How Your Second Stimulus Check Will Differ From The First One

Second Round of Stimulus Checks

The COVID-Related Tax Relief Act authorizes a second round of stimulus checks. While your second stimulus check will be similar to your first payment, there are some important differences.

A second stimulus check will be a blessing for people who are struggling financially because of the coronavirus pandemic. Thankfully, Congress finally passed, and the president finally signed, another economic stimulus bill , which authorizes a second round of direct payments to many Americans.

However, while your second stimulus check will look a lot like the earlier stimulus payment you received under the CARES Act, there are several important differences. The amount, for one, won’t be the same. Eligibility for a second stimulus check is different, too. So that you’re not caught off guard, let’s take a look at the second-round stimulus checks and see how they differ from the CARES Act payments. You might benefit more from your second-round stimulus check than you did from your first payment. But you won’t know unless you read on!

Irs Statement About Second Economic Impact Payments

The IRS updated the Get My Payment tool with information related to the second round of Economic Impact Payments. There is currently heavy demand on the tool given the large number of payments going out and people using the tool.

While the IRS has been able to deliver the second round of Economic Impact Payments in record time, we understand there are many questions and we appreciate everyoneâs patience during this period.

Here are answers to some common questions coming up related to Get My Payment and the second round of Economic Impact Payments.

Breaks To Delay Second Round Of Irs Coronavirus Stimulus Checks

Many Americans have been expecting a second round of IRS stimulus checks during the coronavirus pandemic because the Democrat-led House of Representatives passed a phase four bill that would send out more checks.

Crispin Odeys flagship hedge fund strategy, Odey European, is one of the worlds top-performing hedge funds this year. At the end of November, the strategy was up nearly 60% in 2021, a sharp turnaround from last years performance. In 2020, the fund lost -30.5% as markets moved against the firm. However, Republicans have dubbed the bill dead on arrival and a sort of liberal wish list. Because of the lengthy debate that will ensue over it, and the fact that Republicans want to wait to see the impact of the packages that have already been passed, its unlikely that we will see more checks any time soon.

The Democrats package that would send a second round of IRS stimulus checks has already passed the House, but the Senate wont be taking it up for a while. The Senate will be on recess all of next week for the Memorial Day holiday on Monday. Senators also have a two-week recess that starts on July 3.

An expert told CNBC that the deadline to take up the debate over a second round of IRS stimulus checks for the coronavirus could become July 3. That would mean the debate could start after the Memorial Day break and last through June.

Support For A Fourth Stimulus Check

A group of Democratic Senators, including Ron Wyden of Oregon, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Bernie Sanders of Vermont, sent a letter to President Joe Biden at the end of March requesting recurring direct payments and automatic unemployment insurance extensions tied to economic conditions.

As the Senators reasoned in their letter, this crisis is far from over, and families deserve certainty that they can put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads. Families should not be at the mercy of constantly-shifting legislative timelines and ad hoc solutions.

An earlier letter to President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris from 53 Representatives, led by Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, carved out a similar position. Recurring direct payments until the economy recovers will help ensure that people can meet their basic needs, provide racially equitable solutions, and shorten the length of the recession.

Additional co-signers included New Yorks Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Michigans Rashida Tlaib, two other notable names among House Progressives. The letter didnt place a number on the requested stimulus payments. But a tweet soon after put it at $2,000 per month for the length of the pandemic.

$2,000 monthly payments until the pandemic is over.

Find Out If Your State Still Owes You A Tax Rebate Or Stimulus Check

Second Round Of Stimulus Checks SmashDaTopic

South Carolina is mailing out refunds through the end of the year, and California wonât finish until January 2023.

Many states are still issuing tax refunds and stimulus checks as residents cope with ongoing inflation. Massachusetts only began returning $3 billion in surplus tax revenue in November. The Massachusetts payments, equal to about 14% of an individualâs 2021 state tax liability, are expected to continue to be issued at least through about Dec 15.

