What Can The Irs Do For A Missing Stimulus Check

How to Get Your $1,400 Stimulus Check

The IRS will do the following to process your claim, according to its website:

  • If you didn’t cash the check, the IRS will issue a replacement. If you discover the original check among your belongings, you’re expected to return it as soon as possible.
  • If you did cash or deposit the check, expect a claim package from the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, which will include a copy of the cashed check. Follow the included instructions. The bureau will review your claim and the signature on the canceled check before deciding whether it will issue a replacement. This is presumably to guard against stimulus check fraud.

Why You May Not Have Gotten All Your Stimmy Money

The third-round stimulus payments, authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 and signed into law on March 11, 2021, were sent from March through December last year. Round 3 of the so-called stimmies provided a maximum credit of $1,400 per person, including all qualifying dependents claimed on a tax return.

A married couple with two qualifying dependents, for example, are eligible to receive a maximum credit of $5,600, depending on income limits. And if you brought a baby into the world last year, youll be able to file for up to $1,400 that youre owed for your new family member if you claim the child as a dependent.

The size of the credit, however, gets reduced for single filers with adjusted gross income of more than $75,000 and for married couples filing jointly with earnings of more than $150,000. For heads of household, the credit is reduced between $120,000 and $112,500.

The credit disappears entirely for individuals with AGI above $80,000 and for married couples filing jointly who earn more than $160,000. Heads of household with incomes of more than $120,000 also dont get the stimulus check. Most eligible Americans have already received the payments, according to the IRS.

The Last Of The $1400 Stimulus Checks Will Get Distributed To Eligible Parents This Tax Season

The third round of stimulus checks went out to more than 169 million U.S. taxpayers last year. The consensus on Capitol Hill remains that the $1,400 stimulus checksthe largest payment of the three roundswill be the last of the COVID-19 direct payments.

That said, the IRS hasnt finished sending out that third round: Another $1,400 stimulus checks will go out to eligible parents and guardians of 2021 newborns once the 2021 tax returns are filed this year. Thats because when the IRS sent out the $1,400 checks last year, it used taxpayers last tax return on filewhich, of course, wouldnt have included any children born in 2021. Thats why the check will get applied to parents and guardians 2021 tax returns, according to reporting by Fortune and Insider.

But having a 2021 newborn alone wont score parents and guardians that additional check. They will also need to meet the income eligibility requirements. To get the payment, single filers would need to make no more than $75,000 per year in adjusted gross income, while couples filing jointly would need to stay below $150,000. Parents earning above those levels would see their checks reducedand be completely phased out if theyre a single filer earning above $80,000 or a couple filing jointly earning above $160,000.

Could There Be Any Penalties For Submitting A Tax Return Late

It is worth mentioning that taxpayers could claim the payment when filing their tax return for the fiscal year 2021. However, this years tax season ended on April 18, and the extension expired on October 17.

You may still be able to get the money if you claim the credit by filing your return after those dates however, since both deadlines have passed, the amount you are eligible for would be reduced by penalties, and your refund would be less than expected.

On the other hand, people who are generally not required to file their tax return due to their income still have until November 15 of this year to apply for the credit, as well as the third stimulus check, using the GetCTC.org tool.

How many people have yet to claim the benefit?

According to the US Government Accountability Office, there are anywhere between nine and ten million people who would be eligible to receive these funds but have yet to claim them.

This Tax Season Is Your Last Chance To Get Your $1400 Stimulus Check

This tax season is that last chance filers have to get any stimulus money they may be missing from the third round of payments that was disbursed to most people last year.

If you haven’t gotten your $1,400 payment for yourself or your dependents or got less than you qualify for you will need to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your tax return. This is the final opportunity you will have to get your 2021 stimulus money, unless you file an amended 2021 tax return later on.

Most people have received all of the stimulus money they are eligible for, according to the IRS. But there are a few reasons you may be able to claim the credit:

  • You had a child in 2021.
  • You added a new dependent, such as a parent, grandparent or niece, in 2021.
  • You didn’t receive a stimulus payment at all but are eligible.
  • Again, you must meet the income eligibility requirements in order to receive the money for yourself or your dependents.

