Finding The Amounts Of Your First Second And Third Stimulus Checks

H& R Block confirms mixup in 2nd stimulus payments, causing delays

To find the amount of stimulus payment youve received, you can:

  • Refer to the IRS notices that were mailed to you. IRS Notice 1444shows how much you received from the first stimulus check. IRS Notice 1444-B shows how much you received from the second stimulus check. IRS Notice 1444-C shows how much you received from the third stimulus check.
  • Check your bank statements. If you had your payments direct deposited, you can find the amount of your first, second, and third stimulus check using your bank statements. They should be labeled as IRS TREAS 310 and have a code of either TAXEIP1 , TAXEIP2 , or TAXEIP3 .
  • Request an account transcript. You can request an account transcript sent electronically or by mail using Get Transcript. You can also call the IRS automated phone transcript service at 800-908-9946 or mail in Form 4506-T to have your transcript be sent by mail.
  • Create an account on IRS.gov/account. You can view your stimulus check amounts under the Tax Records tab. If you filed jointly with your spouse, you will only see your half of the stimulus check amounts. Your spouse will need to sign into their own account to see the other half of the stimulus check amounts.

To create an account, you will need:

  • Basic information: full name, email, birthday, Social Security Number or Individual Tax Identification Number , tax filing status, and current address.
  • Stimulus Checks: No Taxable Income Or Address

    Q. Im a single person that has a valid SSN, but I do not file a tax return because I do not have any taxable income. What should I do if I didnt receive any stimulus money?

    A. For the first two rounds of economic impact payments, the taxpayer will need to file a 2020 tax return with the IRS and claim the recovery rebate credit. Eligible taxpayers who did not receive the maximum amount of advance payments and taxpayers who missed receiving the first or second stimulus payments altogether can claim a credit on their tax return for the amount they qualified for but did not receive as an advance payment. For example, a single taxpayer who was eligible for but did not receive either economic impact payment would be eligible to claim a recovery rebate credit in the amount of $1,800 .

If this same eligible taxpayer did not receive the third economic impact payment, they should receive that from the IRS after their 2020 tax return is processed. Once the IRS processes the taxpayers 2020 tax return, the IRS will use the information from the 2020 tax return to determine eligibility for the third round of payments. In this case, if the IRS determines the taxpayer is eligible for the full third economic impact payment and no payment has been made to that taxpayer, the IRS will issue an additional $1,400 to that individual. The FAQs available on this IRS webpage help explain the process someone should follow in this situation to complete their tax return.

How Did The First Two Stimulus Checks Impact Poverty In The United States

New data from the US Census Bureau show that various types of pandemic related assistance helped to keep millions out of poverty. This includes stimulus checks, for which the The Wall Street Journal estimates helped keep 11.7 million people from falling into poverty in 2020.

The aid landscape looks very different today and experts believe that without action, many of these benefits could be lost. With no stimulus check in sight, federal unemployment programs ended, and the eviction moratorium lifted, millions of households find themselves in an extremely precarious economic situation.

Q How Much Was The Second Stimulus Check For

    A. Your second stimulus check depended on your 2019 income. The full amount was $600 per individual, $1,200 per couple, and $600 per qualifying child under the age of 17. For expats to qualify for the full second stimulus check, you must have had $75,000 or less in income if you filed as single, $112,500 or less if you filed as head of household, or $150,000 or less if you filed jointly with your spouse or as a qualifying widow. Youd also then qualify for a $600 payment per qualifying child.

For those above this income level, your stimulus check amount would lower $5 for each $100 your AGI exceeded the above thresholds.

    Q. Did I have to pay back the amount I get?

    A. No.

    Q. Will this affect my 2020 tax return?

    A. It could only help your 2020 return. If you are eligible for more stimulus than you were awarded, you may be able to claim it as a credit on your return that either decreases your tax liability or increases your refund. If youre eligible for less or received the full amount, you dont have to pay it back and it wont affect your return.

    Q. Will I owe tax on this second stimulus check in 2021 or have to pay it back?

    A. No, this is considered a tax credit, not income, so you will not need to pay taxes on it in 2021 or pay it back.

    Q. Im retired overseas and dont file a tax return did I qualify for the second stimulus check?

    Q. What if I didnt have an SSN but filed a U.S. return. Did I get to take advantage of the second stimulus check?

H& R Block Customers Wait For Delayed Stimulus Rebate Checks

We have confirmed with the IRS that they have the accurate banking information from the tax filing for all TurboTax filers, McMahon said in an email. If the taxpayer closed their personal bank account where they received a recent tax refund, the IRS may still try to deposit their stimulus payment there if it is the latest banking information that the IRS has on file for them.

Some H& R Block users, meanwhile, griped that their checks were incorrectly deposited onto Emerald Cards, prepaid debit cards that customers can use to receive their tax refunds, CNBC reported.

But the company says those problems were isolated incidents in a distribution process thats been much smoother than the last one. H& R Block said on Tuesday that all stimulus payments headed to Emerald Cards have been processed.

While there were individuals who had questions or needed a replacement Emerald Card, the systemic issue seen during the second stimulus disbursement was solved and was not an issue this time, an H& R Block spokesperson said.

Those affected by the glitches may have to wait a bit longer to receive the money.

The IRS said any payments sent to closed bank accounts will be returned to the feds and reissued in less than two weeks. Some reissued payments are already on the way, according to the agency.

