I Still Haven’t Gotten My First Stimulus Check

Date:

When Should You Request An Irs Payment Trace

Still haven’t gotten the first stimulus check? Here’s what you need to do

Since the third stimulus checks are still being sent, you could hold out a little longer before taking action. If you didn’t get your first or second check at all, though, it’s time to do something. This chart shows when you can and should request an IRS payment trace, which is designed to hunt down a stimulus check the agency says it sent. More below on exactly how a payment trace works, how to get started and when to use it.

What Is The Reason I Did Not Receive A Stimulus Check

There are a few possible reasons you did not receive a payment.

The income requirements for the third round of checks has changed and your earnings could push you above the threshold for a check.

Checks were sent to individuals with an AGI below $75,000, rising to $150,000 for married couples filing jointly and $112,500 for heads of household.

Those who haven’t filed their tax returns for 2020 will have their 2019 forms used to determine how much they receive.

If you changed bank account in the past year and haven’t updated your tax files then the money could be sent to the wrong place.

Americans may be struggling to receive stimulus checks because of money sent to the wrong accounts.

Your money could have been picked up by a debt collector such as if you owe money on loans or credit cards.

  • Your check is coming by mail

The IRS has prioritized sending checks to those whose direct deposit details it has on file.

How many are owed a stimulus check

A recent report from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration shows that 10million people are still waiting on their stimulus payments. While most received them in form of a paper check and direct deposit, others selected to get them in a debit card.

But many mistook those cards as junk mail and regrettably threw them out.The report by TIGTA said that manually verifying the stimulus claims and debit card policies has delayed the payments for many people.

Who Might Qualify For The Recovery Rebate Credit

The income requirements for the recovery rebate tax credit are the same as for the stimulus payments. So if a stimulus check missed you or you received a partial payment, you may be eligible for additional cash if you file a federal tax return and claim the credit.

Note that if you determine the IRS issued you a stimulus check but it got lost, you should not file for the recovery rebate credit but instead ask the tax agency to trace the payment.

Can I Claim A Stimulus Check For Someone Who Is Deceased

Yes. For the third stimulus check, people who have died on or after January 1, 2021, are eligible to receive the third stimulus check. However, for married military couples, the date of eligibility is expanded. If the person who died was a member of the military and died before January 1, 2021, the surviving spouse can still receive the third stimulus check, even if they dont have an SSN.

For the first and second stimulus check, the IRS has stated that people who died on or after January 1, 2020, are eligible to receive both payments.

If they didnt receive the stimulus payments or didnt receive the full amounts that they are eligible for, spouses or other family members can file a 2020 federal tax return and claim it as part of their tax refund or use GetCTC.org if they dont have a filing requirement. The deadline to use GetCTC.org is November 15, 2021.

Stimulus Checks Could Be Seized To Cover Past Due Debt

I Still Haven T Received My Stimulus Check

If you owe child support or other debts, your first check was seized to cover those debts. The third check is subject to being taken by private debt collectors, but not the state or federal government. The same goes for the second payment, too, if you’re claiming missing money in a recovery rebate credit. You may receive a notice from the Bureau of the Fiscal Service or your bank if either of these scenarios happens.

In the case of the third check, we recommend calling your bank to confirm the garnishment request from creditors and ask for details about how long you have to file a request with a local court to stop the garnishment. If you think money has already been mistakenly seized from the first two checks, you can file a recovery rebate credit as part of your 2020 tax return — but only if you filed a tax extension.

You can track down your stimulus payment without picking up the phone.

