Why You May Not Have Gotten All Your Stimmy Money

The third-round stimulus payments, authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 and signed into law on March 11, 2021, were sent from March through December last year. Round 3 of the so-called stimmies provided a maximum credit of $1,400 per person, including all qualifying dependents claimed on a tax return.

A married couple with two qualifying dependents, for example, are eligible to receive a maximum credit of $5,600, depending on income limits. And if you brought a baby into the world last year, youll be able to file for up to $1,400 that youre owed for your new family member if you claim the child as a dependent.

The size of the credit, however, gets reduced for single filers with adjusted gross income of more than $75,000 and for married couples filing jointly with earnings of more than $150,000. For heads of household, the credit is reduced between $120,000 and $112,500.

The credit disappears entirely for individuals with AGI above $80,000 and for married couples filing jointly who earn more than $160,000. Heads of household with incomes of more than $120,000 also dont get the stimulus check. Most eligible Americans have already received the payments, according to the IRS.

What If My Mailing Address Changed Since I Received My Previous Stimulus Checks How Will I Get My Third Stimulus Check

If you are expecting to receive your third stimulus check by mail, it will be mailed to the last address you filed with the IRS. If your address has changed since then, there are different options you can take to make sure your stimulus check gets to you:

Option 1: File your 2020 federal tax return to update your address. If you havent filed your 2020 tax return yet, this is an easy way to update your address. File a tax return with your current address and your payment will be sent through the mail once the IRS receives your updated address.

Option 2: Provide your banking information in the IRS Get My Payment tool. If the post office was unable to deliver your stimulus check, it will be returned to the IRS. Two to three weeks after the payment has been issued, Get My Payment will display the message Need More Information. You will have the option to have your payment reissued as a direct deposit by providing your banking information.

If you dont provide your banking information, the IRS will mail your payment once your address is updated.

Option 3: Notify the IRS that your address has changed by telephone, an IRS form, or a written statement. It can take 4-6 weeks for the IRS to process your request.

How Much The 2021 Tax Credits Are Worth

The American Rescue Plan Act passed by Congress in 2021 temporarily made enhanced tax credits available to millions of Americans.

That included a Recovery Rebate Credit that provided third stimulus checks of $1,400 per person.

It also made existing tax credits the child tax and earned income tax credits more generous.

The child tax credit included up to $3,600 for children under age 6 and $3,000 per child ages 6 through 17. Up to half of those amounts were paid in advance through monthly child tax credit payments. However, to claim the remaining sums or the total amount if a family did not receive advance payments they need to file a federal 2021 income tax return.

The earned income tax credit, which applies to low- and middle-income workers, was also enhanced for that tax year. Workers with no children may qualify for up to $1,502, which increases to as much as $6,728 for filers with three or more children. Because eligibility was expanded for workers without children and younger and older age thresholds, more workers qualify for the credit in the 2021 tax year.

The new stimulus check will begin to phase out after $75,000, per the new “targeted” stimulus plan. If your adjusted gross income, or AGI, is $80,000 or more, you won’t be eligible for a third payment of any amount. However, if you make between $75,000 and $80,000, you could get a portion of the check. You’d receive the full amount if your yearly income is less than $75,000. Here’s how to estimate the stimulus check total you could receive.

Yes. For the third stimulus check, any household member that has an SSN qualifies for a payment.

This is different than the first and second stimulus check, where at least one tax filer must have an SSN for the household to claim the stimulus checks. That adult with the SSN and any qualifying children with SSNs will get the stimulus checks.

How To Claim Your Recovery Rebate Credit

What you need to know about the 3rd stimulus check

If you never received your third stimulus check, you can still get your funds. Rather than free money, this check was actually an advance on a tax credit called the Recovery Rebate Credit. People who received the third stimulus check arent eligible to receive the credit on their taxes. If you have never received your third stimulus check, however, you may be able to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your taxes. Similarly, many parents received advance payments on their Child Tax Credit throughout 2021.

If you didnt get your check by the time youre ready to file taxes for 2021 in 2022, you could claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your taxes. The IRS stopped issuing the third stimulus check in December 2021. Keep in mind that filing for the tax credit doesnt automatically mean youll get an extra $1,400 in your refund. Rather, the tax credit reduces your taxable income by the number of dollars the credit is worth. If you were eligible for $2,800 in third stimulus payments and your taxable income was $50,000, for example, you could subtract the $2,800 from the $50,000 to be taxed on $47,200 instead.

Although its not the same as getting a check, it has a similar financial impact to putting the amount of the check back in your pocket. The reduction in taxable income lowers the amount of taxes youll owe. If you owe money on your taxes, youll owe less by claiming the rebate credit. If you receive a refund, itll become higher.

