Third Round Of Stimulus Checks: March 2021

Barely a week after the second round of stimulus payments were completed, new president Joe Biden entered office and immediately unveiled his American Rescue Plan, which proposed a third of round of payments to Americans, including some of those who might have missed out on the first two rounds.

On Thursday 11 March, Biden signed his $1.9tn American Rescue Plan into law. The third payment provided eligible individual taxpayers for a check of up to $1,400, while couples filing jointly could receive a maximum of $2,800. In addition, families with dependents were eligible for an extra payment of $1,400 per dependent, regardless of the dependent’s age this time, there was no limit to the number of dependents that could be claimed for.

The first stimulus payments were issued swiftly – just hours after Biden has signed the bill, the first batch of 164 million payments, with a total value of approximately $386 billion, arrived by direct deposit in individuals bank accounts. Some received their payments on the weekend of 13/14 March 2021. Since then, payments had been sent on a weekly basis including “plus-up” payments until the end of the year. Like before, those who didn’t get all the EPI3 funds in 2021 due to them will be able to claim them when they file their tax returns in the spring of 2022.

Who Gets A Stimulus Check

Stimulus checks are available to eligible U.S. individuals with Social Security numbers. However, eligibility rules vary depending on the checks.

For the first two payments, anyone claimed as a dependent wasnt eligible for their own check. However, individuals who claimed dependents under 17 could receive a payment for them. The third check still prohibits dependents from claiming their own checks. However, individuals who claim dependents can now receive a payment for adult dependents as well as for dependent children over age 17.

There are also income limits. Each of the three checks is available in full to single tax filers with an income under $75,00. Heads of house with an income under $112,500 are also eligible, as are married joint filers with an income under $150,000. However, phase-out rules the level at which high earners lose eligibility for checks differ for each payment, as well discuss in more detail below.

The IRS utilized tax return information from 2018 or 2019 to determine income and eligibility for the first two checks. It will use tax return information from 2019 or 2020 to determine income and eligibility for the third payment. The agency also obtained information from the Social Security Administration and VA to send payments to benefits recipients who dont file tax returns. And it established an online form for non-filers to claim their payments.

The IRS has created a website where you can check the status of your stimulus payment.

The final date to qualify has already passed for filers other than those with pending ITINs. If you have already filed, you dont have to do anything.

If you have not received a payment by now, you will most likely receive a paper check. In addition, if you did not receive a refund with your tax return or owed money at the time of filing, you will receive a paper check.

Payments will go out based on the last 3 digits of the ZIP code on your 2020 tax return. Some payments may need extra time to process for accuracy and completeness. If your tax return is processed during or after the date of your scheduled ZIP code payment, allow up to 60 days after your return has processed. Please allow up to three weeks to receive the paper checks once they are mailed out.

Stimulus Check : Whats Changing

The Senate proposal would provide a $500 benefit for dependent children of all ages, including college students and adults with disabilities. The first round of stimulus checks limited this payment to dependent children ages 16 and younger. This means that families with older dependents could receive more money with stimulus check 2.

House Democrats put forward a similar proposal, though their HEROES Act would have increased the benefit amount to $1,200 per dependent but limited total payments to $6,000 per family. The initial draft of the HEALS Act does not appear to cap the number of eligible dependents per family.

CNBC also reports that stimulus check 2 is protected from garnishment by debt collectors and banks, though unpaid child support can still be taken out of benefits. In addition, prisoners who are incarcerated in 2020 will remain largely ineligible.

Golden State Stimulus Check #2

The Golden State Stimulus II payments are different from the Golden State Stimulus I payments.

GSS I payments were a one-time check of either $600 or $1,200.

As mentioned above, it went out to those who typically earned less than $30,000 and received the California Earned Income Tax Credit, or CalEITC, or those who filed their taxes with an Individual Tax Identification Number, or ITIN.

However, GSS II has been expanded so that more Californians qualify.

Here are the eligibility requirements for GSS II:

More Money For Certain Families

One big change with third stimulus checks was that an extra $1,400 was tacked on to your payment for any dependent in the family. For the first- and second-round payments, the additional amount allowed $500 for first-round payments and $600 in the second round was only given for dependent children age 16 or younger. As a result, families with older children, including college students age 23 or younger, or with elderly parents living with them, didn’t get the extra money added to their previous stimulus payments. That’s not the case for third-round stimulus checks.

How To Make Sure You Receive Your Credits As Soon As Possible

The Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet requires that you know the specific amounts you were supposed to receive, according to the IRS. By doing the investigation and calculation work in advance, youll most likely end up getting your stimulus check and tax refund faster.

To get it correct, that cannot be overemphasized, Steber says. These Recovery Rebate Credits are real cash, and they sent out hundreds of millions in the two tranches. If you did in fact receive it and forget about it, it could add weeks to your tax return timeline.

Your tax refund will be passed more quickly and safely if you electronically file and provide a direct deposit, the IRS says.

Typically, the IRS is good at sending out refunds within a couple of weeks within electronically filing, Bronnenkant says.

Not included in 2020s Recovery Rebate Credit is a third stimulus payment worth $1,400 or more, distributed to Americans beginning in mid-March after President Joe Biden signed the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan. Taxpayers will most likely have to wait until 2021 to claim those missing relief payments, Jaeger says.

More than 9 million Americans could be owed money from the Internal Revenue Service. And today is an important deadline for those who want to claim their funds for free.

In mid-October, the IRS began sending letters to U.S. residents who appear to have qualified for various benefits but did not claim them by filing a 2021 federal income tax return. This includes people who could be eligible to claim some or all of the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, the Child Tax Credit, the Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax credits depending on their personal and family situation.

The Recovery Rebate Credit, available to those who missed last years third round of stimulus payments, is worth up to $1,400 for each qualifying adult or child. The Child Tax Credit can be worth as much as $3,600 per child and the Earned Income Tax Credit is worth as much as $6,728 based on family size.

The only way to receive the benefits is to file a 2021 tax return even if you arent normally required to do so. In general, the letters were sent to those people who dont typically have to file a tax return due to the exceptionally low incomes as reported on Forms W-2, 1099s and other third-party statements available to the IRS.

Tax season is already underway , which means it’s time to gather your W-2s and 1099 forms. And this year, you may also need IRS notices 1444 and 1444-B, which verify how much stimulus check money you’ve received with the first and second checks .

How Much Will Americans Receive From The Irs

The amount of money Americans may receive from the IRS varies depending on the tax credits. People who received the letters may qualify for one or all of the tax credits, including the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit.

Under the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, single taxpayers making less than $75,000 and married couples earning less than $150,000 could receive the full amount of $1,400 for each eligible person. Each qualifying child listed on the tax return will also receive $1,400. This means a family of four could get as much as $5,600 in stimulus payments.

The enhanced Child Tax Credit, expanded through President Joe Biden‘s American Rescue Plan, sent out up to $3,600 for each qualifying child under the age of 6.
