Will We Have Another Stimulus Check

Date:

When Will A Second Stimulus Check Be Issued

Will we see another $1,200 stimulus check now that election day is over?

The government began sending direct deposit payments on December 28, 2020. Paper checks were sent out starting on December 30, 2020.

Payments are automatically sent to:

  • Eligible individuals who filed a 2019 tax return.
  • Social Security recipients, including Social Security Disability Insurance , railroad retirees, and Supplemental Security and Veteran Affairs beneficiaries.
  • Individuals who successfully registered for the first stimulus check online using the IRS Non-Filers tool or who submitted a simplified tax return that has been processed by the IRS

There is no action that you have to take to get your second stimulus check. People who provided their banking information with the IRS shouldve received their stimulus checks by direct deposit. Social Security and Veterans Affairs beneficiaries who received the first payment via Direct Express shouldve received the second payment the same way.

The IRS sent paper checks or prepaid debit cards to people who did not provide their banking information. Mailed payments may be delivered in a different format than the first stimulus check.

All second stimulus checks were issued by January 15, 2021. If you didnt get a second stimulus check by then , you can claim your second stimulus check as the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit on your 2020 tax return or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.

The Omicron Variant Didnt Slow Down Job Gains

Unlike last year though, when the Omicron variant pushed new infections to levels much higher than at any time during the pandemic, the US recorded significant job gains. Data collected in the middle of the surge reported 467,000 new hires, over three times what analysts had expected. Additionally, there are more job openings than there are workers available to take them pushing up wages as businesses try to attract employees.

On the other hand, 6 million people, nearly twice as many as in December, could not work or lost hours over the previous month due to the pandemic disrupting normal business at their place of employment. The incredibly fast rise in infections from the highly contagious Omicron variant fortunately appears to have reversed just as quickly.

Who Is Eligible For The $1400 Stimulus Checks

Unlike the other two stimulus payments, this round of checks will be more limited. To qualify for a full $1,400 stimulus check, a single person must make no more than $75,000. Married couples making up to $150,000 are eligible for $2,800. Money for qualifying dependents will also be part of the payments.

The stimulus payment amounts are lower for Americans with incomes above those thresholds, and phase out entirely for single Americans making over $80,000 and couples earning over $160,000. That differs from the cutoffs on the first and second stimulus checks $100,000 for individuals and $200,000 for married couples. However, fewer dependents qualified in the earlier rounds of checks.

A Timeline Of Past Stimulus Checks

The pandemic stimulus payments started nearly two years ago.

Stimulus checks were first deposited in the spring of 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic was just beginning, driving up the unemployment rate and causing financial hardship for many. Individuals with income below $75,000 received $1,200 and couples earning below $150,000 received $2,400.

The Trump administration then in December 2020 $600 per individual taxpayer, $1,200 per married couple and an additional $600 for each child under the age of 17.

A third round came under the Biden administration in March 2021, giving $1,400 per individual and $2,800 per married couple, along with $1,400 per dependent this time regardless of age.

How Likely Is A Fourth Stimulus Check

Don’t hold your breath, according to Wall Street analysts.

For one, the Biden administration has focused on infrastructure spending to spark economic growth, betting that an investment in roads, trains and other direct investments will help get people back to work and spur the ongoing recovery.

Secondly, economists have pointed fingers at relief efforts such as the three rounds of stimulus checks for contributing to inflation. Because Americans had cash in their pockets, they boosted spending on goods such as furniture, cars and electronics. Combine that with the supply-chain crunch, and the result was sharply higher inflation, according to economists.

Without new stimulus efforts on the horizon, it’s likely that inflation could moderate in 2022, according to Brad McMillan, the chief investment officer at Commonwealth Financial Network. “One cause of inflation has been an explosion of demand driven by federal stimulus,” he noted in a December report. “But that stimulus has now ended.”

He added, “Yes, we will continue to face inflation and supply problems, but they are moderating and will keep doing so.”

Minnesota: $750 Payments For Frontline Workers

Some frontline workers could receive a one-time payment of $750, thanks to a bill signed by Gov. Tim Walz in early May.

