Havent Received 2nd Stimulus Check? Here Are 4 Reasons Why

To find the amounts of your Economic Impact Payments, check:

Your Online Account: Securely access your individual IRS account online to view the total of your first, second and third Economic Impact Payment amounts under the Economic Impact Payment Information section on the Tax Records page.

IRS EIP Notices: We mailed these notices to the address we have on file.

  • Notice 1444: Shows the first Economic Impact Payment sent for tax year 2020
  • Notice 1444-B: Shows the second Economic Impact Payment sent for tax year 2020
  • Notice 1444-C: Shows the third Economic Impact Payment sent for tax year 2021

Letter 6475: Through March 2022, we’ll send this letter confirming the total amount of the third Economic Impact Payment and any plus-up payments you received for tax year 2021.

You will need the total payment information from your online account or your letter to accurately calculate your Recovery Rebate Credit. For married filing joint individuals, each spouse will need to log into their own online account or review their own letter for their half of the total payment.

What If You Got An Irs Letter In The Mail But No Payment

About 15 days after the IRS sends your third stimulus check , you should get a letter from the agency confirming your payment. The IRS is still sending these letters for the third payment.

If you received this letter also called Notice 1444, Your Economic Impact Payment but you never got your payment, youll need to request a payment trace. Make sure you keep the letter because youll need the information to file your claim. The same is true for the first and second stimulus checks as well.

What If I Already Filed My Return And My Refund Was Adjusted

If you are filed your 2020 or 2021 tax return before starting a trace and did not include the payment amount on line 16 or 19 of the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet, you may receive a notice saying your Recovery Rebate Credit was adjusted.

After the trace has been completed and it is determined your payment has not been cashed, an adjustment will be made and a check sent to the taxpayer. You will not need to take any additional action to receive the credit.

Stimulus Checks Could Be Seized To Cover Past Due Debt

If you owe child support or other debts, your first check was seized to cover those debts. The third check is subject to being taken by private debt collectors, but not the state or federal government. The same goes for the second payment, too, if you’re claiming missing money in a recovery rebate credit. You may receive a notice from the Bureau of the Fiscal Service or your bank if either of these scenarios happens.

In the case of the third check, we recommend calling your bank to confirm the garnishment request from creditors and ask for details about how long you have to file a request with a local court to stop the garnishment. If you think money has already been mistakenly seized from the first two checks, you can file a recovery rebate credit as part of your 2020 tax return — but only if you filed a tax extension.

You can track down your stimulus payment without picking up the phone.

Your Financial Situation Changed From 2019 To 2020

Any changes to your financial situation in 2020 may affect your payment amount and receipt.

For most people, this will result from job or income loss due to the pandemic. If your income was higher than the phaseout thresholds in 2019, but your hours were cut or you only worked for part of 2020, you can claim the stimulus money you didnt receive using the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return.

If you had a baby in 2020, got married or divorced, you were previously claimed as a dependent, or you have a child who aged out of being claimed as a dependent, you may receive more after claiming the credit as well.

When youre ready to file 2020 federal taxes, an accountant or tax filing service may be helpful to clarify your exact eligibility. If you file on your own, your Form 1040 will include a Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet to help you determine the total amount youre eligible for.

How To Track The Status Of Your Stimulus Check

The IRS has created a Get My Payment portal so you can learn the status of your payment. It provides updates on whether the IRS is processing your check or has already scheduled your payment whether your payment will be made by a paper check, prepaid debit card or through direct deposit to your bank account and whether there are problems holding up your payment.

To use this portal, you must input your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number along with your date of birth, street address and postal code. The IRS updates its status tracking information daily. You should get a letter about 15 days after the IRS issues your payment telling you how much you received and how you received it.

After using the IRS tracker, you may sign up for a free service from the post office that tells you exactly when your stimulus check will arrive in the mail.

Why Some Americans Never Received Their Stimulus Check

The CARES Act, passed earlier in the pandemic in 2020, had expressly banned garnishment of the stimulus checks, but no secure provision was included in the American Rescue Plan Act earlier this year.

Here’s What You Need to Remember: In 2020, when stimulus checks went out, those were intercepted as well, although, per the Californian report, the state went on to respond with a good-faith effort to halt garnishments on the second and third rounds of stimulus checks.

The pandemic changed things for city and state governments in many ways, with the governments expected to pay out more money than usual, while sometimes collecting less money than they typically do.

