New Jersey: $500 Rebate Checks

When will stimulus checks be deposited? Can checks be garnished? We asked the experts

In fall 2021, Gov. Phil Murphy and the New Jersey state legislature approved budget measures to send one-time rebate checks of up to $500 to nearly 1 million families.

New Jersey is also sending $500 payments to those who file taxes using a taxpayer identification number instead of a Social Security number. The Excluded New Jerseyans Fund applies to nonresident and resident aliens, their spouses and dependents.

How Much Will You Get

The California cash-back stimulus check is based on income and the size of the family. For both individual and married filer status, the amount is divided into three layers of payment. The highest stimulus check amount is for individuals with earnings of $75,000 or less. They will get a gas rebate of $350 plus another $350 if they declare any dependent in their recent tax form.

For married couples filing jointly and earning $150,000 or less, the amount comes to $350 for each filer plus another $350 for any dependent. This is the highest cash-back slab and comes to $1,050 for a family of three or more.

For individuals earning between $75,001 and $125,000, the cashback amount is $250, and another $250 for any dependent. For married couples earning between $150,001 and $250,000, the cashback amount is $500 for the couple plus another $250 if they declare any dependent. The maximum possible amount for a family of three or more is $750 under this layer.

The highest income layers are between $125,001 and $250,000 for individuals, and they get a stimulus check of $200 plus the same amount for a dependent. The maximum total amount for a family of three or more comes to $600 under this level.

The tax amount added for a dependent is the same as for the filer and is paid for only one dependent irrespective of the number of declared dependents.

When Will You Receive Your Payment

According to the California Franchise Tax Board website, eligible Californians will receive their payment via direct deposit issued to their bank accounts or via a debit card sent in the mail.

Direct deposit payments are expected to be issued to bank accounts during these windows: Oct. 7, 2022 – Oct. 25, 2022 and Oct. 28, 2022 – Nov. 14, 2022.

State officials said they expect about 90% of direct deposits to be issued in the month of October 2022.

Debit cards are expected to be mailed between Oct. 25, 2022 – Dec. 10, 2022, with the rest receiving the card by Jan. 15, 2023.

State officials said they expect about 95% of all payments – direct deposit and debit cards combined – to be issued by the end of this year.

So who will get paid by direct deposit, and who will receive a debit card?

Generally, direct deposit payments will be made to eligible taxpayers who e-filed their 2020 CA tax return and received their CA tax refund by direct deposit. The remaining eligible taxpayers will receive their payments in the form of a debit card, according to the California Franchise Tax Board website.

How Will They Send My Stimulus Checks

Who Will Get Stimulus Checks First

The IRS will send out the second stimulus checks via direct deposit, paper check and economic impact payment card.

For reference, the majority of the first stimulus check recipients have received their payment via direct deposit. So if you set up direct deposit on a past tax return, you should have gotten your direct cash payment in your on-file bank account by about April 15. That leaves anyone getting a stimulus check in the mail last in line, especially if they have a high AGI.

The IRSs free online portal called Get My Payment allows Americans to track the status of their first and second stimulus check.

If you are required to file a tax return, but you have not done so for 2018 or 2019, then youll need to file a 2019 return to receive a check. But if you were not required to file for tax years 2018 or 2019, the IRS is offering an online tool that allows you to enter your personal and bank account information so that you can get your stimulus check. Those who receive any of the following should not use this tool:

  • Social Security Disability Insurance
  • Social Security Survivor benefits
  • Railroad Retirement and Survivor benefits

Stimulus checks can also come to you via a prepaid debit card called The Economic Impact Payment Card. These cards are backed by the Treasury Departments Bureau of the Fiscal Service. If you receive one, it will arrive in a plain envelope with the sender being Money Network Cardholder Services.

What If I Havent Gotten My Stimulus Check Yet

First, head over to the governments site and sign in to your account to check on your payment status. If it shows the stimulus check was issued to you but you havent gotten it yet, you can run a payment trace to track it down. If the check wasnt cashed, the IRS will reverse the payment, and youll be able to claim it on your taxes. You can do this through the Recovery Rebate Credit.

If the check was cashed , youll have to make a claim and go through a whole process to get your stimulus money. That really stinks. Sorry in advance if you fall into that category. But with any luck, they should be able to straighten things out for you.

Hawaii: $300 Rebate Payments

How Long Does It Take To Get My Stimulus Checks

The IRS announced on December 29 that it has started sending out the second round of stimulus checks to millions of Americans. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that direct payments would go out a few days after the President signed the bill, and paper checks will take the longest.

For a comparison, the first stimulus checks already went out to the vast majority of Americans who are eligible for one. The IRS sent out the first electronic stimulus check payments on April 11, with most having arrived by April 15. The recipients of these initial payments were those who qualify for a check and have filed a tax return via direct deposit in either 2018 or 2019.

The first paper stimulus checks were in the mail as of April 24, 2020, with President Donald J. Trump printed on the memo line. This initial round of physical payments is specifically for individuals with an adjusted gross income of $10,000 or less. Each week after this, an additional five million paper checks will be mailed to those with an AGI of $10,000 above the previous weeks limit . Unfortunately, that means that some Americans did not get their checks until late summer or early fall.

Recipients of Social Security retirement benefits, Social Security survivor benefits, Social Security disability benefits, Supplemental Security Income , Railroad Retirement benefits and VA benefits who have their bank account on file with the IRS will automatically get their second stimulus check via direct deposit .

Will The Payments Cause Inflation

California is not the only state to deploy one-time rebates amid budget surpluses. Florida, for example, is sending $450 to certain families with kids.

A big question prompted by the checks sent by California and other states is whether they will exacerbate inflation.

While California “on net will come out ahead,” it may be impacted as other states export inflation with their refunds, Harvard University economics professor Jason Furman recently tweeted.

“Californians are going to come out behind from any ‘inflation relief payments’ made by Florida and other states,” he wrote.

States are sitting on record surpluses and many individuals are struggling under the weight of extremely high inflation.Jared Walczakvice president of state projects at the Tax Foundation

While states have been deploying one-time payments all year, there has been an uptick as Election Day approaches, noted Jared Walczak, vice president of state projects at the Tax Foundation.

“States are sitting on record surpluses and many individuals are struggling under the weight of extremely high inflation,” Walczak said.

That’s prompting policy makers to put the two together and want to write checks.

“Unfortunately, that’s only fueling further inflation by injecting more money in an overheated economy,” Walczak said.

Social Security: Will Those Collecting Benefits See A Fourth Stimulus Check People Are Still Pushing For One

Those collecting Social Security and SSI payments have been hopeful for a fourth stimulus check as advocacy groups push for more help.

While groups have been working tirelessly to try to get people another payment who need it most, its not likely to happen.

Inflation has only risen and continues to remain incredibly high. As Social Security recipients battle the cost of living on a fixed income, Congress isnt doing much to help.

A petition was created to try and help seniors on Social Security receive a fourth stimulus check worth $1,400. Despite the major support it got, it probably isnt going to happen.

The Senior Citizens League has been the group pushing for the one time payment worth $1,400, according to The Sun. The reason for this is because Social Security and SSI recipients are living on a fixed income. As prices rise, these individuals incomes are not rising to keep up.

A letter was sent to Congress from the Senior Citizens League detailing why the need for a fourth stimulus check existed.

The group shared that theyve received hundreds of emails detailing the struggles seniors on Social Security face. Some are cutting their medication dosage in half while others are cutting back to only eating one meal per day.