South Carolina will continue issuing for up to $800 through the end of the year, and residents of California, Colorado, Massachusetts and Hawaii are also still receiving their payments

Adult Dependents From College Students To Seniors

No adult dependents will qualify for the $600 checks, according to the Tax Foundation.

This means that most college students, who are typically claimed as dependents by their parents, won’t qualify for the checks. That rankled some college students, who expressed their frustration on social media. Many are struggling with a range of issues in the pandemic, from food insecurity to lost income from campus jobs that were curtailed because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Older adults, from seniors to disabled individuals, who are claimed as dependents are also excluded, an issue that some on social media called “a slap in the face.”

Disabled adults and seniors who are claimed as dependents often face higher costs due to issues such as higher medical expenses.

Is My Second Stimulus Check Taxable

The IRS does not consider stimulus checks taxable income. This means that you do not have to report them on your tax return or pay income taxes on either check.

Eligible recipients who did not get the first or second stimulus checks can claim a recovery rebate credit to increase their tax refund or lower their tax liability. So if you are expecting to get money back on your 2020 tax return, your refund could get a big boost depending on how much stimulus money the government owes you.

And comparatively, if you expect to owe taxes on your 2020 return, then you can use your recovery rebate credit to offset your tax bill and get a refund for the remaining amount.

Many taxpayers this year are looking to their tax refunds to get extra money for their finances. For reference, the average tax refund in 2020 was more than $2,500. The IRS expects over 150 million tax returns to be filed this year.

The 2021 tax season will begin on February 12. And taxpayers will need to file their 2020 returns by April 15.

How Much Will I Get

The IRS is sending $600 to each eligible adult and child not the $2,000 that had been pushed by President Donald Trump.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday blocked an attempt to vote on the $2,000 stimulus checks approved by the House, but resurrected the higher payments in a new bill that includes other items on Mr. Trump’s wish list, including the repeal of Section 230, which shields social media companies from lawsuits.

While it’s unlikely the stimulus checks will get bumped up to $2,000, the Treasury Department said it would be able to handle that possibility. “If additional legislation is enacted to provide for an increased amount, Economic Impact Payments that have been issued will be topped up as quickly as possible,” according to a Treasury statement on December 29.

The second round of payments directs $600 for single people who earn up to $75,000 and $1,200 to married couples who earn up to $150,000.

The amount then declines for people earning above those thresholds, and completely phases out for single people who earn over $87,000 and married couples with earnings over $174,000. Children under 17 years old will receive $600 each. Children who are 17 are ineligible, as are adult dependents, such as college students and some disabled people claimed as dependents on their relatives’ tax returns.

More people are eligible for the second round of stimulus checks than in the first, the IRS added.

Q How Will I Get My Third Stimulus Check If Im An American Living Overseas

A Second Round of Stimulus Checks may be on the way

A. There are two ways overseas Americans can get their third stimulus payment: Direct deposit or through the mail.

You should get your check via direct deposit if you received your latest tax refund through direct deposit or if the IRS has your direct deposit info from the last round of stimulus checks and you havent filed yet this year.

You need to have an account with a U.S. bank in order to get direct deposit.

We recommend you update your address if you:

  • Dont know what address is on file
  • Have moved to a different address
  • Want your check sent somewhere other than the address they have on file

In addition to Form 8822, Change of Address, you may be able to update your address via phone, through a written statement, or on your tax return. You can see the IRS most up-to-date address change info on the IRS website.

Q. What happens if I live abroad and my direct deposit payment is returned by my U.S. financial institution?

A. Once your payment is returned, the IRS will issue your payment by mail as a check or U.S. Treasury-issued debit card. Typically, IRS will reissue the payment by mail within two weeks. Once the payment is reissued, the IRS Get My Payment tool will update to reflect your payment status.

Q. What if my third stimulus check was for the wrong amount?

A. If you didnt receive the full amount of the third payment you were owed , there are two times when you may receive additional stimulus money:

If you owe child support, the IRS can use first-round stimulus check money to pay arrears. That won’t be the case for second-round payments under the HEROES Act.

