Sprectrum offering credit for internet outage

You can get the FCCs Emergency Broadband Benefit program if you meet one of the following qualifications:

  • Your gross household income is at or below 135% of federal poverty guidelines
  • You already qualify for a program like Lifeline, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program , Medicaid or a federal Pell Grant
  • You experienced a substantial loss of income since Feb. 29, 2020 due to job loss or furlough, as long as your household income for 2020 was at or below $99,000 for single filers and $198,000 for joint filers
  • You are approved for the free or reduced price school breakfast/lunch program, including through the USDA Community Eligibility Provision
  • You live on Tribal lands

Remember, you only need to meet one of these requirements to qualify for the $50/mo. internet benefit.

Higher Income Limits For Many

Both the ACP and the previous Emergency Broadband Benefit Program provide subsidies to low-income households to enable them to afford high-speed internet access, but they arent identical.

Income guidelines. Households with incomes of up to 200 percent of federal poverty guidelines are eligible for the ACP. Under the old rules, income was capped at 135 percent of federal poverty guidelines, except for those who experienced a significant loss of income because of job loss or furlough after Feb. 29, 2020.

You may qualify

The income limit for the Affordable Connectivity Program increases with the number of people living in the same household.

That job loss exception was eliminated in the ACP. So to qualify, a family of three can have an income of up to $46,060 this year, compared with $29,646 in 2021.

Benefit: The maximum monthly benefit changed to $30 a month from $50 a month for households not located on tribal lands. Households on Native American tribal lands qualify for up to $75 a month. Alaska, New Mexico and Oklahoma are the states with the highest percentages of Native Americans, according to the Census Bureau.

Eligible households also can receive a onetime discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer or tablet from participating providers if the consumer contributes $10 to $50 toward the purchase price.

Participating providers

The countrys inflation rate peaked after the first quarter of the fiscal year 2022. The inflation rate of 9.1 percent broke all previous records as it stood at a 41-year high with steep spikes in fuel and food prices and rents.

As a result of this sharp increase in prices for basic amenities and commodities, more families were pushed into the low-income household category. Millions of families are relying on government subsidies and assistance programs to make ends meet.

One such initiative was the Affordable Connectivity Program . It was launched by the Federal Communications Commission to ensure that all American households can afford high-speed internet access for education, work, and access to a myriad of online services.

Spectrum joined the league of 20 internet service providers that agreed to partner with the FCC for the wide-scale implementation of the Affordable Connectivity Program.

The Spectrum Affordable Connectivity Program is available to all households who qualify for the monthly $30 credit towards their broadband connections.

Additional Information About The Emergency Broadband Benefit

The program is temporary and will end when the $3.2 billion that has been allocated for the benefit runs out or six months have passed after the Department of Health and Human Services declares an end to the covid-19 health emergency, whichever is sooner. Participating households will need to opt-in to continue receiving broadband services from their provider after the program ends and will be on the hook for the broadband providers general monthly rate.

Keep in mind that not all Internet plans are eligible, particularly ultrafast ones. If your internet is bundled with your cable TV or voice service, the coupon technically can only be used to pay for internet, so you may need to get your provider separate out that portion of the bill to subtract the coupon amount. To find a participating provider the program provides a search tool using your zip code.

Things To Keep In Mind About Spectrum

  • No senior discount plan: Spectrum does not provide a senior-specific discount plan or senior discounts, but this is standard across the industry. We’ll discuss how to save on Spectrum plans further throughout this page.
  • Limited plans available: Currently, Spectrum only provides three Internet plans. While this makes choosing a plan less complicated, you won’t have as much variety as with some other providers.
  • Lower customer-service satisfaction: In 2020, Spectrum scored a 63 in customer satisfaction, which is just one point below the industry average of 64. This does not mean the service is bad by any means, it just indicates that it is not a leader in customer support in the Internet provider industry.

The Emergency Broadband Benefit is a program run by the Federal Communications Commission. Its designed to make sure families dont lose access to an essential resource during the pandemic.

“No one should have to choose between paying their internet bill or paying to put food on the table,” says the FCCs acting chairwoman, Jessica Rosenworcel, in a release.

“With the help of the Emergency Broadband Benefit, we have a new way for households to access virtual learning, for patients to connect to telehealth providers and for those struggling in this pandemic to learn new online skills and seek their next job,” Rosenworcel says.

Working with broadband providers, the FCC is offering:

  • Up to $50 a month off your broadband service and associated equipment rentals.

  • A discount of up to $75 a month on your broadband service if your home is on qualifying tribal lands.

  • A one-time discount of up to $100 on a laptop, tablet or desktop computer.

Combined with benefits like the expanded child tax credit from President Joe Bidens first stimulus bill, the new relief will help provide families with a strong financial cushion to ride out the coming months.

Will I Receive The Ebb Funds To Help Pay For My Service

No, the EBB will pay participating broadband internet providers directly. Additionally, if your service costs less than that discount allowance, you will not receive the remaining monthly funds. For instance, if your service is $40 but you receive a $50 discount, you do not pocket the extra $10.

If your monthly bill exceeds the EBB discount, you are responsible for paying the remainder.

How to get a credit on your Spectrum bill after last week’s outages

Silicon Valley will likely see a culture shift after all the carnage at Twitter, Meta, and elsewhere, but it may not be a long-term switch.

If a return to hustle culture is bubbling up from this weeks bloodbath of layoffs, Esther Crawford may be that movements poster child. A of Crawford a director of product management at Twitter sleeping on the floor of the office went viral on Twitter last week as Elon Musk prepared to lay off half the company. Evan Jones, a product manager who reports to Crawford, captioned it when you need something from your boss at Elon Twitter.

The photo sparked a debate around just how devoted you should be to your job, with some replies labeling office all-nighters as would-be labor violations and fodder for trauma bonding while others commended Crawford for her dedication.

Large tech companies have been on a hiring spree for years. Compared with startups, Big Tech has long offered employees a better work-life balance and thanks to the talent shortage less aggressive performance management, leading to the rest and vest stereotype immortalized in Silicon Valleys portrayal of Big Head drinking Double Gulps on the roof at Hooli. But with seemingly endless growth no longer in the cards, that may be about to change.

Crawford sleeping at the office seemed to exemplify this shift, and among those who expressed support were similarly minded tech leaders. Former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman was one such founder who cheered Crawford on.

What Is The Affordable Connectivity Program

The Affordable Connectivity Program is a government assistance program that was first introduced by the Federal Communications Commission in 2020 to battle the adverse effects of the pandemic. In the wake of Covid-19 mayhem, the US government realized that many people in the country were at a severe disadvantage due to the digital divide. They couldnt resume their work and education online because of the lack of internet access.

To bridge this digital divide and make the internet affordable for all, the government suggested the launch of the Affordable Connectivity Program in its Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. $14.2 billion were allocated for long-term broadband affordability for Americans. The act came into effect in November 2021 and since then Spectrum along with 19 other internet providers is giving its customers a chance to sign up for the Affordable Connectivity Program.

All low-income households are given $30 per month for the payment of their internet bills. Those families who live on Tribal lands are given $75 per month in credit toward their broadband services.

Under the ACP scheme, qualifiers were given a $100 discount on the purchase of a device like a laptop, desktop, and tablet . Unfortunately, Spectrum customers are not eligible for this one-time discount on devices.

Families previously enrolled in the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program were given a 60-day grace period to switch to ACP and benefit from this long-term government assistance.