Eligible workers must have worked at least 120 hours in Minnesota between March 15, 2020 and June 30, 2021, and were not eligible for remote work. Workers with direct Covid-19 patient-care responsibilities must have had an annual income of less than $175,000 between Dec. 2019 and Jan. 2022 workers without direct patient-care responsibilities must have had an income of less than $85,000 annually for the same period. Applications for the payment are now closed.

Walz recently proposed using the states $7 billion budget surplus to fund a generous relief package, proposing that Minnesotans receive tax rebate checks of $1,000 per person. Doing so would require action from the state legislature.

Fourth Stimulus Check Possible Timeline

In Brief Episode 16: Will millions of Americans get another stimulus check?

Right now, there is no fourth stimulus check timeline or fourth stimulus check release date. Until legislation is in motion, we can’t say how soon more relief money might arrive. We can’t say whether more relief money is coming, at all.

That said, the third stimulus check timeline happened rather quickly following Biden’s inauguration Jan. 20. It only took a few weeks for Congress to debate his American Rescue Plan. Once the president signed the bill on March 11, $1,400 checks were put in motion.

The IRS can begin sending out possible fourth stimulus checks in the same manner it sent the previous stimulus payments. Since the framework is already in place, Americans could begin receiving the fourth stimulus checks about two weeks after a relief bill allowing another round of direct payments is approved.

What Is A Plus

A plus-up payment is basically just a bonus amount that you probably should have gotten the first time you filed your taxes. The IRS actually owes more money to some people based on their tax returns. If the IRS used your 2019 tax information to dish out your stimulus payment but your 2020 taxes show that it underpaid youyou might be in for a plus-up payment based on your income. But remember, this isnt for everyoneonly those who had a change in income or dependents would qualify for more stimulus money.

States Start Shutting Down Again

Early on in the pandemic, many states imposed lockdowns in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19. That meant that nonessential businesses weren’t allowed to operate, which led to the loss of millions of jobs within weeks.

While we may not see the same extreme shutdowns at this stage of the pandemic, states could start imposing restrictions and capacity limits for businesses again. That could, in turn, hinder a lot of local economic recoveries. And if that happens, it’ll be easier to make the argument that the public needs another round of direct aid.

While the federal government is unlikely to issue another stimulus check, state governments are continuing to send taxpayers financial relief. Millions of California taxpayers started receiving a “middle-class tax refund” last week, with payments of up to $1,050 being sent out through January.

Other states are issuing one-time payments to help residents grapple with the bumpy economy: Colorado taxpayers have already started getting $750 tax refund checks, while eligible Virginians should receive a $250 rebate by Halloween, and Massachusetts will start disseminating tax rebates in November.

A Fourth Stimulus Check Would Face Resistance

The battle to pass Bidens $1.9 trillion COVID rescue package last month highlights the challenges of getting any additional stimulus check or checks approved.

The bill got no support from Republicans in Congress, who all voted against it. Even moderate Democrats were skeptical about the need for the legislation’s third round of direct payments.

Democratic leaders pushed the bill through using a budget maneuver that allowed for passage with simple majorities. They could try the same tactic with the relief package for families.

But adding a new dimension of difficulty is the way Biden wants to pay for his new plan: by raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans. That’s sure to draw solid opposition from Republicans, and some Democrats could come out against the tax hikes, too.

The IRS has confirmed that payments for most working Americans are expected to be calculated and deposited or mailed via check based on 2018 or 2019 federal tax filing payment details. Most people wont need to take any action and the IRS will calculate and automatically send the economic stimulus payment to those eligible. The Treasury department, under which the IRS falls has also created a website/portal for those who are not required to file U.S. income taxes or who have to change payment information .

For those who have not yet filed their return for 2019, the IRS will use information from their 2018 tax filing to calculate the payment. The economic impact payment will be deposited directly into the same banking account reflected on the last valid return filed. So if your 2018 information is out of date or your income situation changed in 2019, make sure you file, even if you have no taxes due .