Finding The Amounts Of Your First Second And Third Stimulus Checks

To find the amount of stimulus payment youve received, you can:

  • Refer to the IRS notices that were mailed to you. IRS Notice 1444shows how much you received from the first stimulus check. IRS Notice 1444-B shows how much you received from the second stimulus check. IRS Notice 1444-C shows how much you received from the third stimulus check.
  • Check your bank statements. If you had your payments direct deposited, you can find the amount of your first, second, and third stimulus check using your bank statements. They should be labeled as IRS TREAS 310 and have a code of either TAXEIP1 , TAXEIP2 , or TAXEIP3 .
  • Request an account transcript. You can request an account transcript sent electronically or by mail using Get Transcript. You can also call the IRS automated phone transcript service at 800-908-9946 or mail in Form 4506-T to have your transcript be sent by mail.
  • Create an account on IRS.gov/account. You can view your stimulus check amounts under the Tax Records tab. If you filed jointly with your spouse, you will only see your half of the stimulus check amounts. Your spouse will need to sign into their own account to see the other half of the stimulus check amounts.

To create an account, you will need:

  • Basic information: full name, email, birthday, Social Security Number or Individual Tax Identification Number , tax filing status, and current address.
  • Is There A Deadline To Get My Third Stimulus Check

If you will be filing a full tax return, you have until the IRS closes their tax filing software on November 20, 2021. After this date, you can still claim the third stimulus check in 2022 by filing your taxes for Tax Year 2021.

If youre not required to file taxes, the deadline to use GetCTC.org is November 15, 2021. You can get the Recovery Rebate Credit using GetCTC.org, a simplified tax filing portal for non-filers. GetCTC is an IRS-approved service created by Code for America in partnership with the White House and U.S. Department of Treasury. You can use the portal even if youre not signing up for the Child Tax Credit advance payments.

Still Haven’t Received Your First $1200 Stimulus Check What You Need To Do

While Congress is deadlocked on another coronavirus relief package that’s widely expected to include a second stimulus check, millions of Americans are still awaiting the arrival of their first $1,200 cash payment.

At the beginning of June, the IRS still had to pay out between 30 million and 35 million checks, according to the House Ways and Means Committee. But two months later, the agency “appears to have made little progress towards issuing the remaining payments,” a letter from House Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal and Sen. Ron Wyden, the top-ranking Democrat in the Senate Finance Committee, says.

Between early June and late July, the IRS had made fewer than 1.5 million additional stimulus payments, an “unacceptable pace,” the lawmakers said.

“Americans cannot wait any longer for the emergency assistance they were told would arrive in the spring,” the letter, dated July 27, said. “Treasury must take immediate and decisive action to pay all eligible Americans.”

At the end of June, IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig testified the agency had distributed some 160 million economic impact payments, worth roughly $270 billion, since April. During that testimony, Rettig said the IRS was dealing with a backlog of paper tax returns and was focused on trying to send stimulus payments to those filers.

Still haven’t received your stimulus payment? You aren’t alone

    Required:

    • First name, middle initial, and last name
    • Social Security Number or Individual Identification Number
    • Dependents in 2020: First and last name, SSN, relationship to you. Check the box if they qualify for the CTC.

Note: these fields are required for both you and your spouse if you are married filing jointly. If you have a new qualifying child in 2021, you will be able to provide their information in a separate tool this summer.

    Optional info:

    • Check the box if you or your spouse can be claimed by someone else as a dependent
    • Recovery Rebate Credit amount: If you didnt get the full first or second stimulus check, you can enter the amount you are owed
    • Bank account routing info: If you leave this blank, your payments will be mailed.
    • Identity Protection PIN: only include if the IRS provided you a number because youve experienced identity theft.

Heres how you calculate how much you are owed.

First stimulus check: $1,200 OR $2,400 + $500 per dependent

What If My Bank Account Information Changed How Will I Get My Second Stimulus Check

Unfortunately, if your second stimulus check is sent to an account that is closed or no longer active, the IRS will not reissue the payment to you by mail. Instead, if you are eligible to get a payment, you can claim the stimulus check on your 2020 tax return as the Recovery Rebate Credit or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.

You Had A Lifestyle Change In 2020 That Wasnt Reflected In Your 2019 Taxes

A lot can change in a year, and its very possible the IRS didnt have enough up-to-date information accurately reflecting your financial situation.

A few circumstances that could qualify you for more money: You had a baby in 2020, or adopted or fostered a child. Less common, say you share joint custody with a child but only rotate that responsibility every other year. You might be eligible for extra money by filing for a credit, and there are instances when your former spouse might pocket extra money as well.

