More $1400 Payments Go Out Automatically After Aarp Urges Irs Ssa To Prioritize Federal Beneficiaries

| The IRS has sent a wave of pandemic stimulus checks to government retirees who normally dont file federal income taxes. Now the agency is sending payments to Veterans Affairs beneficiaries who dont normally file taxes. But the Social Security Administration says if you are a beneficiary and havent gotten your stimulus check, you need to file a 2020 tax return now to get any stimulus payments due to you.

To date, the IRS has delivered 164 million stimulus payments worth about $386 billion during the coronavirus relief mandated by the American Rescue Plan Act, which President Joe Biden signed on March 11.

Many low-income beneficiaries including recipients of Social Security retirement and disability benefits, as well as recipients of SSI benefits administered by the Social Security Administration arent required to file tax returns, and some of those payments were delayed. The IRS said it was waiting for updated information from the SSA on bank accounts and addresses of federal beneficiaries to ensure the stimulus payments reach eligible individuals.

AARP has pushed the IRS and the SSA to move more swiftly to get those checks to individuals who dont file federal income taxes.

On March 25 the SSA gave the IRS the updated information required to begin delivering stimulus checks to some 30 million federal beneficiaries still awaiting payments, Saul said.

What Do I Need To Do To Receive The Fourth Stimulus Check

In order to receive the fourth stimulus check, Congress needs to pass additional legislation authorizing more funding for the program. The Treasury Department then needs to disburse the funds to eligible individuals.

The first three rounds of stimulus payments were authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act , which was passed by Congress in March 2020. The CARES Act authorized up to $1,200 per person for those earning less than $75,000 per year, or $2,400 for couples earning less than $150,000 per year. Parents were also given an additional $500 per child.

The second round of stimulus payments, which were authorized by the Consolidated Appropriations Act, were sent out in December 2020. This round of payments was for $600 per person, or $1,200 for couples. Parents were also given an additional $600 per child.

The third round of stimulus payments, which were authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act, were sent out in March and April 2021. This round of payments was for $1,400 per person, or $2,800 for couples. Parents were also given an additional $1,400 per child.

If Congress does not pass additional legislation authorizing more funding for stimulus payments, then there will not be a fourth round of payments. The Treasury Department has said that it does not have the authority to disburse funds for a fourth round of payments without congressional approval.

Child Or Dependent Qualification For The $500 Payment

Will Social Security Get The Fourth Stimulus Check

Several readers have asked questions around the $500 child dependent additional stimulus payment. To get this payment you must have filed a 2018 or 2019 tax return and claimed the child as dependent ANDthe child must be younger than 17-years-old at the end of 2020. They must also be related to you by blood, marriage, or adoption . There is no limit to the number of dependents who can qualify for the additional $500 in one household.

This age limit is much younger than what is used by the IRS in the qualifying child test where a child must be younger than 19 years old or be a student younger than 24 years old as of the end of the calendar year. Hence the confusion being caused by this. So just remember if your child or eligible dependent is 17 or over you cannot claim the stimulus payment for them.

College Kids and High School Seniors

The younger than 17 yr old requirement has ruled out several thousand college students and high school kids who are older than 17, but still being claimed as a dependent by their parents on their federal tax return.

However if you are a college student AND filed a recent tax return you can qualify for a standard/adult stimulus check per the above eligibility rules. But note as soon as you file a return you cannot be claimed as a dependent by others, which means they lose certain other tax benefits and credits.

The proposal came after it was heard from many seniors who shared their hardships in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Shannon Benton with the Senior Citizens League previously told The Sun: “We have received hundreds of emails from people concerned about making ends meet.

“The high cost of living adjustment, for many, just exacerbated their financial woes by bumping their income above program limits to qualify for medicare savings programs and extra help.”

And with inflation remaining high, the need for an injection of financial stimulus remains essential for millions of Americans.

A Denver restaurant owner has created an online petition on Change.org, asking the US congress to provide people with monthly stimulus checks. The petition has collected as many as three million signatures for the time being.

“Our country is still deeply struggling,” reads the description.

“The recovery hasn’t reached many Americans – the true unemployment rate for low-wage workers is estimated at over 20 percent and many people face large debts from last year for things like utilities, rent and child care.

“I’m calling on Congress to support families with a $2,000 payment for adults and a $1,000 payment for kids immediately, and continuing regular checks for the duration of the crisis.

“Otherwise, laid-off workers, furloughed workers, the self-employed, and workers dealing with reduced hours will struggle to pay their rent or put food on the table.”

Social Security Expedites Decisions For People With Severe Disabilities Agency Adds To Compassionate Allowances List

Andrew Saul, Commissioner of Social Security, today announced five new Compassionate Allowances conditions: Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumors, GM1 Gangliosidosis Infantile and Juvenile Forms, Nicolaides-Baraister Syndrome, Rubinstein-Tybai Syndrome, and Secondary Adenocarcinoma of the Brain. Compassionate Allowances is a program to quickly identify severe medical conditions and diseases that meet Social Securitys standards for disability benefits.

Social Securitys top priority is to serve the public, and we remain committed to improving the disability determination process for Americans, said Commissioner Saul. Our Compassionate Allowances program gets us one step closer to reaching our goals by helping us accelerate the disability process for people who are likely to get approved for benefits due to the severity of their condition.

The Compassionate Allowances program quickly identifies claims where the applicants condition or disease clearly meets Social Securitys statutory standard for disability. Due to the severe nature of many of these conditions, these claims are often allowed based on medical confirmation of the diagnosis alone. To date, more than 600,000 people with severe disabilities have been approved through this accelerated, policy-compliant disability process. Over the last decade, the list has grown to a total of 242 conditions, including certain cancers, adult brain disorders, and a number of rare disorders that affect children.

How Will The Stimulus Check Payments Be Made

The IRS has confirmed that payments for most working Americans are expected to be calculated and deposited or mailed via check based on 2018 or 2019 federal tax filing payment details. Most people wont need to take any action and the IRS will calculate and automatically send the economic stimulus payment to those eligible. The Treasury department, under which the IRS falls has also created a website/portal for those who are not required to file U.S. income taxes or who have to change payment information .

For those who have not yet filed their return for 2019, the IRS will use information from their 2018 tax filing to calculate the payment. The economic impact payment will be deposited directly into the same banking account reflected on the last valid return filed. So if your 2018 information is out of date or your income situation changed in 2019, make sure you file, even if you have no taxes due .

Social Security and supplemental security income beneficiaries had been hoping Congress will consider a fourth stimulus check.

The Senior Citizens League, a non-partisan advocacy group, has been calling for the one-time $1,400 stimulus check for Social Security claimants, who are among the hardest hit by higher prices.

The group sent a letter to Congress last year, stating the cost-of-living adjustment, combined with inflation, will hit hard for many older Americans who are on a fixed income.

The high cost of living adjustment, for many, just exacerbated their financial woes by bumping their income above program limits to qualify for medicare savings programs and extra help.

Theres a petition on Change.org which has gotten more than 3 million signatures.

It was started by a Denver restaurant owner.

Its asking Congress to provide monthly stimulus checks of $2,000 for adults and $1,000 for children for the duration of the crisis.
