Your first stop: the IRS helpful online tool.

Heres What You Need To Know: Many people may not be aware, but U.S. taxpayers can actually speak to a live human regarding their missing stimulus checks.

With the disbursement of the latest much-anticipated sixth batch of coronavirusstimulus checks to two million more Americans, the Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department have sent out a total of one hundred sixty-one million payments worth more than $379 billion.

To date, the figures represent more than 85 percent of the $450 billion total earmarked for stimulus fundsbut know that despite this achievement, there appears to be thousands of Americans who are still struggling to get their hands on the stimulus cash.

There is, however, good news that may lower some anxiety levels. For those who are missing one or more stimulus check payments, there is still time to claim the money due from the government.

Be aware, though, that the deadline is fast approachingand will close on the extended Tax Day of May 17.

For weeks, the government has been urging Americans who do not receive federal benefits or typically file tax returns to submit one this year in order to provide their necessary payment information to receive the cash.

If you didnt get any payments or got less than the full amounts, you may qualify for the Recovery Rebate Credit and must file a 2020 tax return to claim the credit even if you dont normally file, states the IRS website.

What Information Do I Need About My Stimulus Checks When I File My Taxes

When you received each of your stimulus checks, also known as an Economic Impact Payment, you should have received a Notice 1444. The notice has information about your stimulus check and should be kept with your important tax records like your W-2s or 1099s.

It is possible you received more than one Notice 1444 if you received more than one stimulus check payment. For the first stimulus check you should have received a Notice 1444 and for the second stimulus check you should have received a Notice 1444-B.

When you sit down to file your taxes, these Notice 1444s will be especially helpful if you were eligible, but didnt receive the first or second stimulus check or received only a portion of it. The notice includes information like the amount you were issued before any offsets in 2020, which you will need to claim the recovery rebate credit to get any additional stimulus dollars you are owed from the first and second stimulus.

For tax year 2021, you should have received a Letter 6475. This letter will have the total amount of your stimulus payment in 2021 . If you didnt get the full third stimulus amount you were eligible for, then you may be able to claim those dollars through the recovery rebate credit on your 2021 tax return.

This may seem complicated, but dont worry. TurboTax will guide you through claiming the recovery rebate.

Who Will Get A Debit Card In The Mail

Taxpayers who included their addresses but no bank account data will receive a debit card. Others who will receive a debt card include:

  • People who filed paper returns
  • Those who owed taxes from their 2020 returns

  • People who received an advance payment from their tax service provider, or who paid their tax preparer fees using their tax refund.

What To Do About A Missing Or Stolen Eip Debit Card

Will people on Social Security get a stimulus check?

At least 5 million people will receive their third stimulus check on a prepaid debit card called the Economic Impact Payment Card, instead of a paper check. For the third payment, the EIP card arrives in a white envelope sent from “Economic Impact Payment Card.” The letter will have a US Department of the Treasury seal.

The card has the Visa name on the front and the issuing bank, MetaBank®, N.A., on the back. Information included with the EIP Card explains that this is your Economic Impact Payment. If you receive an EIP Card, visit EIPcard.com for more information.

If you’ve misplaced or thrown away your card, the EIP card service has an FAQ on what to do if your card is lost or stolen. You can also call 800-240-8100 to request a replacement. It’s free, according to a spokesperson for the Treasury Department. To request a new card, press option 2 when prompted.

However, the EIP card website says, “Your Card will be deactivated to prevent anyone from using it and a new replacement Card will be ordered. Fees may apply.” We recommend calling the above number for a lost or stolen card and speaking to a representative. If you may have lost or thrown away a paper check, read the mail fraud section below.

When Will You Receive Your Payment

According to the California Franchise Tax Board website, eligible Californians will receive their payment via direct deposit issued to their bank accounts or via a debit card sent in the mail.

Direct deposit payments are expected to be issued to bank accounts during these windows: Oct. 7, 2022 – Oct. 25, 2022 and Oct. 28, 2022 – Nov. 14, 2022.

State officials said they expect about 90% of direct deposits to be issued in the month of October 2022.