Let’s say you’re a single filer who had an adjusted gross income of $80,000 in 2020. Technically, you would not have qualified for a stimulus check at all. But if your AGI fell to $75,000 in 2021, then you’d be able to claim the full $1,400.

Alternatively, if your AGI was $80,000 in 2021, contributing $5,000 to a traditional IRA which you can still do for 2021 would lower your taxable income enough to reach the $75,000 AGI eligibility limit for the full stimulus payment. You would need to do that before filing your 2021 tax return to reap the benefits.

The amount of the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit will reduce the amount of tax owed for 2021, or, if it’s more than the tax owed, it will be included as part of the individual’s 2021 tax refund. Individuals will receive their 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit included in their refund after the 2021 tax return is processed. The 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit will not be issued separately from the tax refund.

To avoid processing delays, the IRS urges people to file a complete and accurate tax return. Filing electronically allows tax software to figure credits and deductions, including the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. The 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet on Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR instructions can also help.

The fastest and most secure way for eligible individuals to get their 2021 tax refund that will include their allowable 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit is by filing electronically and choosing direct deposit.

Anyone with income of $73,000 or less, including those who don’t have a tax return filing requirement, can file their federal tax return electronically for free through the IRS Free File program. The fastest and most secure way to get a tax refund is to file electronically and have it direct deposited contactless and free into the individual’s financial account. Bank accounts, many prepaid debit cards, and several mobile apps can be used for direct deposit when taxpayers provide a routing and account number.

Getting A Missing Check Can Be Difficult But Worth The Trouble

by Adam Shell, AARP, February 4, 2022

Nobody wants to leave money on the table, especially a stimulus payment from the U.S. government that theyre eligible for but didnt receive. In late January the Internal Revenue Service announced that all third-round stimulus checks had been sent. But the IRS also noted that not all eligible Americans received the full amount theyre entitled to.

The good news? Theres still time to get whats owed to you.

Uncle Sam which issued 175 million third-round payments, totaling over $400 billion, through the end of 2021 reminded people that they can claim any remaining stimulus money theyre entitled to but didnt get by claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 income tax return.

The rebate, which comes as a tax credit of up to $1,400 per eligible person on your 2021 return, will either lower the amount of tax you owe or boost the size of your refund. The golden prize of a tax return is a tax credit, says Mark Steber, chief tax information officer at Jackson Hewitt, a tax preparation service. The Recovery Rebate Credit is a dollar-for-dollar tax-liability offset.

Use The Irs Get My Payment Tool To Track Stimulus Money

For the third stimulus check: It’s worth visiting the IRS’ online portal designed to track the status of your 2021 payment. Generally, it should tell you when your check will be processed and how you’ll receive it: for example, as a paper check in the mail. If the Get My Payment tool doesn’t give you information you can understand or says your check is on the way and you haven’t received it, you may need to eventually request a payment trace or file for a recovery rebate credit.

For the first or second payment: If you can’t find the letter sent by the IRS, you’ll need to create an online profile with the IRS to see your status. For any problems, you may need to issue a payment trace or file for a recovery rebate credit, even if you don’t normally submit a tax return. Here’s more information about finding the amount of your first and second payments.

If you receive no $1,400 payment or a reduced check, but your income changes, you may be able to claim the money you are due when you file your taxes next year.

“Any change, either a slight reduction in earnings or even just putting more money in a traditional IRA or a 401 could yield a much bigger total payment when they do their 2021 taxes,” said Garrett Watson, senior policy analyst at the Tax Foundation.

“There’s a subset of folks who will be in that situation,” Watson said.

That also goes for this year’s tax-filing season for people who missed out on the previous $1,200 or $600 payments. You can claim a recovery rebate credit to recoup any money you were possibly owed. This is also available to people who typically do not file tax returns because their income is too low.