My Third Stimulus Payment Was Too Low

Many individuals and families will find that their third stimulus checks are lower than they thought. That could be because people who make over a certain amount have part of the $1,400 payment taken away. For example, single people who make over $75,000 in adjusted gross income will have their second stimulus checks reduced by 28% of the income over $75,000. Married people filing jointly and heads of household will have their payments reduced by a similar amount.

The third stimulus payment is technically based on your 2021 income, but the IRS is using your 2020 tax return to estimate it. If your income goes down in 2021, making you eligible for a payment, or a higher payment, youll be able to file a tax return for your 2021 taxes and youll receive the stimulus money you didnt getâits called a recovery rebate credit.

My Stimulus Payment Went To The Wrong Bank Account

If the Get My Payment tool tells you your check will be direct-deposited, it will also provide the last four digits of the number of the bank account into which your stimulus payment will be deposited. For the initial checks, some individuals saw that their deposit was going to an old bank account, or they even saw bank account numbers that they didnt recognize. Heres what to do:

  • If the tool says that your payment was deposited into your bank account but you havent seen it yet, your bank may still be processing it.
  • You wont necessarily get the third check direct deposited, even if the first or second one was direct deposited.
  • If your third stimulus payment is sent to a closed bank account, the bank is required to transfer the money back to the IRS. The IRS will not redeposit it to you or mail you a paper check. Instead, you will have to file your 2021 tax return to claim your Recovery Rebate Credit. See below for instructions on claiming the rebate on your tax return.
  • If H& R Block submitted your last tax return and you signed up for a refund transfer, the IRS might deposit your stimulus payment with H& R Block . H& R Block should transfer the money to your bank account within 24 hours.
  • Those who submitted their last tax return with Turbo Tax should receive their payments in the same bank accounts through which they received their tax refunds.

To date, the IRS has made 169 million payments for the third round of stimulus checks for $1,400. The agency continues to send weekly batches of payments, so there is still time if you are waiting for your money. However, there could actually be an issue with your payment and the IRS doesn’t want you to call them with problems related to a missing check.

Reasons for a delay could include a lag in mail delivery , if the IRS has incorrect direct deposit information for you or if the agency suspects identity theft. There might be other problems if you’re a recipient of SSI, SSDI or veterans benefits. Or maybe you received a letter from the IRS saying that your $1,400 payment was sent, but the check never arrived. Then what?

What To Do If You Have Not Received Any Of The 3 Stimulus Checks While Eligible For Payments

Americans who have not received stimulus payments under the three laws passed in Congress are most likely low-income non-filers and will have to do additional paperwork with the IRS.

If you are one of the Americans who have not yet received any of the three stimulus checks distributed by the federal government through the Internal Revenue Service while you were eligible, you are most likely among the low-income people for whom the agency does not have information to process the payment.

Many of the cases of beneficiaries who have not yet received coronavirus stimulus checks are low-income individuals who are not required to file IRS tax returns. This means that the agency does not have the information on file to process the so-called Economic Impact Payments for this population.

The agency has recommended in these instances that individuals file a tax return as soon as possible even if they are not required to do so and claim the amount or amounts owed for stimulus checks through a Refund Recovery Credit.

In cases where the IRS provided an underpayment or without the extra dependent credits, taxpayers can also claim this money through the referred credit on the return this year.

In fact, the IRS reported this week that it is processing payments applicable to tax returns of individuals who filed their tax information this season for the first time because of the above reason.

You can track the status of your third stimulus check by using the IRS Get My Payment tool, available in English and Spanish. You can see whether your third stimulus check has been issued and whether your payment type is direct deposit or mail.

When you use the IRS Get My Payment tool, you will get one of the following messages:

  • A payment has been processed. You will be shown a payment date and whether the payment type is direct deposit or mail or
  • Youre eligible, but a payment has not been processed and a payment date is not available.

Payment Status Not Available, which means:

  • Your payment has not been processed or
  • Youre not eligible for a payment.

Ways To Claim The Money

What to do if you didn’t get a stimulus check

GetCTC.org, which is available in English and Spanish, provides a simplified filing process with questions to prompt users to input their information. The tool allows for people to claim the $1,400 stimulus checks, child tax credit and earned income tax credit for the 2021 tax year.

“Taxes can be intimidating GetCTC has prompts built into it,” Caines said.

Notably, if you want to claim the earned income tax credit using GetCTC.org, you will have to have a W-2 demonstrating your income handy.

For people who have earned income they can show through 1099 forms or self-employment income, other filing tools may let them claim the 2021 enhanced earned income tax credit, Caines said.

IRS Free File, which will stay open until Nov. 17 for the 2021 tax year, lets people whose incomes are $73,000 or less file online. Free fillable forms are available for any income level.

Individuals and families who miss both the GetCTC.org and IRS Free File deadlines still have up to three years to file their tax returns and claim the 2021 tax credits for which they may be eligible.

People who miss this week’s deadlines may want to try to find a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site near them that will handle prior year returns, Caines said.