Debit cards are expected to be mailed between Oct. 25, 2022 – Dec. 10, 2022, with the rest receiving the card by Jan. 15, 2023.

State officials said they expect about 95% of all payments – direct deposit and debit cards combined – to be issued by the end of this year.

So who will get paid by direct deposit, and who will receive a debit card?

Generally, direct deposit payments will be made to eligible taxpayers who e-filed their 2020 CA tax return and received their CA tax refund by direct deposit. The remaining eligible taxpayers will receive their payments in the form of a debit card, according to the California Franchise Tax Board website.

You will receive your payment by mail in the form of a debit card if you:

There’s A Glitch With Your Bank Tax Prep Software Or The Irs

This explanation may be the most frustrating of all for people wondering where the heck their stimulus checks are. But a mistake made by your bank, the IRS, or the tax-prep software you used to file returns could screw up your stimulus payment.

As the Washington Post reported, the stimulus payments for millions of taxpayers may be delayed because of a glitch with tax-prep software firms, such as TurboTax, H& R Block, and Jackson Hewitt. The IRS might not have direct deposit information for you if you used one of these services and received an advance on your tax refund, or if you paid for the service by deducting the fee from your tax refund. And if the IRS doesn’t have your direct deposit info, your stimulus check will be delayed. If you think this situation applies to you, use the IRS Get My Payment app to provide the agency with your direct deposit details.

When Will I Get The Recovery Rebate Credit

You will most likely get the Recovery Rebate Credit as part of your tax refunds. If you electronically file your tax return, you will likely receive your refund within 3 weeks. If you mail your return, it can take at least 8 weeks to receive your refund.

Claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit will not delay your tax refund. However, if you dont claim the correct amount of the Recovery Rebate Credit, your refund may be delayed while the IRS corrects the error on your return. The IRS will send you a notice of any changes made to your return.

You can check on the status of your refund using the IRS Check My Refund Status tool.

Third Stimulus Checks: When and How Will You Get $1,400?

As was the case with the first and second check, if you filed a 2018, 2019 or 2020 tax return or receive government benefits, the IRS should automatically send your third check without you having to do anything.

If, however, you’re a nonfiler, a US citizen or permanent resident, had a gross income in 2019 under $12,200 — or $24,400 as a married couple — and didn’t file a return for 2018 or 2019, you may need to give the IRS a bit of information before it can process your payment. Since the IRS’ Non-Filers tool is now closed, you may need to file for that money on a 2021 tax return in the form of a recovery rebate credit, described above.

Here’s more information about who should file an amended tax form and who shouldn’t.

Will The Payments Cause Inflation

California is not the only state to deploy one-time rebates amid budget surpluses. Florida, for example, is sending $450 to certain families with kids.

A big question prompted by the checks sent by California and other states is whether they will exacerbate inflation.

While California “on net will come out ahead,” it may be impacted as other states export inflation with their refunds, Harvard University economics professor Jason Furman recently tweeted.

“Californians are going to come out behind from any ‘inflation relief payments’ made by Florida and other states,” he wrote.

States are sitting on record surpluses and many individuals are struggling under the weight of extremely high inflation.Jared Walczakvice president of state projects at the Tax Foundation

While states have been deploying one-time payments all year, there has been an uptick as Election Day approaches, noted Jared Walczak, vice president of state projects at the Tax Foundation.

“States are sitting on record surpluses and many individuals are struggling under the weight of extremely high inflation,” Walczak said.

That’s prompting policy makers to put the two together and want to write checks.

“Unfortunately, that’s only fueling further inflation by injecting more money in an overheated economy,” Walczak said.

How To Check Your Refund Status

What To Do If There’s A Direct Deposit Issue

The IRS tracking tool for the third stimulus check doesn’t allow you to add direct deposit information this time unless the IRS can’t deliver your payment. So if you have a problem, what do you do? Your check may have bounced back to the IRS if the agency tried to send your payment to a now-closed bank account or to a temporary prepaid debit card a tax preparer set up for you. If your payment was returned to the IRS, the agency will mail your check to the current address it has on file for you. If that check is returned, then the IRS will let you enter your banking information in the Get My Payment tool, the IRS said.

