  • What Else Can I Do

If the IRS Economic Payment line doesnt work for you, then you can also try to contact the IRS through the IRS Customer Service hotline at 1-800-829-1040. Similarly, you can contact the IRS to inquire about income taxes at 1-800-829-1954. However, both these numbers have automated messagesbut they dont provide information about stimulus checks. There are two other approaches you can take:

  • Wait for a stimulus check: The IRS is mailing stimulus checks on a rolling basis. Here is a schedule for when you may receive your stimulus check.
  • File 2020 taxes: If you dont receive a stimulus check or the payment information is incorrect, you could wait to file your 2020 income taxes to rectify any issues.
  • Within 15 days of after the payment of your stimulus check is made, the IRS should send you a letter with details about your stimulus check, including the amount and how you were paid. The letter also includes the same phone number for the IRS Economic Impact Payment line800-919-9835to contact the IRS with any questions regarding your stimulus check.

I Had A Problem With The First Or Second Payment

Some individuals had too much income in 2019 to qualify for the first or second stimulus payment , but their income decreased enough in 2020 for them to qualify. If you fall into this category, you can file a tax return for your 2020 taxes and you’ll receive a recovery rebate credit as part of your refund .

In other cases, families received stimulus payments by direct deposit but the IRS neglected to add money for one or more of their children. Sometimes there didn’t seem to be a reason for this . For other families, it seems the IRS did not update the number of children that taxpayers have, even for families who claimed new children on their 2019 tax returns. You’ll be able to claim the rest of the stimulus payment when you file your next tax return.

What If I Already Filed My Return And My Refund Was Adjusted

If you are filed your 2020 or 2021 tax return before starting a trace and did not include the payment amount on line 16 or 19 of the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet, you may receive a notice saying your Recovery Rebate Credit was adjusted.

After the trace has been completed and it is determined your payment has not been cashed, an adjustment will be made and a check sent to the taxpayer. You will not need to take any additional action to receive the credit.

What To Do With Your Stimulus Check Illuminate Financial

You may be eligible to claim a 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 federal tax return.

Individuals can view the total amount of their third Economic Impact Payments through their individual Online Account. Through March 2022, we’ll also send Letter 6475 to the address we have on file for you confirming the total amount of your third Economic Impact Payment and any plus-up payments you received for tax year 2021.

You will need this information from your online account or your letter to accurately calculate your 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2021 federal tax return in 2022. For married filing joint individuals, each spouse will need to log into their own online account or review their own letter for their half of the total payment. All amounts must be considered if filing jointly.

Using the total amount of the third payment from your online account or Letter 6475 when preparing a tax return can reduce errors and avoid delays in processing while the IRS corrects the tax return.

My Stimulus Payment Was Too High

Some individuals whose income increased too much in 2019 were not eligible for a full stimulus payment, but they got one anyway since the IRS based the payment on their 2018 taxes. Those individuals will not have to pay back the payment.

In other cases, families were paid an extra $500 or $600 for children who were 17 or older . This could happen if the IRS took the number of children who qualified for the child tax credit in 2018 without updating children’s ages for 2019. But in other cases, it looks like the IRS took the number of dependents from a family’s 2018 tax return, without regard to their age. The IRS has said that those who received such overpayments will not have to pay them back.

How To Request A Payment Trace

There are two ways to request a payment trace for a third stimulus check:

Pick only one method . Also remember that you can’t request a payment trace before the timeframes described above the IRS can’t process a request until after the appropriate time period has passed.

If you’re using Form 3911, make sure you:

    • Write “EIP3” on the top of the form to identify the payment you want to trace
    • Complete the form answering all refund questions as they relate to your third stimulus payment
    • When completing item 7 under Section 1, check the box for “Individual” as the type of return, enter “2021” as the tax period, and don’t write anything for the date filed and
    • Sign the form .

Mail or fax the form to the appropriate address or fax number according to the chart below. Don’t send anything other than a Form 3911 to the fax numbers listed.

    You Changed Your Bank Account

The IRS is currently issuing direct-deposit checks straight to the bank accounts of people who opted for direct-deposit of their income tax returns in 2019 or 2020.

If you closed the bank account that you received direct deposits from previously, the IRS will have to wait until the deposit is returned by the bank before issuing you a paper check, which can take some time.

This app will help you track your stimulus check

If for some reason you didn’t get a Notice 1444 informing you of the stimulus check and the number to call, our recommendation would be to try calling 800-919-9835. As far as we know, that’s the number for everyone.

If you can’t get through on the stimulus check number, you could also try phoning the general customer service hotline , but so far we’ve not heard that people are ending up on the dedicated stimulus check service through that and the service is extremely limited. .

How The Treasury Offset Program Works

Here’s how the Treasury Offset Program works:

  • The TOP will check if your name and taxpayer information are in its delinquent debtor database.
  • If there is a match, TOP will notify you that it is deducting the amount you owe from your tax refund.
  • TOP will send the outstanding amount to the government agency to which you owed the money.
  • If you owe more money than the payment you were going to receive, then TOP will send the entire amount to the other government agency. If you owe less, TOP will send the agency the amount you owed, and then send you the remaining balance.

Here’s an example: you were going to receive a $1,500 federal tax refund. But you are delinquent on a student loan and have $1,000 outstanding. TOP will deduct $1,000 from your tax refund and send it to the correct government agency. It will also send you a notice of its action, along with the remaining $500 that was due to you as a tax refund.

Is it time to start worrying about the missing stimulus check that you qualify for? The IRS has made more than 167 million payments since March — with a new batch of checking going out each week. If you think your $1,400 payment is lost or never sent — maybe you received a letter telling you the IRS sent your payment but you’ve not received it — you may need help trying to track it down. The same goes for the first and second payments from 2020.

It’s possible there’s an issue with your check, or the IRS could have the wrong mailing address on file. Another reason why you may want to track down your payment is if you received less than the amount expected and you’re owed a “plus-up” payment. By the way, in that case, you do not need to file an amended tax form.

The IRS are busy contacting those who haven’t been issued a payment, encouraging them to apply for one before it is too late.

What Information Will The Trace Provide Me

The IRS will process your claim for a missing payment in one of two ways:

    • If the check was not cashed, they will reverse your payment and notify you. If you find the original check, you must return it as soon as possible. You will need to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return to receive credit for EIP 1 and EIP 2, and then claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 tax return for EIP 3, if eligible.
    • If the check was cashed, the Treasury Departments Bureau of the Fiscal Service will send you a claim package that includes a copy of the cashed check. Follow the instructions. The Treasury Departments Bureau of the Fiscal Service will review your claim and the signature on the canceled check before determining whether the payment can be reversed. If reversed, you will need to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020, or 2021 return depending on what EIP payment in reference, if eligible.

I Received A Second Payment But My Spouse Didn’t

Stimulus Check Mailed Out April 24

There have been cases where a couple submit their tax returns as “married filing jointly,” and both spouses are eligible for a $1,400 stimulus check, but one spouse received a payment and the other did not . This is an error on the IRS’s part. Unfortunately, the spouse who didn’t receive a check will have to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on his or her 2020 tax return. See below for instructions on claiming the rebate on your tax return.
