On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. The United States swiftly responded. Individual states put a series of lockdowns in place to slow the spread, and as unemployment climbed, the federal government sprang into action. It passed relief bills that included an Economic Impact Payment better known as a coronavirus stimulus check.

Following the first stimulus payment, demand grew for more direct relief to American families as the pandemic raged on. In December 2020, the U.S. government again took action to provide a second stimulus check.

However, many on the left felt the second check was insufficient, leading numerous Democrats to campaign on providing additional stimulus funds. Voters delivered Democrats control of the White House, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the U.S. Senate.

As a result, shortly after taking office, President Joe Biden signed a bill authorizing a third stimulus check. The American Rescue Plan Act was signed into law on March 11, 2021. The legislation passed on a partisan basis with no Republican support. Its widely expected to be the last direct payment Americans receive.

Will I Receive My Second Stimulus Payment On A Debit Card

The IRS may deposit some stimulus payments on debit cards, including the Turbo® Visa® Debit Card, for taxpayers that chose to receive their refund through that method in tax year 2019. If you received your refund on a Turbo® Visa® Debit Card during your most recent tax filing , here is what you need to know.

If you have access to your debit card, there is nothing more you need to do. If the IRS deposits a stimulus payment onto your debit card, you will be able to immediately use the stimulus funds upon deposit.

If you selected a refund transfer or a debit card when you filed your taxes and a stimulus payment is sent from the IRS to that account, you will receive your stimulus payment without delay or fees into the account you received your tax refund.

If you received a notification that you will be receiving your stimulus payment from the IRS on your debit card and no longer have access to it, you can request a replacement card by either signing in to your Turbo Visa Debit Card account or calling 888-285-4169 and reporting your card lost/stolen. Well waive or refund standard replacement fees so theres no cost to you.

What Can I Do If I Have Not Received My Eip Money By Those Deadlines

If you have not received all or some portion of your Economic Impact Payments by the deadlines above, you will have to file a 2020 tax return and claim these amounts. You claim them on line 30 of the 2020 Form 1040 as a “Recovery Rebate Credit“. This is another name for the EIP stimulus payments. If you did not get all or a portion of the EIP payments in advance, then you can claim them on line 30 of your tax return for 2020.

How A Life Change Affects Your Stimulus Check/payment Eligibility

    SSDI & Stimulus Checks

With the third stimulus check dispersal under way, millions have already received their third stimulus payments. But the more Americans get their checks, the more questions arise specifically about how life changes affect your stimulus payment.

The first, second and now third economic impact payment or stimulus payments can be paid in advance. Your eligibility and amount is based off your most recently filed tax return but what if that information is incorrect?

For example, what if you havent filed taxes yet but got married in July 2020? Or had a baby? What if youre dealing with the aftermath of a divorce or the recent death of a loved one? What if you already received your first and second stimulus checks, but it was for the wrong amount? What if you graduated from college in 2020 and arent a dependent anymore?

For the first and second stimulus payments, if your situation changed, youll claim the rest youre owed through the Recovery Rebate credit on your 2020 return. For the third , youll wait to claim the credit on your 2021 tax return.

The IRS understood the need to get stimulus payments out quickly. As a result, some taxpayers have found differences in the amount they should have received due to tax filing changes and income changes.

Below, well clear things up about who is eligible for a stimulus checks, payment, and the credit and how life changes affect your eligibility.

My Stimulus Payment Went To The Wrong Bank Account

If the Get My Payment tool tells you your check will be direct-deposited, it will also provide the last four digits of the number of the bank account into which your stimulus payment will be deposited. For the initial checks, some individuals saw that their deposit was going to an old bank account, or they even saw bank account numbers that they didn’t recognize. Here’s what to do:

    • If the tool says that your payment was deposited into your bank account but you haven’t seen it yet, your bank may still be processing it.
    • You won’t necessarily get the third check direct deposited, even if the first or second one was direct deposited.
    • If your third stimulus payment is sent to a closed bank account, the bank is required to transfer the money back to the IRS. The IRS will not redeposit it to you or mail you a paper check. Instead, you will have to file your 2021 tax return to claim your “Recovery Rebate Credit.” See below for instructions on claiming the rebate on your tax return.
    • If H& R Block submitted your last tax return and you signed up for a “refund transfer,” the IRS might deposit your stimulus payment with H& R Block . H& R Block should transfer the money to your bank account within 24 hours.
    • Those who submitted their last tax return with Turbo Tax should receive their payments in the same bank accounts through which they received their tax refunds.

Worried you haven’t seen your 2nd stimulus check payment yet? VERIFY gets the facts

    Q. I had a baby in late 2020. Am I eligible for the child stimulus payments?A. If you had a baby in 2020, you are eligible for the $1,400 credit in 2021. This will be paid in an advance third stimulus payment if you filed your 2020 return by the time the payments were issued. For the first and second payments, the spouse claiming the child in 2020 will claim the children and could receive the recovery rebate credit on the 2020 return.

However, for the third payment, divorced parents who alternate claiming their dependents each year, if an advance payment is received by one spouse for the dependent, no additional payment can be made for the same dependent on the other spouses return.

How To Claim A Missing Payment

You may be eligible to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 or 2021 federal tax return if you didn’t get an Economic Impact Payment or got less than the full amount.

It is important to understand that the Economic Impact Payments applied to different tax years. Depending on whether you missed the first, second or third payment, you will need to file either a 2020 or 2021 tax return to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit.

You Filed An Amended Tax Return

It can happen to anyone you forgot a form or a major deduction or you accidentally picked the wrong filing status. If the change to your return is big enough, youll want to file an amended return. The IRS allows anyone who files their tax return electronically to also e-file their amended return, but only for the current year.

If you do file an amended return, youll need to practice patience. The IRS warns that amended returns can take up to 16 weeks to be processed. Before filing an amended return, you may want to wait to receive the tax refund from your original return. The IRS can often correct small errors and adjust your tax refund accordingly. The agency provides an online tool for helping you determine if you should file an amended return.

How Is My Second Stimulus Check Calculated

The IRS relies on your tax return to calculate whether you qualify for the second stimulus check. So your eligibility was based on your 2019 tax returns, which you filed by July 15, 2020.

According to the text released by Congressional leaders, the COVID-19 relief bill notes those with an adjusted gross income over certain limits receive a reduced amount of money, with the checks phasing out entirely at higher incomes.

Your AGI is calculated by subtracting the deductions that you made during the tax year from your gross income .

Heres a quick breakdown of the AGI limits for the $600 stimulus checks:

    • Single filer checks begin to phase out at AGIs above $75,000.
    • Head of household checks start getting phased out at incomes over $112,500.

The IRS reduces stimulus payments by 5% for the total amount that you made over the AGI limit. This means that for every $100 that you make over the limit, your check goes down by $5. At high enough incomes, the checks phase out entirely. So if you earned over $87,000 as an individual taxpayer, $174,000 as a joint filer, or $124,500 as a head of household, you do not get a stimulus payment. The following calculator allows you to calculate your benefit amount:

This second round of stimulus checks is currently half the maximum amount of the first stimulus checks that were included in the CARES Act in March.
