What About A Third Stimulus Check
The odds of another direct payment, or a third coronavirus stimulus check, rose after the pair of U.S. Senate wins by the Democratic Party flipped control of the chamber to Democrats. Goldman Sachs wrote in a report Monday that Democratic control of the Senate is likely to lead to greater fiscal stimulus in the near term. We expect Congress to approve an additional $750bn in additional fiscal relief in late February or early March.
Sen. Chuck Schumer, who is expected to become the Senate majority leader, told reporters on Wednesday that one of the first things that I want to do when our new Senators are seated is deliver the $2,000 checks to the American families. Schumer can count on a signature from incoming President Joe Biden, who has already reaffirmed support for a $2,000 stimulus check.
The IRS adds, If additional legislation is enacted to provide for an additional amount, the Economic Impact Payments that have been issued will be topped up as quickly as possible.
Who Is Eligible For The $600 Checks How Much Should I Expect
The checks this time around will be up to $600 for individuals or $1,200 for married couples and up to $600 for each qualifying child. These stimulus checks will decrease for households with 2019 adjusted gross incomethat is, federally taxable incomeabove $75,000 per individual or $150,000 per qualified couple. The checks completely phase out for individuals earning above $99,000, and joint filers with no children at $198,000.
What If I Receive Social Security Through The Direct Express Debit Card
The IRS says that people who receive government benefits such as Social Security, Railroad Retirement benefits, Supplemental Security Income or Veteran’s Benefits through Direct Express a debit card that automatically receives payments will get their second stimulus checks deposited onto that card.
But the IRS cautioned, “The bank information shown in Get My Payment will be a number associated with your Direct Express card and may be a number you don’t recognize.”

How Do I Get My Second Stimulus Check
You dont need to do anything if:
- You have filed a tax return for tax year 2019.
- You are a Social Security recipient, including Social Security Disability Insurance , railroad retiree. Or, you are a Supplemental Security Insurance and Veterans Affairs beneficiary.
- You have successfully registered for the first stimulus check online using the IRS Non-Filers tool or submitted a simplified tax return that has been processed by the IRS.
The IRS shouldve automatically sent your payment. All second stimulus checks were issued by January 15, 2021. If you didnt get a second stimulus check by then , you can claim your second stimulus check as the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit on your 2020 tax return or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.
What To Do If You’re Still Waiting For A Stimulus Check
The IRS has created a specific tax credit for eligible taxpayers who didn’t get the stimulus money that was owed to them according to legislation that passed in 2020 . It’s called the Recovery Rebate Credit. You’ll find it on line 30 of your 2020 tax return.
For the fastest processing, the IRS encourages citizens to file 2020 tax returns electronically. The agency has not yet announced when you can start filing 2020 tax returns. As the situation unfolds, more information may become available.

What If I Got Divorced In 2020 Or My Divorce Is Still In Progress
As you likely already learned during the first round of economic impact payments, your stimulus payment is based entirely on your 2019 tax return. If you filed jointly in 2019, your payment will be deposited into the same bank account or your check will be mailed to the same address as your 2019 filing.
If you have access to the bank account that the stimulus is deposited into, but your ex or estranged spouse does not, please consult with your divorce attorney about your next steps before spending or moving the money. If you do not have access to the account and your ex does, your divorce attorney can also give you guidance about how to get your share of the stimulus payment.
If your divorce is not finalized yet, the division of stimulus funds will likely be part of larger financial settlement agreements that must be made regarding your shared property and finances. Make sure that your attorney is aware of all money that you expect from the stimulus payments or any deposits or checks that youve received.
If your divorce is already finalized, tax issues addressed in your marital settlement agreement may govern how the payments are allocated. If your agreement doesnt address taxes, you may need a mediator or your attorneys assistance to bring the matter before the judge for post-divorce judgment. Your legal fees may exceed the amount of the stimulus payment, so mutual agreement, compromise, or mediation may be better first steps than immediately rushing to court.
Where Is My Second Stimulus Check
All second stimulus checks were issued by January 15, 2021. If you didnt get a second stimulus check by then , you can claim your second stimulus check as the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit on your 2020 tax return or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.
You can request a trace of your stimulus check. You should only request a payment trace if you received IRS Notice 1444-B showing that your second stimulus check was issued or if your IRS account shows your payment amount and you havent received your second stimulus check.

