The Irs Doesnt Have Your Direct Deposit Info

Where is my stimulus check? We are answering your top questions

The fastest way to get your stimulus check is via bank direct deposit from the IRS. If the IRS doesnt have your direct deposit info on file, you can still get paid, but itll come via paper check â and getting a check in the mail could delay your payment by weeks or even months. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin told CNN that it was his idea that paper check stimulus payments have President Donald Trumps signature on them, and that reports saying that the signature would add further delay to the arrival of paper checks is incorrect.

The checks have not gone out yet, Mnuchin said to CNNs Jake Tapper on Sunday, April 19, and the reason they have not gone out yet is that were hoping that more people, as I said, will go to IRS.gov. Its much safer to send out direct deposits.

Most taxpayers provide the IRS with their bank account details, for the purposes of making a payment or receiving a tax refund. If the agency does not have your direct deposit details, you can provide the IRS with that information at the Get My Payment appâ which also lets you track the status of your check. However, the last day to give your direct deposit info to the IRS was May 13 if you missed the deadline, are eligible, and havent received your payment already, it will come as a paper check. You can still use the Get My Payment app to reveal how you will receive your payment , and give a scheduled arrival date, if the payment has been processed.

How The Treasury Offset Program Works

Here’s how the Treasury Offset Program works:

  • The TOP will check if your name and taxpayer information are in its delinquent debtor database.
  • If there is a match, TOP will notify you that it is deducting the amount you owe from your tax refund.
  • TOP will send the outstanding amount to the government agency to which you owed the money.
  • If you owe more money than the payment you were going to receive, then TOP will send the entire amount to the other government agency. If you owe less, TOP will send the agency the amount you owed, and then send you the remaining balance.

Here’s an example: you were going to receive a $1,500 federal tax refund. But you are delinquent on a student loan and have $1,000 outstanding. TOP will deduct $1,000 from your tax refund and send it to the correct government agency. It will also send you a notice of its action, along with the remaining $500 that was due to you as a tax refund.

The Internal Revenue Service can help you understand more about tax refund offsets.

    Who Qualifies For Inflation Relief

First and foremost, youll need to be a California resident when the payments go out. Youll need to have been a California resident for at least six months in 2020.

As mentioned above, the payments are tiered by 2020 income. Single filers making more than $250,000 or couples making more than $500,000 will not receive any payments.

To qualify, you also will have needed to file your taxes in 2020 and, an additional hurdle for college students, you cannot have been claimed as a dependent during that tax year.

Heres how to confirm you qualify.

How To Claim A Missing Payment

You may be eligible to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 or 2021 federal tax return if you didn’t get an Economic Impact Payment or got less than the full amount.

It is important to understand that the Economic Impact Payments applied to different tax years. Depending on whether you missed the first, second or third payment, you will need to file either a 2020 or 2021 tax return to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit.

What Happens If You Dont Receive Your Payment Or Only Receive A Partial Amount

If you havent received your payment yet, dont panic, although its easier said than done. Compared with the first round of stimulus checks, the IRS and Treasury Department have significantly shrunk the delivery timeline by weeks, if not months. However, the text of the American Relief Plan still gives both agencies until Dec. 31, 2021, to distribute all funds, meaning the last round of checks might not hit consumers mailboxes until January 2022.

Consider signing up for the U.S. Postal Services informed delivery service, so you know in advance of any mail youll be receiving on a given day. If the IRS says it already mailed your check but you didnt receive one, down the road you might also decide to order a stimulus check payment trace. You can arrange one by calling a hotline at the IRS or submitting a completed Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund by mail or fax. But be prepared: This process can take weeks. The IRS may also ask that you sit tight for the time being in some cases, for a period as long as nine weeks.

What Does The Stimulus Check Portal Do

The updated “Get My Payment” tool lets you:

    • Check the status of your stimulus payment
    • Confirm your payment type and
    • Get a projected direct deposit or paper check delivery date .

For first-round stimulus payments, you could also use the portal to enter or change your bank account information to have your payment directly deposited into your account. However, that feature isn’t included in the current tool . The IRS already has bank account information for millions of Americans from recent tax returns, tax payments, the original “Get My Payment” tool, the non-filers tool used last year, other federal agencies that regularly send out benefit payments , and federal records of recent payments to or from the government. So, the tax agency is generally limiting direct deposit payments to bank accounts that they already have on file. As a result, you can’t change your bank information using the “Get My Payment” tool.

If your payment isn’t deposited directly into your bank account, then you’ll get either a paper check or a debit card in the mail . You could also receive a payment by mail if your bank rejected a direct deposit. This could happen because the bank information was incorrect or the bank account on file with the IRS has since been closed.

    • Returns sent by certified mail: Allow an additional 3 weeks

The Wheres my Refund application shows where in the process your refund is. When we’ve finished processing your return, the application will show you the date your refund was sent. All returns are different, and processing times will vary.

    Stimulus Checks And Direct Deposit

Your Money: Where’s my third stimulus check?

While Get My Payment allows you to give bank direct deposit information to the IRS, you cannot change bank information with the IRS if it already has an account for you on file. Why? As the IRS explains, To help protect against potential fraud, the tool also does not allow people to change bank account information already on file with the IRS. You also cant change your form of payment if the IRS has already scheduled it for delivery.

