Understanding A Stimulus Check

Stimulus checks being sent out

Stimulus checks have been mailed out to U.S. taxpayers on several occasions. These checks vary in amount according to the taxpayers filing status. Joint taxpayers generally receive twice as much as those filing singly. In some instances, those who had unpaid back taxes saw their stimulus checks automatically applied to their outstanding balance.

Research posted on the National Bureau of Economic Research found that the means of delivery of fiscal stimulus makes a difference to the overall spending patterns of consumers. Implementing fiscal stimulus by sending checks resulted in an increase inconsumer spending activity. However, applying tax credits equal to the amount of money provided in a stimulus check did not result in an equivalent increase in consumer spending activity.

Mailed Paper Checks Or Debit Cards

The form of payment for the third stimulus may be different than the first or second one. Some people who received a paper check last time might receive a prepaid debit card this time, and some people who received a prepaid debit card last time may receive a paper check. The IRS has emphasized the payments are automatic, and they should not contact their financial institutions or the IRS with payment timing questions, unless after the first round processing is complete.

Also note, third stimulus check payments will not be added to an existing debit card that was mailed for the first or second round of stimulus payments. Under the legislation a new card must be issued.

Can My Recovery Rebate Credit Be Garnished

The first and second rounds of stimulus checks authorized in March 2020 and December 2020 were protected from federal and state debt offsets, and even private debt collectors in some cases.

Unfortunately, the same protections dont apply when these payments are claimed as the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 return. Remember, you can only claim the credit if youre missing a stimulus check you qualify for, or you received too little based on your 2020 income and tax situation.

Your stimulus tax credit can be used to offset state or federal debts, like past-due child support . Your credit cannot be used to offset federal taxes you owe for prior years, according to guidance .

Th Stimulus Checks Given Out To Targeted Groups

Some states are digging into that wad of cash the government gave them and giving out the fourth stimulus checks to specific groups of people. The requirements look different for each state, but all seem to have a few things in commonlike falling into certain income levels or going through some kind of hardship.

The Grand Canyon State has a different take when it comes to stimulus checkstheyre giving them out to people who are going back to work. Arizonas Back to Work Program is offering $2,000 to those who got a job after being on unemployment.3 But you have to hold down your new job for at least eight weeks before getting the benefit.

The Golden State is the only one on the list to give out big ol broad-sweeping stimulus checks that look like the ones the federal government gave out. Heres how their numbers break down: Californians making $75,000 or less were sent a one-time check of $600 or $1,200 as part of the Golden State Stimulus I.4 And with the Golden State Stimulus II, they could be eligible for a second stimulus payment anywhere from $500 to $1,100.5 Thats on top of extra money the state paid out through the Young Child Tax Credit to those who have children age 6 or younger.6

These guys decided to shift their focus to giving their stimulus checks to the unemployed. They sent $375 to folks who had gotten at least one unemployment check payment between March 15, 2020, and October 24, 2020.7
