An Expansion To The Child Tax Credit Means Millions Could Get Even More Money

One way families will get even more stimulus money is through a temporary expansion of the 2020 child tax credit. Age is critical here: The new CTC rules bring the credit up to $3,600 per child under age 6, and $3,000 per child between age 6 and 17 for qualifying families.

Payments will begin phasing out for individuals who make more than $75,000 and married couples who make more than $150,000. Payments will occur periodically from July through December 2021. Here’s what to know about child tax credit qualifications, who is a qualified dependent for the CTC and what parents with shared custody should know.

Stimulus checks and the child tax credit aim to help lift kids out of poverty.

Student Loan Payments And Interest Will Be Automatically Suspended On Federally Held Student Loans Through Sept 30

    • Whos generally eligible: The vast majority of federal student loan borrowers are eligible. However, some student loans do not qualify for this benefit, including loans under the Federal Family Education Loan Program, private student loans that are owned by commercial lenders and some Perkins Loans that are held by the institution you attended.
    • How much can you receive: If you qualify, you will receive an automatic suspension of principal and interest payments on federally held student loans through Sept. 30, 2020, though that date may be extended with additional legislation.
    • When might this aid be available: The federal government had already waived student loan payments and interest for 60 days earlier in March, and this new directive extending that period is already in place, retroactive to March 13. Federal student loan borrowers will not need to take any action to suspend payments, as your federal loan servicer will suspend them automatically.

Do Dependents Receive Their Own Stimulus Checks

Dependents don’t receive their own stimulus checks, but they add funds to the household’s total. With the third check, dependents of any age will add up to $1,400 each to the family’s check. The total amount of money allocated in the third payment depends on your adjusted gross income, which you can find on your taxes.

Also Check: Is Economic Impact Payment Same As Stimulus

Who Receives A Stimulus Check Payment

If you fall within the Adjusted Gross Income thresholds shown below and have a Social Security number, you are eligible for each economic impact payment. Those who do not qualify for payments include non-resident aliens, dependents, and estates/trusts.

The amount of payment or credit you qualify for depends on your Adjusted gross income and the number of qualified children with a Social Security Number or Adoption Tax Identification Number you can claim.

For 2020, youll qualify for up to $1,800 in credits for yourself and qualified dependents can increase the amount youre eligible to get by up to $1,100 per qualified dependent . Unfortunately, adult dependents didnt qualify for the first and second stimulus payments.

For 2021, youll qualify for $1,400 in advance credits for yourself and qualified dependents will increase the taxpayers EIP by $1,400 so far. However, adult dependents do qualify the taxpayer to receive additional amounts on the third check.

You can see a detailed breakout of the income limits here:

VERIFY: What Dependents qualify for the $600 stimulus check?

The income limits for this new round of stimulus checks have changed. So even if you previously received a stimulus check, you may not qualify for this one.

The adjusted gross income maximum income for the American Rescue Plan Act are:

    • Individuals earning $80,000
    • Head of households earning $120,000

If your AGI exceeds these amounts, your household will not qualify for the stimulus payment.

Additionally, the phase-out for stimulus reductions is more complicated to calculate this time around. Since the maximum income threshold is fixed, your total stimulus check will be reduced proportionately by the amount earned over $75,000 for individuals, $112,500 for heads of households, or $150,000 for joint filers until it hits the phase-out limits above.

    Nursing Homes And Assisted

Since the payment doesnt qualify as a resource for Medicaid purposes until 12 months after it was first received, nursing homes and assisted living facilities should not require residents to sign over their payment until this period has passed. If you believe a nursing home or assisted living facility has improperly taken the payment from you or a loved one, file a complaint with your states attorney general.

    What Gaos Work Shows

    1. IRS can use data to tailor outreach efforts.

It was challenging for IRS and Treasury to get payments to some peopleespecially nonfilers, or those who are not required to file tax returns. These people were eligible for the payments for a couple of reasons:

    • first, there was no earned income requirement, so Americans with no or very little income could receive economic relief and
    • second, the payments were refundable tax credits, so eligible individuals can claim the full amount even if it exceeds what they owe in taxes.

