When Did The Second Stimulus Checks Go Out

How Do I Get My Third Stimulus Check

Is a second stimulus check on the way?

You dont need to do anything if:

  • You have filed a tax return for tax year 2019 or 2020.
  • You are a Social Security recipient, including Social Security Disability Insurance , railroad retiree. Or you are a Supplemental Security Insurance and Veterans Affairs beneficiary.
  • You successfully signed up for the first stimulus check online using the IRS Non-Filers tool or submitted a simplified tax return that has been processed by the IRS.

The IRS will automatically send your payment. You can check on the status of your third stimulus check by visiting the IRS Get My Payment tool, available in English and Spanish.

If you are missing your third stimulus check, file your 2020 tax return or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement. By submitting your information to the IRS, you will be signed up and automatically sent the third stimulus check.

Social Security Stimulus Checks Status

The IRS said a large set of payments for those on Social Security retirement, survivor or disability, Supplemental Security Income, and Railroad Retirement Board will start going out Friday. For those who are receiving the payments electronically, they should show up in accounts on April 7. The Get My Payment tool should be updated this weekend to track these payments, according to the IRS.

The agency still does not have a specific date for when Veterans Affairs beneficiaries will get their stimulus payments, but is targeting mid-April. Those on VA benefits still cannot check the Get My Payment tool.

People Who Dont File A Tax Return

Question: What if I dont file a 2019 or 2020 tax return?

Answer: Some people dont file a tax return because their income doesnt reach the filing requirement threshold. If thats the case, the IRS will send a third stimulus check based on whatever information, if any, is available to it. That information potentially could come from the Social Security Administration, Railroad Retirement Board, or Veterans Administration if youre currently receiving benefits from one of those federal agencies. If thats the case, youll generally receive your third stimulus payment the same way that you get your regular benefits. If you supplied the IRS information last year through its online Non-Filers tool or by submitting a special simplified tax return, the tax agency can use that information, too.

Some people who receive a third stimulus check based on information from the SSA, RRB, or VA may still want to file a 2020 tax return even if they arent required to file to get an additional payment for a spouse or dependent.

What About A Third Stimulus Check

That will be up to President-elect Joe Biden to decide and if the final amount of the second stimulus check is just $600, count on Bident to quickly propose a third stimulus check.

Asked if there would be another relief bill that included a third stimulus check, Biden responded: Thats a negotiating issue, but it will, yes it will.

Biden, who pushed for a $1,200 check as part of the COVID-19 Relief Act that President Donald Trump just signed, was not impressed when that number was cut in half on the final version of the bill.

This bill is just the first step, a down payment, in addressing the crises, more than one that were in, Biden said.

Who Is Eligible For The Second Stimulus Check

Eligibility is primarily based on four requirements:

1. Income: The income requirements to receive the full payment are the same as the first stimulus check. There is no minimum income needed to qualify for the payment. Households with adjusted gross income up to $75,000 for individuals will receive the full payment. This stimulus payment starts to phaseout for people with higher earnings. The second stimulus check maximum income limit is lower than the first stimulus check. Single filers who earned more than $87,000 in 2019 are ineligible for the second stimulus check.

View the chart below to compare income requirements for the first and second stimulus checks.

Income to Receive Full Stimulus Payment First Stimulus Check Maximum Income Limit Second Stimulus Check Maximum Income Limit
Single Filer
$136,500 $124,500

2. Social Security Number: This requirement differs from the original eligibility for the first stimulus check. Originally under the first stimulus check, if you were married filing jointly, both spouses needed valid Social Security numbers . If one spouse had an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number , then both spouses were ineligible for the stimulus check. For married military couples, the spouse with an SSN could still get the stimulus check for themselves but not the other spouse with an ITIN.

Will There Be More Stimulus Checks In The Future

Second round of Golden State Stimulus payments go out Friday

As things currently stand, a fourth federal stimulus round appears to be unlikely.

Currently, Mr Bidens Build Back Better Agenda does not include stimulus payments.

And last May, White House secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that the stimulus checks were not free and that another round wasnt in Bidens plans.

Along with getting Biden on board, two corporate Democrats Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema would need to get convinced as well.

This is unlikely because the US is dealing with high inflation, as there is huge consumer demand that the supply is not meeting.

Stimulus checks serve the purpose of giving taxpayers a financial boost during an economic downturn.

And that isnt happening at the moment.

But there has been some mounting pressure to do so.

In fact, 50 Democratic members of the House of Representatives wrote a letter suggesting recurring direct checks, also known as universal basic income.

It read: Another one-time round of checks would provide a temporary lifeline, but when that money runs out, families will once again struggle to pay for basic necessities.