Will My Stimulus Check Be Seized If I Owe Back Child Support
Probably not, but possibly. Unlike the first round of stimulus checks under the CARES Act, the second piece of legislation specifically blocks the IRS from this. The bill says no applicable payment shall be subject to execution, levy, attachment, garnishment, or other legal process, or the operation of any bankruptcy or insolvency law.
This only prevents the seizure of this money prior to the money being deposited into your account or a check being issued to you. Once you have the money, this may not prevent a judge from ordering you to pay your outstanding support or judgment with the money. You should consult with an attorney about your specific situation in family court and consult with a tax professional to determine your specific tax situation.
One possible exception to this would be if you did not file a tax return for 2019 and do not receive the check. Because direct payments are technically an advance on a 2020 tax credit, if you file your 2020 taxes in the spring of 2021 and receive your payment at that time, the stimulus check amount will be lumped into your general tax refund, which can be seized for back child support.
If you are the parent who is owed backed child support, this means that you will not necessarily receive the seized amount as you normally would with a tax refund for the direct payment of the second stimulus check to your opposing party.
When Will I Get My Check And How Can I Track It
The $900 billion stimulus bill required the IRS to send all second stimulus checks by January 15, 2021. Eligible recipients who did not get a payment by the cutoff date now have to claim their money as a Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2020 tax return .
The Treasury Department estimates that eight million eligible recipients may not have gotten their first or second stimulus checks. And President Biden signed an executive order on January 22 tasking the department with the equitable and effective delivery of direct payments to all of those qualifying recipients.
The IRS has made stimulus payments via direct deposit, paper check and economic impact payment card. The first direct deposit payments arrived as early as December 29, 2020. Paper checks started getting mailed on December 30, 2020, and the IRS has sent out approximately eight million prepaid debit cards loaded with the federal stimulus payments. You can follow up on the status of both your first and second checks by using the Get My Payment portal.
People who get Social Security retirement benefits, Social Security survivor benefits, Social Security disability benefits, Supplemental Security Income , Railroad Retirement benefits and VA benefits were able to receive second stimulus checks via direct deposit as long as they had their bank account on file with the IRS.

If You Don’t Receive A Second Stimulus Check
Eligible Americans who don’t receive a stimulus check this year either the first or the second payment will be able to claim it when they file their 2020 tax return . When you file your 2020 tax return, you may be able to claim a “recovery rebate” tax credit for stimulus check amount you should have received.
Why You May Not Have Gotten All Your Stimmy Money
The third-round stimulus payments, authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 and signed into law on March 11, 2021, were sent from March through December last year. Round 3 of the so-called stimmies provided a maximum credit of $1,400 per person, including all qualifying dependents claimed on a tax return.
A married couple with two qualifying dependents, for example, are eligible to receive a maximum credit of $5,600, depending on income limits. And if you brought a baby into the world last year, youll be able to file for up to $1,400 that youre owed for your new family member if you claim the child as a dependent.
The size of the credit, however, gets reduced for single filers with adjusted gross income of more than $75,000 and for married couples filing jointly with earnings of more than $150,000. For heads of household, the credit is reduced between $120,000 and $112,500.
The credit disappears entirely for individuals with AGI above $80,000 and for married couples filing jointly who earn more than $160,000. Heads of household with incomes of more than $120,000 also dont get the stimulus check. Most eligible Americans have already received the payments, according to the IRS.

Will There Be A Third Stimulus Check Of $2000
Maybe. The CASH Act bill, which included $2,000 stimulus checks for qualifying individuals, passed in the House in December but was blocked from reaching the Senate floor by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell .
But with Democrats almost certainly taking a slim majority in the Senate, a third stimulus check is back on the table. On Tuesday, Joe Biden said that if Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock won their respective Senate races in Georgia, he would send $2,000 checks to qualifying Americans. Its unclear if this would be an additional $2,000 on top of the $600 checks that have already been sent out, or that Americans would be sent the difference between the two amounts.
You Didnt Get Either Stimulus Check You Might Still Be In Luck
One thing to keep in mind: Those who did not receive a first or second stimulus check but are eligible to claim one will be able to get that money when they file their 2020 taxes. The IRS urges taxpayers who didnt receive a payment this year to review the eligibility criteria when they file their 2020 taxes many people, including recent college graduates, may be eligible to claim it. People will see the Economic Impact Payment referred to as the Recovery Rebate Credit on Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR since the EIPs are an advance payment of the RRC, according to the agency.

