Get My Payment Irs Tool Active As First Stimulus Checks Go Out
People can now check on the IRS website to see when they are expected to receive economic relief payments from the COVID-19 bill signed into law last week.
The Get My Payment tool went active over the weekend, and the first of the stimulus checks have started to be disbursed via direct deposit to Americans. The IRS webpage also has links to frequently asked questions and information on the first and second relief payments that were approved in 2020.
The American Rescue Plan that President Joe Biden signed Thursday included $1,400 stimulus checks to individuals making $75,000 or less and $2,800 to couple filing jointly who make $150,000 or less. Heads of household making up to $112,500 qualify for the full amount.
People must have a Social Security number to be eligible.
Those making less than $80,000 single/$120,000 head of household/$160,000 couples are eligible for smaller payments, with others making above those amounts not qualifying.
Payments were increased for parents and guardians in the most recent relief, to up to $1,400 per qualifying dependent, based on the income of the taxpayer claiming them.
Also, dependents older than 17 who were left out of the first rounds of payments are now eligible, including college students and elderly and disabled adults. Those payments will go to the taxpayer claiming them.
A family of four qualifying for the full amount will receive $5,600.
Getting A Missing Check Can Be Difficult But Worth The Trouble

Nobody wants to leave money on the table, especially a stimulus payment from the U.S. government that theyre eligible for but didnt receive. In late January the Internal Revenue Service announced that all third-round stimulus checks had been sent. But the IRS also noted that not all eligible Americans received the full amount theyre entitled to.
The good news? Theres still time to get whats owed to you.
Uncle Sam which issued 175 million third-round payments, totaling over $400 billion, through the end of 2021 reminded people that they can claim any remaining stimulus money theyre entitled to but didnt get by claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 income tax return.
The rebate, which comes as a tax credit of up to $1,400 per eligible person on your 2021 return, will either lower the amount of tax you owe or boost the size of your refund. The golden prize of a tax return is a tax credit, says Mark Steber, chief tax information officer at Jackson Hewitt, a tax preparation service. The Recovery Rebate Credit is a dollar-for-dollar tax-liability offset.

What Ssi Ssdi And Veteran Beneficiaries Need To Know
The IRS began sending out stimulus checks for Social Security beneficiaries, including those who are part of the SSI and SSDI programs, on April 7. It began sending payments to people who receive veteran benefits and don’t typically file taxes on April 14. If you’re part of one of these groups and haven’t gotten your check yet, it may be on the way soon.
The Social Security Administration has also advised people not to contact the SSA about problems. It’s possible you may need to use one of the strategies above, depending on what the trouble is.

How Do I Check On The Status Of My Payment
Youll need to enter your Social Security number, date of birth and mailing address in order to track your payment, the Treasury Department said.
Some people who used the tool on Wednesday received a message that their payment status was not available. The Treasury Department suggested checking again because it only updates the tool once daily, usually overnight.

Will I Get An Economic Impact Payment
If you meet the following four requirements, you likely qualify for the stimulus.
1. Income Limits: If you are filing as single with an adjusted gross income up to $75,000, married filing jointly with an AGI up to $150,000, or head of household with an AGI up to $112,500, you will receive the full payment. Above these income limits, the payment amount decreases 5 percent for every additional $100 of income up to $99,000 for a single adult, $136,500 for head of household, and $198,000 for a married couple.
If you have zero income you can still get the payment.
2. Age requirements: There is no age requirement for the stimulus check, however you cannot be someone elses dependent. Children must be under 17 to get the additional payment for them.
3. Taxpayer Identification Number :At least one tax filer must have a valid Social Security number . If you are married filing jointly, and one spouse has an SSN and one has an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number , the spouse with an SSN and any children with SSNs or an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number can get the payment. If one spouse is an active member of the military, then both spouses are eligible for a stimulus check even if only one spouse has an SSN and the other spouse has an ITIN.
4. Citizenship or Residency: You must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or qualifying resident alien.

How Can I Get My Stimulus Payment Faster
The quickest way to get your payment is through direct deposit. Beware of scams! The IRS will not contact you by phone, email, text message, or social media to request personal information especially banking details or ask you to provide a processing fee. They will send written correspondence with instructions on steps to take and the timeframe for action. Remember, you do not need to pay to get this money.
Additionally, the IRS refers to this money as an Economic Impact Payment. Communications that use stimulus check or recovery rebate are unlikely to be from the IRS. Hang up on phone calls you receive and delete email or text messages that seem too good to be true. You can report scams to the Better Business Bureau to helps protect others.
Social Security Benefits: Payment Dates
The January check next year will be based on recipients’ birth dates, according to the Social Security Administration.
- People who claimed Social Security before May 1997 or who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income will receive their Social Security payment on January 3.
- People who receive SSI will get their first 2023 payment on December 30 of this year. That is because these benefits are usually paid on the 1st of each month, but due to January 1 being a holiday and December 31 falling on a Saturday, the Social Security Administration said it will issue these checks two days earlier than usual.
- For people whose birthday falls between the 1st to 10th of any month, their Social Security payments arrive on the second Wednesday of the month. That means the first check with the 2023 COLA will land on January 11.
- Those with birthdays that fall between the 11th to 20th of any month will have their payments deposited or mailed on the third Wednesday of each month. Their first check with the enhanced COLA will arrive on January 18.
- If a recipient’s birthday falls between the 21st and 31st, their payments are scheduled for the fourth Wednesday of each month. Their first 2023 COLA will arrive on January 25.

