5 Reasons Why You May Not Have Received 3rd Stimulus Payment

As was the case with the first and second check, if you filed a 2018, 2019 or 2020 tax return or receive government benefits, the IRS should automatically send your third check without you having to do anything.

If, however, you’re a nonfiler, a US citizen or permanent resident, had a gross income in 2019 under $12,200 — or $24,400 as a married couple — and didn’t file a return for 2018 or 2019, you may need to give the IRS a bit of information before it can process your payment. Since the IRS’ Non-Filers tool is now closed, you may need to file for that money on a 2021 tax return in the form of a recovery rebate credit, described above.

Here’s more information about who should file an amended tax form and who shouldn’t.

Receiving your stimulus check money isn’t always easy.

Who Qualifies For The Third Stimulus Payments

Generally, if youâre a U.S. citizen and not a dependent of another taxpayer, you qualify for the full third stimulus payment. In addition, your adjusted gross income canât exceed:

  • $150,000 for married filing jointly
  • $112,500 for heads of household
  • $75,000 for single filers

A partial payment may be available if your income exceeds the thresholds. However, you will not receive any payment if your AGI is at least:

  • $160,000 for married filing jointly
  • $120,000 for heads of household
  • $80,000 for single filers

The full amount of the third stimulus payment is $1,400 per person and an additional $1,400 for each qualifying dependent.

Stimulus Check Never Arrived Heres What To Do

It has been long enough since the checks were supposed to arrive that it is worth checking in to see what happened.

So far, the IRS has paid out 169 million stimulus checks in the third round of payments, approved by a narrow vote in Congress in early March 2021. Each of these checks is worth $1,400, for both American adults and their dependents within certain income constraints.

More than four months after the initial legislation was passed, the IRS continues to send out millions of these stimulus payments each week, in addition to the agencys other responsibilities. As it sends the stimulus payments, the IRS has also been tasked with sending out the first of six Child Tax Credit advance payments to roughly 36 million American families. These two payments are in addition to the agencys normal job of processing tax returns from the most recent round of filing in May 2021 although most returns have been processed by now, 35 million remain, creating a backlog and delaying the IRSs other functions.

With all of this happening at the IRS, it would be understandable if a few stimulus checks fell through the cracks. Therefore, if someone has not received theirs, it might simply be that the IRS has not been able to send it out yet.

If worst comes to worst, though, and the check has simply vanished somewhere along the line, dont panic for those who were unable to claim the check during this year, it can be claimed as a recovery rebate credit when filing next years taxes.

What To Do About Payment Scams

Though it’s uncommon, you may believe you’ve been scammed out of your payment or had it stolen. The Federal Trade Commission has a website where you can report a stolen stimulus check. If you’re worried about theft, you can sign up for a free USPS service that will send you a picture of every piece of mail coming your way — including your stimulus payment.

How Much Money Will I Get

How To Know If I Qualify For Stimulus Check 2021
  • Adults whose adjusted gross income is less than $75,000/year will get $1,400 for each adult, plus $1,400 for each dependent no matter how old they are. This applies to heads of households who make less than $112,500, as well.
  • The IRS will use income information from your 2020 tax return if they received that return before sending your money. Otherwise they will use information from your 2019 tax return.
  • If the IRS sends your payment based on a 2019 return and then your 2020 return says you qualify for more , they will send an additional payment to make up for the difference. To get the additional payment, you must file the 2020 tax return by 90 days from the filing deadline or September 1, 2021, whichever is earlier.

The Payments Are Still Rolling Out So Dont Worry

If you havent gotten your third stimulus check yet, dont worry. While the majority of third stimulus check payments have gone out to the people who are owed them, the IRS has until the very last day of 2021 December 31 to send out all of the third checks.

And they are still sending out checks regularly. The most recent payment batch went out on April 21, to over 2 million Americans, in a combined form of direct deposit and paper checks, alongside 700,000 plus-up payments, which are being sent out weekly, per the IRS and other publications.

That way, if the IRS doesnt have someones full information on file, or if you made a mistake while filing your tax returns, they have the time to square away all of the relevant information and send it out to you at the correct amount you owe.

  • In some instances, the IRS offsets a portion of the payment sent to a spouse who filed an injured spouse claim if it has been offset by the non-injured spouses past-due child support. The FAQ on the IRS stimulus FAQ www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payment-information-center website states: The IRS is aware that in some instances a portion of the payment sent to a spouse who filed an injured spouse claim with his or her 2019 tax return has been offset by the non-injured spouses past-due child support. The IRS is working with the Bureau of the Fiscal Service and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Child Support Enforcement, to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. If you filed an injured spouse claim with your return and are impacted by this issue, you do not need to take any action. The injured spouse will receive their unpaid half of the total payment when the issue is resolved.