One more check is not enough during this public health and economic crisis.

It was backed by US Representative for New York Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Minnesotas Ilhan Omar.

Democrats have backed a figure of $2,000, although there arent currently any official bills debating a fourth round of checks.

Its also important to note that stimulus checks have been quite popular among the American people.

Who Qualifies For The Third Stimulus Payments

Generally, if youâre a U.S. citizen and not a dependent of another taxpayer, you qualify for the full third stimulus payment. In addition, your adjusted gross income canât exceed:

  • $150,000 for married filing jointly
  • $112,500 for heads of household
  • $75,000 for single filers

A partial payment may be available if your income exceeds the thresholds. However, you will not receive any payment if your AGI is at least:

  • $160,000 for married filing jointly
  • $120,000 for heads of household
  • $80,000 for single filers

The full amount of the third stimulus payment is $1,400 per person and an additional $1,400 for each qualifying dependent.

Second Round Of Direct Payments: December 2020

The second round of aid, a $900 billion package which was part of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 was signed off by Trump on 27 December 2020. It provided a one-off check of up to $600, but this time, households were also able to claim an additional $600 for child dependents aged 16 or under. Those who earned under $75,000 in the 2019 tax year received the full stimulus check, while a steadily smaller figure was given to those on a higher annual income, up to a maximum phase-out limit of $87,000. The first payments, through direct deposit and paper checks with some later payments made by EIP 2 Cards, were issued between 29 December 2020 and 15 January 2021.

Those who didnt receive a stimulus payment either through the CARES Act or the December Covid-19 Relief bill were able to claim for it retroactively when they filed their federal tax returns for 2020 through the IRS Recovery Rebate Credit.

How Much Will My Stimulus Check Be

The amount of your stimulus checks varies depending on your family status and income.

The first stimulus check was worth up to $1,200 per eligible adult and $500 per dependent child under 17. Single adults received as much as $1,200. Married couples with no children got up to $2,400. Married couples with two children received up to $3,400.

If your income exceeds $75,000 as a single filer, $112,500 as a head of household, or $150,000 as a married joint filer, your check amount was reduced at a rate of $5 per extra $100 earned. So if you made $76,000 as a single filer, your check would be reduced by $50.

Eligibility phased out for single filers with incomes above $99,000, heads of household with incomes above $136,500, and married joint filers with incomes above $198,000 for their own payments. However, some still received dependent payments. Married joint filers with two children and $199,000 in income would lose their own $2,400 payments but receive $950 of the $1,000 in dependent payments.

The second check provided $600 per eligible adult and child dependent. The phase-out rules worked the same way. However, because the check was for a smaller amount, eligibility disappeared entirely at a lower income threshold. Singles with incomes above $87,000 received no payment. Nor did heads of household with incomes above $124,500 — unless they received some dependent funds. And married joint filers lost eligibility for their own payments at $174,000.

Who Qualifies For A Refund

Additionally, you must not have been claimed as a dependent by someone else.

Who Gets A Stimulus Check

Under the latest amended bill, a single filer making up to $75,000 will receive the full payment, while those earning up to $80,000 will get a reduced amount. Joint filers making up to $150,000 will get the full $2,800, while those earning up to $160,000 will receive a smaller amount. Previously, the phase-out thresholds were $100,000 for single filers and $200,000 for joint filers in the House version.

Eligibility will be based on your most recent tax return and your adjusted gross income. For the third round of checks, the Internal Revenue Service will use your 2019 or 2020 tax return to determine if you qualify for the direct payment.

Social Security beneficiaries, Disability Insurance beneficiaries, Supplemental Security Income recipients, Railroad Retirement Board beneficiaries, and Veterans Administration beneficiaries all are eligible for the payment even if they didnt file a 2019 or 2020 tax return.

Eligible taxpayers who used the IRS Non-Filer tool for the first round of checks will be treated as providing returns and will also receive payments.

Additionally, Americans who qualify for the stimulus payment and have dependents will get an additional $1,400 per dependent. Now the bonus can be claimed for college students, disabled adults, and other adults who are dependents. Previously, parents or guardians could only claim the bonus for child dependents under 17.

Stimulus Check Schedule: When You Should Get Yours

The IRS started mailing out stimulus checks the week of April 13, sending paper payments to more than 5 million eligible taxpayers. It completed the payments of millions more who had set up direct deposit.

Paper stimulus checks will continue to be sent out every week, at the rate of about 5 million per week. The schedule depends on your income, meaning how much you make according to your recent tax return will control when your check is sent.

The IRS is sending out the $1,200 paper checks for those with the lowest incomes first, and predicts it will take up to 20 weeks to fulfill all the payments.