Eligible taxpayers who filed a tax return in 2019 or 2018 and chose to receive their refund through direct deposit into their checking or savings account will automatically have their stimulus payment deposited into that account.
To find out when your stimulus check is coming, visit the IRS Get My Payment tool.
If the Get My Payment site says, Payment status not available its for one of the following reasons:
- The IRS hasnt finished processing your 2019 return, Stimulus Registration, or IRS Non-Filers entry.
- Get My Payment doesnt have your data yet.
- If you receive Social Security, VA benefits, SSA or RRB Form 1099 and dont typically file a return, your information isnt available in Get My Payment yet.
- Youre not eligible for a payment.
Get My Payment information is only updated once per day, so if you receive a Payment status not available message check back the following day to see if your status has changed.
You Aren’t Eligible For A Stimulus Payment
If you aren’t eligible for a stimulus check , the Get My Payment app won’t necessarily explain that. Instead, you may simply find yourself staring at the words “Payment Status Not Available.” If this is the case, you may want to take a look at your adjusted gross income on your most recent tax return, to see if you’re eligible for a payment or not.

What If I Filed My Taxes Last Year Under My Previous Name And Have Changed My Name Since I Filed Those Taxes
If you file taxes and have not filed your 2019 taxes, you should file as soon as possible with your new name. Make sure your name is updated with the Social Security Administration.
If your stimulus check is written out to you under your previous legal name, you should still be able to deposit your check. However, you may need to speak with your bank and show your legal paperwork documenting your courtordered name change and old and new ID.
If you are cashing a check outside of a bank, bring your legal documents with you and try to call in advance to make sure that they dont have additional requirements to cash the check.
Impact Of Taxes Medicare Premiums
While the COLA increase will be a welcome boost for Social Security’s roughly 70 million recipients, there are some implications to be aware of, Johnson noted.
The benefits hike could result in higher taxes for some recipients, for instance. Single taxpayers who receive more than $25,000 in retirement income need to pay taxes, while the threshold kicks in at $32,000 for married couples, according to the Social Security Administration.
The average Social Security benefit for 2023 will be below that amount, almost reaching $22,000 per single recipient next year. However, many seniors also have other sources of retirement income that could push them above the taxation threshold, especially after accounting for the 8.7% boost from their monthly benefit checks.
Of course, taxes are dependent on a number of variables, including the standard deduction, which is increasing in 2023 to reflect inflation, and every person’s tax situation will vary.
Another issue that seniors should be aware of is the impact of their higher Social Security benefits on Medicare premiums, Johnson said. This is mostly an issue that will impact higher-income seniors, since Medicare premiums work on a sliding scale based on income.

What To Do If Theres A Direct Deposit Issue
The IRS tracking tool for the third stimulus check doesnt allow you to add direct deposit information this time unless the IRS cant deliver your payment. So if you have a problem, what do you do? Your check may have bounced back to the IRS if the agency tried to send your payment to a now-closed bank account or to a temporary prepaid debit card a tax preparer set up for you. If your payment was returned to the IRS, the agency will mail your check to the current address it has on file for you. If that check is returned, then the IRS will let you enter your banking information in the Get My Payment tool, the IRS said.
First, we suggest you call your bank or tax preparer it never hurts to cover all your bases to confirm that an attempt was made to deposit money into a closed account or debit card.

Projected Timeline For Sending Third Stimulus Checks
The IRS delivered virtually all of the second round of stimulus checks in less than a month, starting Dec. 29, 2020, two days after then-President Donald Trump signed the $900 billion bill into law.
Congress gave the IRS until Jan. 15, 2021, to issue the bulk of the 147 million payments so that the agency could quickly pivot to preparing for tax-filing season. After that, taxpayers were instructed to claim any missing stimulus money from the first or second rounds on their 2020 tax returns in the form of a tax credit.
The third round of payments hit at the height of the 2020 tax-filing season, and it was difficult for the IRS to ship all of the stimulus checks in less than a month and process millions of returns at the same time. To give itself some breathing room, the IRS moved the deadline for filing and paying federal income taxes to May 17.
The third stimulus payments are being rolled out in tranches, or groups, by direct deposit and through the mail as a check or debit card. The vast majority of all economic impact payments will be issued by direct deposit, the IRS says, and it will continue to send batches of EIPs every week.
The IRS, via the Treasury, sent the first tranche of payments on March 12, a total of 90 million payments worth about $242 billion. Most of these payments went to people who had filed 2019 or 2020 federal income taxes, or who had used the online IRS Non-Filers Tool.

What If I Never Got The 1st Or 2nd Stimulus Checks
If youre missing a first or second stimulus check but believe you qualify, then you can claim the money on your 2020 tax return . The payments are worth up to $1,200 and $600 per person, respectively.
When you prepare your tax return, youll be asked to report the total Economic Impact Payment received to date.
There will be a separate worksheet on your tax return with instructions for calculating any outstanding amount owed to you, if anything. If you file your taxes using online software, the provider will prompt you to enter the required information and do the calculations for you.
The IRS advises filers to only fill out this portion of their return if they received less than the maximum payment amount.