In California, the states Department of Child Support Services managed to collect much more money than usual in 2020 than it does most years.

According to The Californian, in 2020 the agency kept about $430 million of the $2.8 billion it collected, sending $207 million to the states coffers, an increase of about 25% from the year before. Most of the money goes to the children, but the state keeps some of it.

Thats because the state of California makes a practice of intercepting aid checks meant for Californians who are behind on child-support payments. In 2020, when stimulus checks went out, those were intercepted as well, although, per the Californian report, the state went on to respond with a good-faith effort to halt garnishments on the second and third rounds of stimulus checks.

Why Did We Get Only Half The Amount

Many couples are finding that they are getting direct deposits for only a portion of what they think their stimulus payment should be. Some have gotten half of their payment deposited one week and half the next, and other couples are finding that their dependents share of the stimulus money is split between the two parents.

The IRS has explained that the first payment made might be based on a taxpayers 2019 tax return, and the second payment is a plus-up payment that is based on the taxpayers 2020 tax return.

The IRS has also said that part of the problem may be with injured spouse claims on a tax return. of only one spouse, the injured spouse can request a refund.) The IRS says that these couples will get their payments as two separate payments.

If you havent received the full amount, wait until you get your Notice 1444, Your Economic Impact Payment, from the IRS. That letter should have the correct amount of your stimulus payment. If you dont receive deposits or checks in that amount, you may have to file a Recovery Rebate Credit . You can also read the IRSs press release from April 1, which contains a lot of helpful details.

Youre A Member Of A Mixed

Under the CARES Act, U.S. adults with a Social Security number werent eligible for a stimulus check if they were in a mixed-status household, meaning one partner was undocumented or didnt have an SSN. A recent law change, however, scraps that rule. Now, individuals would be able to receive both payments retroactively meaning both the first and second stimulus payment for the taxpayers and qualifying children of the family who have work-eligible SSNs.

Youll want to reconcile that first amount with your Recovery Rebate Credit, if you didnt receive it.

How To Make Sure You Receive Your Credits As Soon As Possible

IT

The Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet requires that you know the specific amounts you were supposed to receive, according to the IRS. By doing the investigation and calculation work in advance, youll most likely end up getting your stimulus check and tax refund faster.

To get it correct, that cannot be overemphasized, Steber says. These Recovery Rebate Credits are real cash, and they sent out hundreds of millions in the two tranches. If you did in fact receive it and forget about it, it could add weeks to your tax return timeline.

Your tax refund will be passed more quickly and safely if you electronically file and provide a direct deposit, the IRS says.

Typically, the IRS is good at sending out refunds within a couple of weeks within electronically filing, Bronnenkant says.

Not included in 2020s Recovery Rebate Credit is a third stimulus payment worth $1,400 or more, distributed to Americans beginning in mid-March after President Joe Biden signed the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan. Taxpayers will most likely have to wait until 2021 to claim those missing relief payments, Jaeger says.

Americans Who Didnt Receive The Full Stimulus Amount That They Were Entitled To

If you received a payment but you dont think it was as much as it shouldve been, you should claim your Recovery Rebate Credit.

Americans should first think back to what they were eligible for from both rounds of stimulus payments. Individuals earning up to $75,000 in adjustable gross income were eligible for the full $1,200 payment in March and the second $600 payment from late December and early January. Married couples earning up to $150,000 were eligible for payments twice that size. Those earners were also eligible for an extra $500 and $600 for every dependent claimed on their taxes.

After that, payments phased out by $5 per every $100 over those income thresholds. This is probably where it gets a bit trickier.

Because the first stimulus check was larger, payments phased out at a later point on the income scale than they did for the second round. Reduced $1,200 checks went out to individuals who made up to $99,000 a year and married couples who earned up to $198,000. In the second round, individuals and married filers were eligible for a partial check up until earning $87,000 and $174,000, respectively.

Its important to calculate first for yourself how much youre owed. Then, compare that with official documents from the IRS showing your stimulus check amount. Those can include the letter accompanying your payment, as well as another special form, Notice 1444 or Notice 1444-B, which most likely came with your first check earlier in 2020.

What To Do If There’s A Direct Deposit Issue

The IRS tracking tool for the third stimulus check doesn’t allow you to add direct deposit information this time unless the IRS can’t deliver your payment. So if you have a problem, what do you do?
