Who Was Eligible For A Third Stimulus Check

Under the terms, individuals could receive up to $1,400 through the third stimulus checks. Couples who file jointly could get up to $2,800. Additionally, eligible dependents could also receive $1,400.

To qualify, you had to be either a U.S. citizen or resident alien in 2021. You also had to have a valid Social Security number, though there are certain exceptions for spouses or dependents.

You also could not have been claimed as someone else’s dependent on a 2020 tax return in order to qualify for your own payment.

To be eligible for a full payment, your adjusted gross income could not be above certain thresholds: $75,000 for individuals, $112,500 for heads of household or $150,000 for married couples.

Payments were phased out for those with incomes above those levels, and cut off completely for individuals with $80,000 in adjusted gross income, heads of household with $120,000 and married couples with $160,000.

What To Do If You Cant Find Your Stimulus Check

If your IRS online account shows that you should have received a stimulus payment, but you didnât get it, thereâs a chance it could have been lost in the mail. Or you might have thrown away the prepaid debit card you received.

If you lost your stimulus check or suspect it was stolen, you can request the IRS trace your payment. If the IRS determines your check hasnât been cashed, it will issue a credit to your account. It canât reissue your payment, but you can claim the payment on your 2021 tax return using the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit worksheet.

If a trace is initiated and the IRS determines that the check wasnât cashed, the IRS will credit your account for that payment. However, the IRS canât reissue your payment. Instead, you will need to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 tax return if eligible.

The third payments differed from the earlier payments in several respects:

  • Income phaseout amounts changed. Payments were reduced for individuals with adjusted gross income of more than $75,000 . The reduced payments ended at $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for married filing jointly. People above these levels did not receive any payment.
  • Payment amounts are different. Most families received $1,400 per person, including all dependents claimed on their tax return. Typically, this means a single person with no dependents received $1,400, while married filers with two dependents received $5,600.
  • Qualifying dependents expanded. Unlike the first two payments, the third payment was not restricted to children under 17. Eligible individuals received a payment based on all of their qualifying dependents claimed on their return, including older relatives like college students, adults with disabilities, parents and grandparents.

While the deadlines for the first two Economic Impact Payments have passed, the third stimulus check, worth up to $1,400 per person, is still available if you haven’t already gotten it.

According to CNBC.com, the majority of qualified beneficiaries of the payments permitted by the American Rescue Plan in March 2021 had already received stimulus payments via direct deposit or mailed checks as of January 2022. If you haven’t gotten a payment, your only option is to file a 2021 tax return, which is due on April 18.

The 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, the third stimulus check, was issued based on your income and the number of dependents stated on your 2020 or 2019 tax return. As a result, if you have qualified dependents in 2021, you may owe money. You may also be entitled for a stimulus credit if you did not file a return in 2019 or 2020.

A. There are two ways overseas Americans can get their third stimulus payment: Direct deposit or through the mail.

If you didnt get the third stimulus check, heres what you should do

The last 2021 stimulus payment has been issued, the Internal Revenue Service said Wednesday, but if you did not get yours, you are not out of luck yet.

According to the IRS, if you did not get a stimulus check but are eligible for one, you must use the recovery rebate credit on your 2021 income tax return to claim the $1,400-per-person economic impact payment.

The agency also reminds parents that if you had a child born in 2021 and that child did not receive a payment, you can also claim the payment via the recovery rebate.

If you are unsure about your payments, look for a Letter 6475 from the IRS that shows that you either had a payment sent to you, or that you are entitled to and can claim the recovery rebate credit on your 2021 tax return.

Contribute To A Traditional Ira

If your AGI is a bit too high, contributing to a traditional individual retirement account might be the key to getting a third stimulus checkâif you donât have a retirement plan like a 401 through your job.

You can contribute up to $6,000, or $7,000 if youâre 50 or older, to a traditional IRA before April 15, 2020. If you donât have a retirement plan through work, you can deduct the full amount of your contributions from your taxable income.

If youâre single and took home $81,000 in gross income in 2020, contributing $6,000 to a traditional IRA would lower your AGI to $75,000 and earn you a full stimulus check.

As an added bonus, if your spouse didnât earn income in 2020, they can still contribute to a spousal IRA, which could allow you to deduct up to another $6,000 , depending on your income level.

⢠Potential Income Reduction Amount: $6,000 to $14,000, depending on marital status, age, income level and access to workplace retirement plan.

Max Out Your Hsa Contributions

If you have a high-deductible health plan âthat means an annual deductible of at least $1,400 for an individual or $2,800 for a familyâyouâre generally eligible for a health savings account.

Like its tax-advantaged retirement brethren, the traditional IRA, an HSA can let you squirrel tax-deductible money for the previous year up until April 15th of the following year. Each dollar you contribute to an HSA reduces your AGI.

Whatâs nice about last-minute HSA contributions is that there are no income caps, meaning you can sneak in an eleventh-hour deduction no matter how much you earn. There are total contribution limits, however. For 2020, HSA contributions are limited to $3,550 for individuals and $7,100 for families. If you turned 55 or older in 2020, you can sock away another $1,000 on top of each of those limits.

There are a couple of caveats. First, if your employer made any contributions to your HSA, the total amount you can contribute is reduced by that amount.

Next, due to a weird quirk of HSA law, if you only got an HDHP in December 2020, you can still contribute as if you had a plan the whole year. But if for any reason you move out of an HDHP during the next calendar year, youâll owe income taxes plus a 10% penalty on 11/12 of your contribution limit from 2020. Confusing? Yes, 12 times out of 12.

Long story short, if you came late to the HDHP party but might be bowing out early in 2021, you probably donât want to stash away a ton of money this way.

If you don’t typically file a federal income tax return, this is the step-by-step process you should complete to claim your money.

First, you need to provide the following information:

  • Step 1: Full name, current mailing address, and email address.
  • Step 2: Date of birth and valid Social Security number.
  • Step 3: Bank account number, type, and routing number, if you have one.
  • Step 4: Identity Protection Personal Identification Number you received from the IRS earlier this year, if you have one.
  • Taxpayers who previously have been issued an Identity Protection PIN but lost it, must use the Get an IP PIN tool to retrieve their numbers.
  • Step 5: Drivers license or state-issued ID, if you have one.

Stimulus Checks For Dependents Va Beneficiaries

Payments to Department of Veterans Affairs beneficiaries who dont normally file taxes and who didnt use the IRS online Non-Filers tool last year started going out April 9, with a payable date of April 14. The batch of 2 million stimulus payments, worth more than $3.4 million, also went to eligible people who had not filed a tax return until this year and didnt use the IRS Non-Filers Tool last year. Some of these payments were what the IRS calls plus-up payments to those who got stimulus payments based on their 2019 returns and then filed 2020 returns.

The third round of stimulus checks, authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act, provides a maximum of $1,400 to eligible individuals, $2,800 to couples and $1,400 to dependents. Unlike the previous two rounds, theres no age limit on stimulus checks for dependents, so its possible to get a check for a dependent college-age student or an aged parent. Because dependents are claimed on tax returns, the IRS can use that information to send out stimulus payments for dependents to tax filers.