In addition, second-round stimulus money wouldn’t be taken to pay back taxes or other debts owed to the federal or a state government.

Things To Know About The Second Round Of Stimulus Payments

In late December, lawmakers passed a coronavirus relief package that provides essential economic relief for millions of workers and people with low incomes, though it falls short of the high levels of need. One component of the package is a second round of stimulus payments. Despite wide news coverage about these payments, many have questions about whos eligible and how to receive the payments. These payments also have some different eligibility rules than those distributed earlier. Below are ten things to know about the second round of payments:

1. The payments will be $600 per qualifying adult and $600 per child under 17 years old. Children who are 17 years old and older as well as other dependents, such as those who are permanently disabled, are not eligible for the $600 payment. CLASP is disappointed that Congress failed to include the adult dependent population in the stimulus payments. You will not need to pay back the IRS because the payments are an advance against a new credit for tax year 2020. These payments will not affect eligibility for other tax credits.

7. Like other tax refunds, these payments will not be counted toward eligibility for means-tested programs and will be disregarded as an asset for 12 months. This means the payments wont jeopardize your participation in programs including Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program , and public housing. In addition, the rebate checks are not considered taxable income.

The Inflation Reduction Act Will Lower Some Healthcare Costs

Second Round of Stimulus Checks Update

Last years legislation also includes provisions that could lower your healthcare bills in 2023. The 50 million Americans enrolled in Medicare Part D will now have their pharmacy costs capped at $2,000 per year.

The Biden administration estimates that 1.4 million Americans will enjoy cost savings. Another major provision limits insulin costs to $35 per month, which the administration says will benefit 3.5 million Medicare recipients.

When Will I Get My Stimulus Payment

Last spring, most people who filed 2019 tax returns showing they were eligible for a stimulus check received their money by direct deposit or mail within weeks of when the law was passed. For many others, however, it took months as the government sorted out how to get people who didn’t file tax returns their payments.

There is reason to think there will be fewer and shorterdelays this time. In most cases, the government will be able to reuse the payment information it has already gathered. On Dec. 29, the IRS and Treasury Department announced that the first batch of direct deposits for these payments were being issued on that day and paper checks would start to be mailed on Dec. 30.

While the Treasury Department generally will send a paper check to those people who are not receiving the payment through direct deposit, in some cases the agency may send a debit card instead of a check. Some people who received a paper check in the first round of payments may get a debit card this time and vice versa. If you receive a debit card, it will have the Visa name on the front of the card and the issuing bank, MetaBank®, N.A. on the back.

Trumps Stance On More Stimulus Checks

Second round of stimulus checks?

The Republican congressional leadership had endorsed a last-minute proposal from the Trump administration, unveiled by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, that included $600 payments per person. After a bipartisan compromise endorsed that proposal and passed in Congress, Trump threatened to scuttle it unless it more than doubled the payments to $2,000 per eligible individual.

How Much Will I Get And Who Is Eligible

The maximum amount for this second round of stimulus checks is $600 for any eligible individual or $1,200 per eligible couple who file taxes jointly. For a family of four, that would include $600 for each eligible dependent, or $2,400 in total. Individuals who reported adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less on their 2019 tax returns will receive the full $600 . For people who earned more than those amounts, the size of the check will gradually decrease by $5 for every $100 earned over that threshold.

You can figure out the size of your payment by using AARPs Second Stimulus Check Calculator.

Because the maximum size of a stimulus check this time is half the size of the first round, some people who earn more than $75,000 per year and got a check in the spring may not get one in the second round. Roughly estimated, individuals who earned more than $87,000 in 2019, couples that made more than $174,000, and head of households who earned more than $124,500 may not get payments in the second round.

This second round uses similar criteria to determine which dependents are eligible. That means only children age 16 and younger claimed on a 2019 tax return qualify. But this time, each eligible child dependent will receive a payment worth $100 more than the first round. Adult dependents are not eligible for a stimulus check if they were claimed as a dependent on a 2019 tax return.
