What To Know About The 2022 Tax
Even in 2022, the unprecedented nature of this years tax-filing season all comes down to the COVID pandemic. The federal government tasked the IRS with delivering most of the direct aid approved for 2021 in President Joe Bidens American Rescue Plan, whether that was the child tax credit or stimulus checks.
We urge extra attention to those who received an Economic Impact Payment or an advance Child Tax Credit last year, Rettig said. People should make sure they report the correct amount on their tax return to avoid delays.
Those features can cause delays because they leave more room for error either because the IRS didnt tally Americans stimulus totals correctly or because taxpayers made a math error.
Taxpayers are not submitting their tax returns as normal this year, says Garrett Watson, senior policy analyst at the Tax Foundation. Theres going to be wide variations in peoples experiences during this years tax season some are going to see disruptions.
When a tax return doesnt match up with IRS records, its placed in the agencys paper processing backlog, a logjam thats been increasingly harder to work through amid hiring and training challenges.
That means taxpayers are likely to encounter delays if they make a mistake when they file or even if they submit an error-free paper return. Taxpayers who also wait up until the last minute risk accumulating a significant wait time, experts say.

Bottom Line: File Early But Dont Rush
The IRS says that electronically filing an error-free tax return is more important than ever this year, using either software, a tax professional or the agencys Free File program which is open to any individual who earns $73,000 or less a year.
Taxpayers should aim to create the least amount of obstacles for the IRS in reviewing their tax filing, says Tony Molina, CPA, product evangelist at Wealthfront. The more complications and obstacles you create for the IRS, the higher chance your return will be delayed. You should absolutely aim to file early, but not at the detriment of causing even more delays through filing errors.
Once you get all your required documents from financial firms and your employers, consider keeping them all in one place by creating a physical or digital folder, Molina says.
Even if you make less than is required to file a tax return , you could be leaving money on the table if you choose not to file. Individuals in this tax bracket will need to submit a return to claim any missing stimulus or child tax credit money.
Work with a tax preparer to make sure that you get your questions answered and avoid calling the IRS directly, as the agency says it is still handling a record number of calls with limited resources.

Department Of Justice Announces Settlement With Liberty Tax Service
The Justice Department announced recently that it has filed a complaint with a U.S. District Court in Norfolk, Virginia requiring Liberty Tax Service stores, to refrain from specific acts and implement better internal compliance controls regarding the detection of false tax returns. It also requires Liberty to pay for an independent monitor to oversee Libertys compliance with the proposed court order. Separately, the United States and Liberty filed a joint motion and proposed order that, if adopted by the court, would resolve the matter.
Liberty is one of the largest tax preparation service providers in the United States, according to its public filings.
Through its stores, Liberty filed approximately 1.3 to 1.9 million tax returns each year between 2015 and 2019, and for tax years 2012 to 2018, Liberty claimed over $28 billion in federal tax refunds on behalf of its customers.
The Justice Department has been investigating Libertys policies, practices and procedures in connection with Libertys tax return preparation activities. Liberty has cooperated to resolve this matter.
The complaint alleges that Liberty directly controls its company-owned stores and that it maintains a substantial degree of control over franchisees. According to the complaint, returns prepared by franchisees and filed electronically with the IRS flow through Liberty before they are filed.
In their settlement, the parties request that:
and require Liberty to:

How Do I File My Taxes For Free
When it comes to free tax filing options, all products are not created equally.
During our analysis, we reviewed the free advertised versions of each of the six platforms and awarded H& R Block as our best free pick. But while these tax online products do provide limited free filing options, many of the same providers partnered with the IRS Free File Program to offer a different free product for those who may qualify.
The IRS Free File Program allows you to file your tax return for free if you have an adjusted gross income of less than $72,000. Your AGI is your total income minus certain deductions. Before using this service, you should browse each product offering to see which free product works best for you.
While this program has been in existence since 2001, you may not have heard of it. The IRS estimates that 70% of all taxpayers qualify for the program, only a small percentage of taxpayers have used it.
Since online tax software providers donate these services, they advertise them very little. The free versions from tax software online providers that youll typically see advertised on the top of the page if you Google file taxes for free are different. The main difference? The product youll find through IRS Free File may allow you to file more forms for free than the advertised version.
