A fourth stimulus payment isnt on the agenda in 2021.

Families and individuals across the country have received three stimulus checks since the start of the pandemic, but a fourth stimulus check isnt likely to happen. There is, however, a petition calling for $2,000 recurring checks to all Americans, which has collected more than 2.9 million signatures, but Congress has no official plans to approve another stimulus payment at this time. But many families are still facing numerous hardships, especially since the enhanced unemployment benefits have expired and delta variant cases are rising.

To close the gap in federal support, several state governments have developed programs to give residents additional financial relief. Millions of Californians received a second round of Golden State Stimulus checks , and low-income are eligible for direct payments of $300 or $500. Educators received bonuses in states like Florida, Michigan and Tennessee, and some front-line workers in Vermont also received checks.

Support For A Fourth Stimulus Check

A group of Democratic Senators, including Ron Wyden of Oregon, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Bernie Sanders of Vermont, sent a letter to President Joe Biden at the end of March requesting recurring direct payments and automatic unemployment insurance extensions tied to economic conditions.

As the Senators reasoned in their letter, this crisis is far from over, and families deserve certainty that they can put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads. Families should not be at the mercy of constantly-shifting legislative timelines and ad hoc solutions.

An earlier letter to President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris from 53 Representatives, led by Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, carved out a similar position. Recurring direct payments until the economy recovers will help ensure that people can meet their basic needs, provide racially equitable solutions, and shorten the length of the recession.

Additional co-signers included New Yorks Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Michigans Rashida Tlaib, two other notable names among House Progressives. The letter didnt place a number on the requested stimulus payments. But a tweet soon after put it at $2,000 per month for the length of the pandemic.

$2,000 monthly payments until the pandemic is over.

A Recession Could Spur Another Stimulus Round

There’s a reason lawmakers aren’t approving more stimulus checks right now: Economic conditions don’t justify it. Sure, inflation is soaring, and many people are struggling. But the reality is that the U.S. labor market is still holding strong. And since unemployment levels are low, we’re unlikely to see a stimulus round come through.

In fact, it’s easy to argue that a round of stimulus checks could make inflation worse. A big reason we’re in this mess is that many Americans were flush with cash last year thanks to stimulus checks at a time when supply chains had started shutting down. That created a disconnect between supply and demand that drove prices upward.

At this point, supply chains thankfully aren’t as battered as they were last year. But still, if more money is pumped into the economy, it could cause an even wider gap between supply and demand, thereby worsening the problem.

So what can fix the issue of inflation? A reduction in consumer spending. The Federal Reserve has been raising interest rates in an attempt to make that happen. But if consumers start to balk at the higher cost of borrowing and curb their spending in a big way, it could fuel a recession, along with a massive uptick in unemployment.

Now, if a recession hits and jobless levels rise, that could drive lawmakers to approve another federal stimulus package. After all, it’s been done before. But that’s probably not something we should hope for.

The goal of Democrats was to pass the bill by this Sunday, March 14. Thats when extra unemployment assistance and other pandemic aid expires.

With Biden signing the plan on Thursday, Democrats have met that goal.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki announced shortly after Biden signed the bill that the IRS and Treasury Department are working hard to get payments out. She said some people will see direct deposits hit their bank accounts as early as this weekend.

This is of course just the first wave, but some people in he country will start seeing those direct deposits in their bank accounts this weekend and payments to eligible Americans will continue throughout the course of the next several weeks, Psaki explained.

The IRS said Friday the payments were already being processed and concurred that direct deposits would start arriving this weekend.

During the first round of stimulus checks in April 2020, it took about two weeks for the federal government to start distributing the money. It took around one week for the second round of checks, worth $600, in early January partly because the infrastructure from the first stimulus was in place.

One factor that could complicate things is that this is also tax season. The IRS will be trying to send out stimulus checks while also processing incoming tax returns and calculating refunds.

There Is Little Talk Of More Payments Despite Record Covid

Covid-19 cases in the US are continuing to rise follow latest news with never before seen numbers of cases rocking the country. The latest national figure, from January 9, had 313,061 new cases. While this increase, more than 200 percent higher than two weeks ago, is large, it isnt reflected by a similar increase in deaths. Compared to two weeks ago, 16 percent more people have died. Cases are looking like they are peaking, but reported cases are always lower on weekends, so a fuller picture will be known later in the week.

While the situation was looking especially grim at the turn of the new year, vaccines are continuing to be effective against serious illness. Despite cases being at the worst level of the pandemic, there has been no move in Congress to pass another stimulus check.

    How contagious is Omicron?

    Sam Ghali, M.D.

A more pressing concern has been the amount of people needing to be off work while isolating with the disease. This has been a contributing factor in the CDC reducing the recommended time to isolate with the illness. Now, people need only isolate for five days, with no requirement to test negative before returning to work. This has garnered criticism as people are potentially being pushed back into the workplace while they could be infectious to others.

Will There Be Another Stimulus Check From The Federal Government

Most people agree that getting another big stimulus check from the federal government is a long shot at this point. Still, some lawmakers keep pushing for another stimulus check to help Americans who are struggling to rebuild thanks to COVID-19 and its economic impact. And with the Delta and Omicron variants out therewould another stimulus check happen for everyone? You never know. Only time will tell, really. A lot of people didnt think wed see a third stimulus check eitherbut it happened.

With the economy and jobs both on the upswing, the need for a stimulus check is way less than its been since the start of the pandemic. Not to mention, a lot of people have been getting extra cash each month from the Child Tax Credit. Add all of that up and its easy to see that there might not be another stimulus check. But if there is one, dont worrywell let you know.

Who Is Eligible For The Second Stimulus Check

Eligibility is primarily based on four requirements:

    1. Income: The income requirements to receive the full payment are the same as the first stimulus check. There is no minimum income needed to qualify for the payment. Households with adjusted gross income up to $75,000 for individuals will receive the full payment. This stimulus payment starts to phaseout for people with higher earnings. The second stimulus check maximum income limit is lower than the first stimulus check. Single filers who earned more than $87,000 in 2019 are ineligible for the second stimulus check.

    Stimulus Blamed For High Inflation

The final round of $1,400 direct payments which started in March 2021 along with the massive amounts of covid-19 relief funds injected into the US economy have been blamed for the higher-than-normal inflation afflicting the nation. The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco looked at the effect of the American Rescue Plan specifically on inflation.

It found that Bidens stimulus is temporarily ratcheting up inflation, but not causing overheating as has been suggested. Their analysis found that the ARP, is expected to cause inflation to increase by about 0.3 percentage point in 2021 and by a bit more than 0.2 percentage point in 2022. The impact in 2023 is negligible.

Other factors are helping push up prices on just about everything, a major source has been disruptions to supply chains caused by the pandemic. This caused manufacturers to scramble to secure scarce supplies of inputs to make their products. Americans in turn have been scooping up consumer goods with excess savings they acquired during the lockdown increasing demand on limited supplies.