My Stimulus Payment Was Too High
Some individuals whose income increased too much in 2019 were not eligible for a full stimulus payment, but they got one anyway since the IRS based the payment on their 2018 taxes. Those individuals will not have to pay back the payment.
In other cases, families were paid an extra $500 or $600 for children who were 17 or older . This could happen if the IRS took the number of children who qualified for the child tax credit in 2018 without updating children’s ages for 2019. But in other cases, it looks like the IRS took the number of dependents from a family’s 2018 tax return, without regard to their age. The IRS has said that those who received such overpayments will not have to pay them back.
A Direct Deposit Payment Could Already Be In Your Bank Account Paper Checks Will Follow Quickly
When are second stimulus checks coming? Now! The IRS has already started delivering second-round stimulus checks to millions of Americans who received a first-round payment earlier this year. In fact, initial direct deposit payments have already arrived for some people.
If you don’t receive a direct deposit soon, watch your mail for either a paper check or a debit card. The IRS started mailing paper checks on December 30. To speed up delivery, a limited number of people will receive their second stimulus payment by debit card. But the form of payment for your second stimulus check may be different than your first payment. Some people who received a paper check last time might receive a debit card this time, and some people who received a debit card last time could receive a paper check.
If you receive a debit card, don’t throw it out thinking it’s junk mail! The debit cards will be issued by MetaBank, and they will arrive in a white envelope that prominently displays the U.S. Treasury Department’s seal. The Visa name will be on the front of the card, and it will say “MetaBank” on the back. More information about these cards is available at EIPcard.com.

Stimulus Check Update: When Will You Get Your Second Payment
A second round of stimulus checks will be sent to Americans under the new coronavirus relief deal that Democratic and Republican leaders reached on Sunday. But the direct payments will be half as much as the first.
The news comes eight months after the first stimulus checks of up to $1,200 plus $500 for child dependents were sent out. In this deal, the payments will be up to $600 for individuals and $600 for each child dependent.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi , Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell , Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer , and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy agreed on the new $900 billion stimulus package after a series of meetings last week, breaking a months-long gridlock in negotiations. Around $166 billion of the package is earmarked to go directly to Americans wallets.
Under the CARES Act, around 160 million Americans received a stimulus payment of up to $1,200 plus $500 for any child dependent amounting to over $270 billion out of the $2.2 trillion relief package passed in March.
Heres what you need to know about the second round of stimulus checks.
How Much Will My Check Be
The legislation includes a $600 payment for an adult $1,200 for a married couple filing jointly plus $600 per dependent child under the age of 17 at the end of the tax year. The bill uses the same definition of child as for the child tax credit. There is no cap on the number of children that qualify. Children over the age of 17 that are still dependents as well as adult dependents do not qualify for this round of stimulus payments.
The stimulus payment also includes a phaseout if you made more than $75,000 and several levels of reduction for those who reported making more than that. This, again, is based on your 2019 taxes. So if you reported a considerable income in 2019 but lost your job and have had no income for large portions of 2020, you will not be issued a check automatically. Consult your tax professional to see how this advance on the tax credit will affect your 2020 tax filing.

I Had A Problem With The First Or Second Payment
Some individuals had too much income in 2019 to qualify for the first or second stimulus payment , but their income decreased enough in 2020 for them to qualify. If you fall into this category, you can file a tax return for your 2020 taxes and you’ll receive a recovery rebate credit as part of your refund .
In other cases, families received stimulus payments by direct deposit but the IRS neglected to add money for one or more of their children. Sometimes there didn’t seem to be a reason for this . For other families, it seems the IRS did not update the number of children that taxpayers have, even for families who claimed new children on their 2019 tax returns. You’ll be able to claim the rest of the stimulus payment when you file your next tax return.
Why Is It Saying Payment Not Available
This was a message that frustrated many consumers in the first round of checks, and resulted from a number of issues, such as if the IRS was still verifying whether a person qualified for a check.
Some people are receiving this message with the second round of stimulus checks, which the IRS says either means the person doesn’t qualify for a check such as if their income exceeds the eligibility threshold or the IRS says it was “unable to issue you an EIP 2 payment,” which is the IRS’ term for the second stimulus check.
The IRS said that it might not be able to issue a second stimulus payment if it is still processing your most recent tax return.