In 2020, Treasury and IRS used other data to identify and reach out to around 9 million potentially eligible nonfilers. In May 2021, TIGTA identified potentially 10 million individuals eligible for payments, but IRS has no further plans to reach out to these individuals.

We recommended that Treasury and IRS use available data to develop an updated estimate of total eligible individuals which they could use to better tailor and redirect their ongoing outreach and communications efforts for similar tax credits.

    2. Improved collaboration will also help outreach to underserved communities.

We recommended that Treasury and IRS focus on improving interagency collaboration and use data to assess the effectiveness of their efforts to educate more people about refundable tax credits and eligibility requirements.

What Is The Recovery Rebate Credit

The recovery rebate credit is a refundable tax credit that can be claimed on your 2021 return if you did not receive your third stimulus check or received the wrong amount.

An important thing to understand about the third stimulus payment is that it was technically an advance on the 2021 tax credit. Because the IRS did not yet have access to your 2021 tax information when the advance payments were sent out, the agency relied on the most recent information they had on file for you to determine how much to send you based on that year’s income, number of dependents and other qualifying information.

How Much Money Will I Get

    SSDI & Stimulus Checks
    • Adults whose adjusted gross income is less than $75,000/year will get $1,400 for each adult, plus $1,400 for each dependent no matter how old they are. This applies to heads of households who make less than $112,500, as well.
    • The IRS will use income information from your 2020 tax return if they received that return before sending your money. Otherwise they will use information from your 2019 tax return.
    • If the IRS sends your payment based on a 2019 return and then your 2020 return says you qualify for more , they will send an additional payment to make up for the difference. To get the additional payment, you must file the 2020 tax return by 90 days from the filing deadline or September 1, 2021, whichever is earlier.

Can The Government Reduce Or Garnish My Economic Impact Payment

Your Economic Impact Payment will not be subject to most types of federal offset or federal garnishment as a result of defaulted student loans or tax debt. However, the payments are still subject to garnishment if youre behind on child support.

The payments may also still be subject to State or local government garnishment and also to court-ordered garnishments.

What If I Owe Child Support Payments Back Taxes Money To Creditors Or Debt Collectors Or Federal Or State Debt

None of the three stimulus checks can be reduced to pay any federal or state debts and back taxes. Unlike the first stimulus check, your second and third stimulus check cannot be reduced if you owe past-due child support payments.

    Federal or State Debt
    Protected Not protected

If you are claiming the payments as part of your 2020 tax refund , the payments are no longer protected from past-due child support payments, creditor and debt collectors, and other federal or state debt that you owe . In other words, if you receive your first or second stimulus checks as part of your tax refund instead of direct checks, it may be reduced.

Who Is Eligible For The $600 Stimulus Check

A broad-based stimulus check hasn’t been approved but the government has announced that a specific group of Americans will receive another one-time check of $600. The specific group includes meatpacking workers, farmworkers, and grocery employees who were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. The funds will come from a $700 million program authorized to assist workers in these industries.

It isn’t clear yet how the money will be distributed but close to $20 million is expected to be earmarked for workers in grocery stores. This additional payment is a reflection of the essential nature of the work performed during the COVID-19 pandemic. As opposed to the money going through the IRS, state agencies, tribal governments, and non-profit organizations will be providing the funds to eligible workers this time.

Your Dependents Qualify Toward A Third Check With No Age Restrictions

For the first and second stimulus checks, qualified dependents were defined as anyone age 16 or younger . Each dependent counted toward the family total, with no cap on the number of child dependents claimed. That rate was $500 for each dependent as part of the first check, approved in March 2020 as part of the CARES Act, and $600 each for the second stimulus check that was approved and sent in December.

The new American Rescue Plan earmarks $1,400 per dependent of any age, to be included in the checks of their parents or guardians. For the first time, 17-year-olds and adult dependents are also eligible for a payment. This group includes around 13.5 million college students, older adults, and children of all ages with certain disabilities.

For example, there are new income limits and rules for age, citizenship and tax status that can affect the size of your payment. We’ll walk you through what those qualifications are to help you determine whether you should expect a check — or whether you’ll be completely left out.