If you havent filed your 2019 taxes , you might want to do that now. Many people can file federal tax returns for free, and tax-prep services like TurboTax and H& R Block are easy to use. The deadline for filing taxes in 2020 was moved from April 15 to July 15.

The Get My Payment app was designed for people who file federal taxes. The IRS has a separate spot online where non-tax filers, including many low-income earners, can enter their information to get stimulus checks for themselves and qualifying dependents.

Who gets stimulus checks first? The Treasury Department says that the first recipients of stimulus checks officially called economic impact payments, part of the $2 trillion CARES Act to provide economic relief amid the coronavirus pandemic were taxpayers who have already filed their 2019 tax returns and have provided direct deposit information to the IRS. Many of these payments began showing up in taxpayers bank accounts on Wednesday, April 15, or even earlier.

Additional safeguards can mean that it takes us longer to process your refund. However, our goal is to stop fraudulent refunds before theyre issued, not to slow down your refund. • Problems with direct deposit. If you requested direct deposit, but the account number was entered incorrectly, your bank won’t be able to process the deposit. This process could take up to 2 weeks between the time we receive notification from the bank and when you receive the check.

What If I Owe Child Support Payments Back Taxes Money To Creditors Or Debt Collectors Or Federal Or State Debt

None of the three stimulus checks can be reduced to pay any federal or state debts and back taxes. Unlike the first stimulus check, your second and third stimulus check cannot be reduced if you owe past-due child support payments.

    Federal or State Debt
    Protected Not protected

If you are claiming the payments as part of your 2020 tax refund , the payments are no longer protected from past-due child support payments, creditor and debt collectors, and other federal or state debt that you owe . In other words, if you receive your first or second stimulus checks as part of your tax refund instead of direct checks, it may be reduced.

Can You Use The Portal If You Didn’t File A Tax Return

You couldn’t use the “Get My Payment” tool to track the status of your first stimulus check if you didn’t file a 2018 or 2019 federal income tax return. However, there was another online tool that non-filers could use to give the IRS with the information it needed to process a payment.

The non-filers tool wasn’t used for second stimulus checks, though. Instead, if you didn’t file a 2019 tax return, and you didn’t use the non-filers tool to get your first-round payment, then you have to wait to claim your second stimulus check money as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2020 return.

The IRS is not using the non-filers tool for third-round stimulus checks, either. As a result, if you don’t file a 2019 or 2020 tax return, you’ll have to claim any money you’re owed as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2021 return, which you won’t file until next year. However, you can avoid having to wait until next year by filing a 2020 return before the May 17, 2021, deadline.

You May See A Need More Information Message

    Where

According to the IRS FAQ, a Need More Information message in the Get My Payment tool means your payment was returned because the US Postal Service wasnt able to deliver it.

The FAQ says youll be able to have your payment reissued as a direct deposit by providing a bank routing and account number, a prepaid debit card or a financial service account that has a routing and account number associated with it. The FAQ says you can also update your mailing address to receive your payment.

There is, however, at least one benefit related to this thats already guaranteed for 2022.

If you add up all six child tax credit check amounts you got last year? You should have also gotten a tax credit for that same amount this year when you filed your federal taxes. That will represent the second half of your child tax credit. And, for now, that will be the end of the enhanced credit.

Theres always a chance the Senate could revisit the legislation supporting an extension of these checks. For the moment, though, that possibility seems highly unlikely.

Why Have I Not Received My 3rd Stimulus Check

If you still havent received your payment, or got less than you were eligible for, you can claim the money on your 2021 tax return by using the Recovery Rebate Credit. If youre eligible, youll need to file a 2021 tax return, even if you dont usually file a tax return, the IRS said in a statement.

I Got A Letter Saying My Stimulus Payment Would Be Offset Was It A Mistake

If you received an IRS Notice CP21C saying your stimulus payment would be held back to pay an old tax bill, you can disregard it. More than 100,000 taxpayers got this letter from the IRS in error, according to the agency. Instead, they should have received letters stating that their first Economic Income Payment couldnât be distributed, and they should use the Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet to claim their payment on their taxes.

Currently, the IRS will use the information it has on file to deliver stimulus checks, including if you registered using the IRS Enter Payment Information tool in 2020. If you are a Social Security retirement or disability income recipient who doesnt typically file a tax return, you do not need to take any action to get your stimulus payment as it will be automatically calculated based on information from your 2019 Form SSA-1099 Social Security Benefit Statement or RRB-1099 Social Security Equivalent Benefit Statement and deposited by the IRS.

If you receive Supplemental Security Income you will automatically receive your stimulus payment with no further action needed. The Treasury Department, not the Social Security Administration, will make these automatic payments to SSI recipients. You will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your SSI benefits.

Veterans and their beneficiaries who receive Compensation and Pension benefit payments from VA who dont usually file a tax return and didnt file their tax year 2018 or tax year 2019 taxes also dont need to do anything and will automatically receive their $600 stimulus check.

If none of these apply, you should be able to file a 2020 tax return and claim the Recovery Rebate Credit to get any payments you deserve during the upcoming filing season.