Say I filed with Susie Q. in 2019 and I got the stimulus checks for that child, and then my divorced spouse filed with Susie Q. for 2020. She would get the Recovery Rebate Credit as well, says Mark Jaeger, director of tax development at TaxAct. Its a little bit of double dipping, but it is something that is allowed.

Additionally, maybe you got married or divorced. Perhaps you graduated college and started working, meaning youre no longer considered a dependent. And, as is likely the case for millions of Americans, perhaps you had a higher-paying job in 2019 but lost that position in 2020. Even individuals who were working in 2019 but retired in 2020 could be eligible for the credit.

These are just a sampling of circumstances that might mean youre eligible for a stimulus check or a higher amount.

Theres a lot of reasons why you may be due more that are all legitimate, Steber says. Its real money, and its a lot of money.

You Are Waiting For A Check By Mail

In April, the IRS estimated that waiting for a check by mail could take up to five months. Once you have signed up for a bank account or a prepaid debit card number, you can enter it on your taxes or the non-filer site to get your payment faster through a direct deposit. However, if you filed taxes earlier this year or last year, you can no longer add bank information to receive direct deposit after May 13th.Local banks are offering lower cost, safe accounts for people who need a bank account through Bank On. Still Haven’t Gotten Your Stimulus Check Here’s What To Do

The IRS says it’s sent all the coronavirus stimulus checks from last year, but if you haven’t received yours there is still hope.

The Internal Revenue Service announced this week that it had sent out all the coronavirusstimulus checks approved last year. Some eligible people may have still not received their direct payment. Such people either need to wait as their checks could be in transit, or they need to claim their payment when they file their 2020 taxes.

Check The Get My Payment Tool

The IRS website has been uploading data for your third stimulus payment into a tool on its website called Get My Payment. If your information has been updated, you’ll be able to see the date you can expect to receive your stimulus payment, or the date it was deposited or mailed. You should also be able to see whether your money was direct deposited or whether you’ll be receiving the payment by mail.

Many people are seeing a message that says either the IRS doesn’t have enough information yet or you aren’t eligible for the payment. This message doesn’t necessarily mean you aren’t eligible for the payment. This information may be updated this coming weekend.

Here are some of the issues people are seeing, either with their actual deposit or with the Get My Payment tool.

My Stimulus Payment Was Too High

Amid talk of 4th stimulus check, some still haven’t received the last one

Some individuals whose income increased too much in 2019 were not eligible for a full stimulus payment, but they got one anyway since the IRS based the payment on their 2018 taxes. Those individuals will not have to pay back the payment.

In other cases, families were paid an extra $500 or $600 for children who were 17 or older . This could happen if the IRS took the number of children who qualified for the child tax credit in 2018 without updating children’s ages for 2019. But in other cases, it looks like the IRS took the number of dependents from a family’s 2018 tax return, without regard to their age. The IRS has said that those who received such overpayments will not have to pay them back.

What To Do If You Have Not Received Any Of The 3 Stimulus Checks While Eligible For Payments

Americans who have not received stimulus payments under the three laws passed in Congress are most likely low-income non-filers and will have to do additional paperwork with the IRS.

If you are one of the Americans who have not yet received any of the three stimulus checks distributed by the federal government through the Internal Revenue Service while you were eligible, you are most likely among the low-income people for whom the agency does not have information to process the payment.

Many of the cases of beneficiaries who have not yet received coronavirus stimulus checks are low-income individuals who are not required to file IRS tax returns. This means that the agency does not have the information on file to process the so-called Economic Impact Payments for this population.

The agency has recommended in these instances that individuals file a tax return as soon as possible even if they are not required to do so and claim the amount or amounts owed for stimulus checks through a Refund Recovery Credit.

In cases where the IRS provided an underpayment or without the extra dependent credits, taxpayers can also claim this money through the referred credit on the return this year.

In fact, the IRS reported this week that it is processing payments applicable to tax returns of individuals who filed their tax information this season for the first time because of the above reason.
