Fourth Stimulus Check Update: How To Get Another $1400 Direct Payment

Some Americans will be eligible for a $1,400 stimulus check this year even if Congress doesn’t pass any legislation for another round of checks.

Republicans and Democrats fought hard over the issue of stimulus checks after passing the first round in 2020, so most Americans have already received all the money they’re likely to get. However, some Americans will be able to claim additional payments when they file their taxes and they could be eligible for the full $1,400 payment.

One way Americans could be eligible for a full $1,400 payment is if they had a child in 2021. Why? Because the 2021 Economic Impact Payments were based on a person’s 2020 or 2019 return. So, any eligible dependent that came into the family last year wouldn’t have been included in the payment amount.

Those who have a child who qualifies for the Recovery Rebate Credit can claim the dependent when they file their 2021 tax return this year. To be eligible, the child must be under 19 at the end of the year unless they’re a student and a child, brother, sister, foster child, stepsibling, half-brother or half-sister or a descendant of any of them.

Unlike the first two rounds of payments, which limited dependent eligibility to just children, the third stimulus check made accommodations for dependents of all ages. So, a person who adds a parent or grandparent or another eligible dependent to their household could also be eligible for a $1,400 payment.

Another Stimulus Check Could Help Fight Inflation But A Fourth Is Unlikely Experts Say

    Story at a glance

    • Some experts think Americans could greatly benefit from a cash infusion issued by the federal government to cope with rising inflation.
    • Three economic impact payments were sent to all Americans under two administrations, alongside an expansion of the child tax credit and expanded unemployment benefits.
    • All those programs have expired, and the Biden administration has been unable to get any of them extended on a permanent basis.

Even though pandemic relief measures like stimulus checks and child tax credits have expired, some policy experts believe another cash infusion could help many Americans and be politically advantageous coming as inflation skyrockets the cost of gas, groceries and more everyday essentials.

The federal government has issued three economic impact payments, or stimulus checks, since the coronavirus pandemic began. The last check for $1,400 was sent to Americans in March 2021. That money was a relief for many, keeping nearly 11 million people out of poverty across two administrations, data from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services shows.

The most impactful programs for alleviating poverty were economic impact payments under the ARP and unemployment compensation, said the HHS report.

Magg doesnt believe another stimulus check is likely, and while the Biden administration works with Congress to come up with a legislative solution, the Labor Department announced inflation has hit nearly 8 percent over the last year.

New ‘stimulus Check’ Starts In July: $3600 ‘checks’ Coming Soon

The first payments of funds from the expanded child tax credit will arrive in July, IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig said in Congressional testimony in mid-April.

The $1,400 one-time stimulus checks that were mandated as part of the American Rescue Plan have been going out over the course of the last few weeks, with the latest round delivering about 2 million checks.

There is a movement to push through another payment, possibly through a separate package that would have to pass through Congress. But in the meantime, more checks are on the way for some Americans, also as part of the American Rescue Plan.

The first payments of funds from the expanded child tax credit will arrive in July, IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig said in Congressional testimony in mid-April.

We will launch by July 1 with the absolute best product we are able to put together, Rettig told the Senate Finance Committee. There had been some speculation, including some based on things Rettig had said, that the IRS, which does not have much experience with sending out recurring payments, would not have the infrastructure in place to get the payments out in time.

The IRS will set up a new online portal that will allow taxpayers to, among other things, update when they have had a new child.

American families will be eligible to receive up to $3,600 per year for each child under the age of six and up to $3,000 annually for each child between six and 17.

Child Or Dependent Qualification For The $500 Payment

Several readers have asked questions around the $500 child dependent additional stimulus payment. To get this payment you must have filed a 2018 or 2019 tax return and claimed the child as dependent ANDthe child must be younger than 17-years-old at the end of 2020. They must also be related to you by blood, marriage, or adoption . There is no limit to the number of dependents who can qualify for the additional $500 in one household.

This age limit is much younger than what is used by the IRS in the qualifying child test where a child must be younger than 19 years old or be a student younger than 24 years old as of the end of the calendar year. Hence the confusion being caused by this. So just remember if your child or eligible dependent is 17 or over you cannot claim the stimulus payment for them.

College Kids and High School Seniors

The younger than 17 yr old requirement has ruled out several thousand college students and high school kids who are older than 17, but still being claimed as a dependent by their parents on their federal tax return.

However if you are a college student AND filed a recent tax return you can qualify for a standard/adult stimulus check per the above eligibility rules. But note as soon as you file a return you cannot be claimed as a dependent by others, which means they lose certain other tax benefits and credits.

Th Stimulus Checks Given Out To Teachers

For other states, their fourth stimulus checks are taking on a new lookas teacher bonuses! Its no secret that teachers are the unsung heroes of our communities, and theyve been put through the wringer during the pandemic. To show them the appreciation that they more than deserve, some states are giving teachers a fourth stimulus.

    • Florida

In Florida, teachers will be getting a $1,000 bonusalthough some of the details of who qualifies are up in the air. If youre a teacher in the Sunshine State, check with your district to see if you can get in on this.15

    • Georgia

Georgia is extending the $1,000 bonus to both full-time teachers and administrators. Part-time teachers will still score a bonus of $500, and theres even a plan in place to give a bonus to pre-K teachers.16

    • Michigan

Earlier in 2021, Michigan used a grant to pay bonuses of $500 to its teachers and $250 to school support staff. No word yet on whether theyll give out another bonus, though.17

    • Tennessee

Our very own Tennessee is giving full-time teachers $1,000 and part-time teachers $500 to thank them for their hard work.18

    • Texas

Now, nothing has happened statewide yet, but some districts in the Lone Star State are giving out their own bonuses. Districts are gifting things like 24% raises, a $500 bonus, and even a $2,000 incentive for some teachers to return to the classroom.19

When Will A Second Stimulus Check Be Issued

The government began sending direct deposit payments on December 28, 2020. Paper checks were sent out starting on December 30, 2020.

    Payments are automatically sent to:

    • Eligible individuals who filed a 2019 tax return.
    • Social Security recipients, including Social Security Disability Insurance , railroad retirees, and Supplemental Security and Veteran Affairs beneficiaries.
    • Individuals who successfully registered for the first stimulus check online using the IRS Non-Filers tool or who submitted a simplified tax return that has been processed by the IRS

There is no action that you have to take to get your second stimulus check. People who provided their banking information with the IRS shouldve received their stimulus checks by direct deposit. Social Security and Veterans Affairs beneficiaries who received the first payment via Direct Express shouldve received the second payment the same way.

The IRS sent paper checks or prepaid debit cards to people who did not provide their banking information. Mailed payments may be delivered in a different format than the first stimulus check.

All second stimulus checks were issued by January 15, 2021. If you didnt get a second stimulus check by then , you can claim your second stimulus check as the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit on your 2020 tax return or use if you dont have a filing requirement.