First, we suggest you call your bank or tax preparer — it never hurts to cover all your bases to confirm that an attempt was made to deposit money into a closed account or debit card.

Unfortunately, you’ll need to wait and monitor the Get My Payment tracker to keep tabs on your check delivery. We also recommend signing up for a free service to track your check to your mailbox.

Note: This post has been updated to reflect how people can still claim the 2021 stimulus payments if they havent received themeven though the standard timeframe for filing 2021 tax returns has passed.

On March 11, 2021, President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan into law, which provided essential financial relief to individuals and families along with COVID-19 relief to states and localities. One component of the package is a third round of stimulus payments. Despite wide news coverage about these payments, many have questions about whos eligible and how to receive them. The third round also has different eligibility rules than the first and second rounds of payments, which were distributed earlier.

Below are ten things to know about the third round of paymentsincluding information on filing your 2021 taxes if you missed any or all of your payment:

Projected Timeline For Sending Third Stimulus Checks

The IRS delivered virtually all of the second round of stimulus checks in less than a month, starting Dec. 29, 2020, two days after then-President Donald Trump signed the $900 billion bill into law.

Congress gave the IRS until Jan. 15, 2021, to issue the bulk of the 147 million payments so that the agency could quickly pivot to preparing for tax-filing season. After that, taxpayers were instructed to claim any missing stimulus money from the first or second rounds on their 2020 tax returns in the form of a tax credit.

The third round of payments hit at the height of the 2020 tax-filing season, and it was difficult for the IRS to ship all of the stimulus checks in less than a month and process millions of returns at the same time. To give itself some breathing room, the IRS moved the deadline for filing and paying federal income taxes to May 17.

The third stimulus payments are being rolled out in tranches, or groups, by direct deposit and through the mail as a check or debit card. The vast majority of all economic impact payments will be issued by direct deposit, the IRS says, and it will continue to send batches of EIPs every week.

The IRS, via the Treasury, sent the first tranche of payments on March 12, a total of 90 million payments worth about $242 billion. Most of these payments went to people who had filed 2019 or 2020 federal income taxes, or who had used the online IRS Non-Filers Tool.

How Much Money Will I Receive

Payments for eligible couples who file jointly may range from $400 to $1,050.

Qualifying individuals may receive $200 to $700.

The amount of the checks depends on two factors: income and number of dependents.

The most generous sums $1,050 may go to married couples who file jointly with $150,000 or less in income and a dependent. A couple in that income category will receive $700 if they have no dependents.

Individual taxpayers with $75,000 or less in income may receive $700 if they have a dependent and $350 if they do not.

The payments are gradually phased out for those with up to $500,00 in income, for married couples, and $250,000, for individuals. California residents with incomes above those thresholds will not receive a stimulus payment.

The income is based on your California adjusted gross income, which can be found on line 17 on the 2020 Form 540 or line 16 on the 2020 Form 540 2EZ.

An online tool can help estimate your payment amount.

Havent Received Your Third Stimulus Payment Yet

The IRS will continue to send checks via the Treasury. The majority who have received a first or second payment dont need to do anything more to get the third payment, which often will be sent out automatically. Following the model of the second round of checks, payments should be issued automatically to people who:

  • Filed 2019 or 2020 federal tax returns. The IRS will use the taxpayers latest processed return.
  • Registered for the first round of stimulus payments through the non-filer portal on IRS.gov by Nov. 21, 2020.
  • Receive Social Security , Supplemental Security Income , or Railroad Retirement Board or Veterans Affairs benefits.

Those receiving Social Security and other federal benefits will generally receive this third payment the same way as their regular benefits.

The IRS Get My Payment Tool allows you to provide information to the agency for a stimulus check and to track payment status.

If you got your payment based on your 2019 return and find that youre entitled to more based on your 2020 return, the IRS will compute the additional amount owed to you.
