  • late April: the IRS will do a “second run of payments” to Social Security beneficiaries who didn’t file tax returns in 2018 or 2019 but do have direct deposit on file
  • week of May 4: the IRS will start mailing paper checks at a rate of 5 million per week â a process that could last up to 20 weeks

The Irs Has Distributed Three Rounds Of Economic Impact Payments To Date But Not Everyone Has Had The Full Entitlement Heres How To Check How Much You Have Received

During 2020 and 2021 the federal government sent out three rounds of stimulus check payments for eligible households, with a maximum of $3,200 available per person.

Previously it was possible to claim any missing payments using the IRS Get My Payment online portal, but that option has now expired. To request payment of any outstanding stimulus check money you must now claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on your federal tax returns.

If you did not receive the Economic Impact Payments issued in 2020 or 2021, you may be able to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit from #IRS by filing a tax return. Learn more at

  • In some instances, the IRS offsets a portion of the payment sent to a spouse who filed an injured spouse claim if it has been offset by the non-injured spouses past-due child support. The FAQ on the IRS stimulus FAQ www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payment-information-center website states: The IRS is aware that in some instances a portion of the payment sent to a spouse who filed an injured spouse claim with his or her 2019 tax return has been offset by the non-injured spouses past-due child support. The IRS is working with the Bureau of the Fiscal Service and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Child Support Enforcement, to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. If you filed an injured spouse claim with your return and are impacted by this issue, you do not need to take any action. The injured spouse will receive their unpaid half of the total payment when the issue is resolved.

Are My Dependents Eligible With This Check

How to track your stimulus check payment

As a rule, dependents are not eligible for their own checks, but they do contribute to the total your household can receive. In many cases, it can multiple your familys total.

In the third stimulus check, dependents of every age count toward $1,400. If youre a parent of a baby born in 2020, you could be entitled to $1,100 if you never received the first two payments for your new dependent last year. You can also get $1,400 for a baby born in 2021. Note that if your household exceeds the strict income limits, you wont receive any stimulus check money, even if you have dependents.

With the second stimulus check approved in December, each child dependent age 16 and younger added $600 each to the household payment. There was no cap on how many children you could claim a payment. That was an increase in the amount per child from the $500 that was part of the first check approved last March as part of the CARES Act, even as the per-adult maximum decreased from $1,200 per adult to $600 in the December stimulus plan.

The final qualifications for a third stimulus check have been settled.

Citizenship: Does The Irs Consider My Household Mixed

In the $900 billion stimulus package from December, a US citizen and noncitizen spouse were both eligible for a payment as long as they both had Social Security numbers. This has been referred to as a “mixed-status” household when it comes to citizenship. Households with mixed US citizenship were left out of the first check.

The new stimulus bill includes all mixed-status households where just one member has a Social Security number for a third stimulus check. That potentially includes families with citizen children and noncitizen parents.

In the CARES Act from last March, households with a person who wasn’t a US citizen weren’t eligible to receive a stimulus check, even if one spouse and a child were US citizens.

What If I Already Filed My Taxes

An amended return may be needed to claim the credit if IRS records show no payment was issued.

For eligible people who didnt claim a recovery rebate credit on their 2021 tax return , they will need to file a Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return to claim the remaining amount of stimulus money if IRS records dont show that they were issued a payment.

This includes people who think they didnt get the full amount of their third-round Economic Impact Payment because their circumstances in 2021 were different than they were in 2020.

People trying to figure out if they should amend their original tax return can use this online tool.

How To Claim Your Rebate Credit

How to track the status of your stimulus check

To get your money, youll need to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 return. Filing electronically can guide you through the form. Dont claim any missing first or second stimulus payments on your 2021 return rather, youll need to file a 2020 return or an amended return to get these payments.

The rebate credit does not count toward your taxable income. And be aware that youll need to fill out your tax return accurately and include the precise amount of stimulus payments the IRS has actually paid you to avoid a delay in your returns processing. If you enter the incorrect amount, it can hold up the processing of your return, Greene-Lewis cautions. The agency will not automatically calculate your 2021 rebate. It is on you, the taxpayer, to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit, Steber says.

Can I Track My California Inflation Relief Check

The short answer: no. But you can probably narrow down your timeline a bit.

If you filed your taxes online and also received the Golden State Stimulus you may have already gotten your relief. If you dont meet both of those criteria, youre going to have to wait longer.

Remember, debit cards are being dispersed based off order of last names, so if youve been blessed with an A-B-C name, you wont have to wait as long as the X-Y-Z crowd.

And if youve changed your banking info since your 2020 return was filed youre in for a long wait. That group will be the last to get their payment.

What Happens If You Dont Receive Your Payment Or Only Receive A Partial Amount

If you havent received your payment yet, dont panic, although its easier said than done. Compared with the first round of stimulus checks, the IRS and Treasury Department have significantly shrunk the delivery timeline by weeks, if not months. However, the text of the American Relief Plan still gives both agencies until Dec. 31, 2021, to distribute all funds, meaning the last round of checks might not hit consumers mailboxes until January 2022.

Consider signing up for the U.S. Postal Services informed delivery service, so you know in advance of any mail youll be receiving on a given day. If the IRS says it already mailed your check but you didnt receive one, down the road you might also decide to order a stimulus check payment trace. You can arrange one by calling a hotline at the IRS or submitting a completed Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund by mail or fax. But be prepared: This process can take weeks. The IRS may also ask that you sit tight for the time being in some cases, for a period as long as nine weeks.

Can You Get A Recovery Rebate Credit If You Got Your Third Check

In a very specific circumstance, people who receive the third stimulus check may still be able to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their taxes. The amount of money each taxpayer received in their Economic Impact Payment was calculated based on the number of dependents in their household on their 2019 taxes. If the household gained a new dependent by the 2020 tax filing season, the taxpayer would be eligible to receive a plus-up payment. This would bring their original check amount in line with what they wouldve been eligible for if their new dependent had been accounted for initially.

For example, a married couple who had a baby in 2020 may have initially received a $2,800 third stimulus check $1,400 for each spouse. They wouldve become eligible for a plus-up payment of $1,400 due to the 2020 birth of their baby. If they didnt receive a plus-up payment by the end of December 2021, they could claim a $1,400 Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 taxes.

Many Americans didnt receive third stimulus checks. In some cases, it was because they filed their 2020 taxes late. In other cases, the IRS simply didnt get to them in time. Either way, all eligible taxpayers who havent received third stimulus checks can take action by claiming the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 taxes.