Why Stimulus Checks Were Delayed Last Time

Millions of people file their taxes through online tax software providers every year. It can be simple, convenient, and more affordable than visiting a CPA .

In an effort to extend that convenience, H& R Block, TurboTax, and a few others allow customers to opt into their refund transfer products. These let the customer pay for the companys services through their tax refund for an additional fee, instead of via credit or debit card. To complete this process, the company sets up a holding account where the IRS can deposit the refund and the company can take its fee before sending the rest of the money to the taxpayers bank account.

During the rollout of the second stimulus check in January, the IRS erroneously sent payments to these holding accounts for many H& R Block and TurboTax customers. In most cases, the money was later redirected to taxpayers others had to claim the credit on their tax returns. H& R Block was able to get the funds to customers within days despite the IRSs mixup.

Jones said H& R Block has worked with the IRS to ensure the payments go to the customers ultimate bank account the account where their refund ends up as quickly as possible this time. The IRS is also labeling the payments as stimulus rather than refund, Jones added, which helps direct the money to the right location.

    By Nicole Schuman

For many Americans, the arrival of a second government stimulus check cant come soon enough. The payments began arriving in eligible citizens bank accounts this week, but not all are available for immediate access, and that has some people very upset.

On Jan. 4, many customers of H& R Block took to social media, frustrated they couldn’t get their stimulus checks. Some customers who utilized the IRS Get My Payment website to inquire about their check saw unfamiliar account numbers associated with the amount. Where Are People Missing Out On Child Tax Credit

Why Are Some Still Waiting For New Stimulus Money?

The vast majority of children were automatically enrolled in the enhanced Child Tax Credit advance payments scheme created by the American Rescue Plan. Paying the credit upfront and at regular intervals was an especially important part of the tax provision to help struggling households have more financial stability by receiving the tax credit.

This feature it was hoped would reduce childhood poverty, which it has with over 3 million children lifted out of poverty. However, different studies estimate that between 2.3 and 4 million children live in households that are at risk of missing out on the monthly payments because they arent required to file a tax return and may have difficulty accessing the online tools designed to make enrolling for the credit easy. The Tax Policy Center provides a handy interactive map to see where in the US families are most at risk.

New Round Of Stimulus Checks For California Residents

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has confirmed that his administration has began making payment as part of the next round of Golden State stimulus checks, which are going out to around two-thirds of residents in total. The $600 direct payments are the result of the $100 billion California Comeback Plan, which was largely funded by a massive $75 billion budgetary surplus from 2020.

So far the first two payments from the expanded Child Tax Credit have been distributed, with another in the process of being sent out currently. Families have reported being able to put food on their tables more reliably and it had staved off the threat of poverty for millions of households.

The programme is currently only funded for a single year, meaning that parents with a child born in 2021 have just a limited window to ensure they sign up for the monthly payments. The IRS has made provisions for children that have been born within the window of the Child Tax Credit rollout, ensuring that those families who need the money will not be left behind through no fault of their own.

Would A Fourth Stimulus Check Be A Good Idea

In response to the underwhelming jobs report released last month, many have called for additional financial stimulus to be introduced to the US economy. One of the most popular methods to do so would be to introduce a fourth round of stimulus checks, in the hope that it would embolden consumers and provide a boost for businesses. However, in this short video from Vox, some leading economists explain why that may not be a good idea…

How much would poverty have increased without federal aid like stimulus checks and unemployment benefits?

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities reports that without key federal aid programs, poverty could have risen to 25%.

Thanks to unemployment programs like the PUEC and PUA and the sending of the first two stimulus checks, poverty fell to the lowest level in more than 40 years to 9.1%.

However, many worry that as these programs end the rate of those living in poverty could increase sharply in the coming months.

Stimulus Payment Deposited Into Bank Account You Dont Recognize Heres What H& R Block Is Saying

Many H& R Block customers have been raising concerns after the Get My Payment tool on the IRS website shows that their stimulus payment was deposited into a bank account they dont recognize.

According to the company, H& R Block customers who used the Refund Transfer option for their 2019 income tax returns could see the stimulus payment sent to a temporary account, one with an account number the customer does not recognize.

The company says it has addressed the problem and the check will be directed to the method of payment the customer chose.

H& R Block sent out a series of tweets explaining the situation:

H& R Block understands stimulus checks are vitally important for millions of Americans. The IRS determines where second stimulus payments were sent, and in some cases, money was sent to a different account than the first stimulus payment last spring.

We processed millions of stimulus payments to customers bank accounts and onto our Emerald Prepaid Mastercard® yesterday, and all direct deposits are on their way.

If the IRS Get My Payment website displays an account number a customer doesnt recognize, H& R Block is ready to help with additional information at 800-HRBLOCK and 1-866-353-1266 for Emerald Card.

    Stimulus Checks: Recently Deceased

    Q. I received a stimulus check for a deceased relative. What do I do?A. It depends when your loved one passed. For the first and second payments, individuals who died before January 1, 2020 are not eligible for payments. Individuals who died in 2020 are not eligible for the third stimulus check while anyone who died after December 31, 2020 may be eligible for the recovery rebate credit on their 2021 tax return.

During 2020, the IRS asked for stimulus checks/payments sent to ineligible deceased persons be returned. If the payment was made to joint filers, then youd only need to return the decedents portion. The IRS outlines instructions for how to return the payment on their website.