2. Complete the form answering all refund questions as they relate to your payment.

3. When completing item 7 under Section 1:

What To Do If You Have Not Received Any Of The 3 Stimulus Checks While Eligible For Payments

2nd stimulus check update: If you didnt get payment, you can now Free ...

Americans who have not received stimulus payments under the three laws passed in Congress are most likely low-income non-filers and will have to do additional paperwork with the IRS.

If you are one of the Americans who have not yet received any of the three stimulus checks distributed by the federal government through the Internal Revenue Service while you were eligible, you are most likely among the low-income people for whom the agency does not have information to process the payment.

Many of the cases of beneficiaries who have not yet received coronavirus stimulus checks are low-income individuals who are not required to file IRS tax returns. This means that the agency does not have the information on file to process the so-called Economic Impact Payments for this population.

The agency has recommended in these instances that individuals file a tax return as soon as possible even if they are not required to do so and claim the amount or amounts owed for stimulus checks through a Refund Recovery Credit.

In cases where the IRS provided an underpayment or without the extra dependent credits, taxpayers can also claim this money through the referred credit on the return this year.

In fact, the IRS reported this week that it is processing payments applicable to tax returns of individuals who filed their tax information this season for the first time because of the above reason.

What If You Got An Irs Letter In The Mail But No Payment

About 15 days after the IRS sends your third stimulus check , you should get a letter from the agency confirming your payment. The IRS is still sending these letters for the third payment.

If you received this letter — also called Notice 1444, Your Economic Impact Payment — but you never got your payment, you’ll need to request a payment trace. Make sure you keep the letter because you’ll need the information to file your claim. The same is true for the first and second stimulus checks as well.

Why Did We Get Only Half The Amount

Many couples are finding that they are getting direct deposits for only a portion of what they think their stimulus payment should be. Some have gotten half of their payment deposited one week and half the next, and other couples are finding that their dependents’ share of the stimulus money is split between the two parents.

The IRS has explained that the first payment made might be based on a taxpayer’s 2019 tax return, and the second payment is a “plus-up” payment that is based on the taxpayer’s 2020 tax return.

The IRS has also said that part of the problem may be with “injured spouse” claims on a tax return. of only one spouse, the “injured” spouse can request a refund.) The IRS says that these couples will get their payments as two separate payments.

If you haven’t received the full amount, wait until you get your Notice 1444, Your Economic Impact Payment, from the IRS. That letter should have the correct amount of your stimulus payment. If you don’t receive deposits or checks in that amount, you may have to file a Recovery Rebate Credit . You can also read the IRS’s press release from April 1, which contains a lot of helpful details.

Most families received $1,400 per person from the third stimulus check, which included all dependents declared on their tax return. A single person with no dependents would typically earn $1,400, while a family of four would receive $5,600.

If you never received the third stimulus check, you can use the Internal Revenue Service’s “Get My Payment” tool, which is only available on IRS.gov and is available in English and Spanish. It updates once a day, generally throughout the course of the night.

Furthermore, if you’re concerned about the status of your third stimulus payment, you can use “track your payment” to get a tax refund for the amount owing to you.

How Can You Correct Mistakes

Third Stimulus Checks: When and How Will You Get $1,400?

The IRS sends out Notice 1444 by mail within 15 days of making a direct deposit or sending a paper check. That letter will tell you the amount of your stimulus payment and how it was made. The letter also provides instructions on fixing issues with your payment.

Don’t Respond to Telephone Calls or Texts About Your Stimulus Check

The IRS will not call, text, or email you about your stimulus payment. The Federal Trade Commission is warning that thieves are posing as government employees to prey on stimulus payment recipients. These scammers may ask for your personal information or threaten you that if you don’t send the money back in the form of money transfers or gift cards, you’ll lose your drivers’ license. Ignore these communications.

What To Do If You Never Received The Third Payment

The IRS encourages residents to double check their bank accounts first to make sure they never got the third payment, especially in early spring and summer of 2021.

People can also access their IRS Online Account to view the total amount of the third-round Economic Impact Payment issued to them. For married couples filing jointly, each person will need to log into their own online account.

Once people confirm they never got the payment, and their IRS online accounts show a payment amount greater than $0, or if they got a Notice 1444-C or Letter 6475, they should contact the IRS as soon as possible to see if a payment trace is needed.

But they do not need to wait until their trace is complete to file their 2021 tax return, officials said.

When completing the Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet, taxpayers have two options: either use the amount on the Letter 6475 to calculate the recovery rebate credit amount on line 30, or use the amount of stimulus payment the taxpayer believes they received to calculate the rebate credit amount on line 30.

Those who contact the IRS to trace the stimulus payment amount will receive notification of the results. If it is found that the taxpayer didnt get the money, the IRS will adjust the recovery rebate credit amount on the tax return and issue any refund.
