continue to make improvements to help Americans.”

What If Your 2020 Taxes Make It So The Stimulus Checks You Already Got Were Too Big

EIP 1 and EIP 2 were based on the adjusted gross income reported on your 2018 and 2019 tax returns. As mentioned above, they had income limits over which stimulus checks decreased and eventually phased out.

If your income from 2018/2019 changed in 2020 and based on that income level, you don’t qualify for the aid you already got don’t worry. The IRS has said it’s not clawing back excess funds from people whose stimulus checks were too big. It’s more concerned with taxpayers whose stimulus checks were too small.

“If you got paid too much money, you do not have to pay that back,” Pickering says. “That’s something that should make people feel really relieved.”

Here Are Some Key Things To Know About This Tool And Who Can Use It

    • Before using the tool, people must verify their identity by answering security questions.
    • If the answers do not match IRS records after multiple attempts, the user will be locked out of the tool for 24 hours. This is for security reasons. Those who can’t verify their identity won’t be able to use Get My Payment. If this happens, people should not contact the IRS.
    • If the tool returns a message of “payment status not available,” this may mean the IRS can’t determine the person’s eligibility for a payment right now. There are several reasons this could happen. Two common reasons are:
    • A 2018 or 2019 tax return is not on file and the agency needs more information or,
    • The individual could be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return.
  • In some cases, if a taxpayer has filed their 2019 tax return but the IRS hasn’t processed it yet, they may receive “payment status not available.” Taxpayers who’ve already filed a tax return don’t need to take any action. The IRS continues to issue Economic Impact Payments as tax returns are processed.
  • People who aren’t required to file a tax return and used the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool to register for a payment can check the status of their payment using the Get My Payment tool. These individuals should wait two weeks after submitting their information. If they’re required to file a 2019 tax return and they used the Non-Filer tool, this may delay processing their tax return and their Economic Impact Payment.

How The Treasury Offset Program Works

Here’s how the Treasury Offset Program works:

  • The TOP will check if your name and taxpayer information are in its delinquent debtor database.
  • If there is a match, TOP will notify you that it is deducting the amount you owe from your tax refund.
  • TOP will send the outstanding amount to the government agency to which you owed the money.
  • If you owe more money than the payment you were going to receive, then TOP will send the entire amount to the other government agency. If you owe less, TOP will send the agency the amount you owed, and then send you the remaining balance.

Here’s an example: you were going to receive a $1,500 federal tax refund. But you are delinquent on a student loan and have $1,000 outstanding. TOP will deduct $1,000 from your tax refund and send it to the correct government agency. It will also send you a notice of its action, along with the remaining $500 that was due to you as a tax refund.

The Internal Revenue Service can help you understand more about tax refund offsets.
