Stimulus Check Was For Less Than Expected

If you didnt receive the amount you expected, that could be because your 2020 tax return hadnt been processed when the payment was sent. The IRS began sending out plus-up payments at the end of March to top up previously made payments based on 2019 tax returns as the agency processes 2020 tax returns. These will continue to go out weekly throughout the year as 2020 tax returns are processed.

You will want to keep an eye out for a letter from the IRS even if it doesn’t contain a paper stimulus check or an EIP debit card. After the IRS issues a payment, the agency will send a confirmation letter called a Notice 1444. You can also set up an online account with the IRS, if you havent already. There you can check any payments that you have received from the IRS.

You can find additional information at the IRS frequently asked questionsregarding lost, stolen, destroyed or not received stimulus checks.

Theres Still Time To Claim

There is some good news: Theres still time for people who missed out on their stimulus checks to claim them, the report noted.

Individuals with little or no income, and therefore not required to pay taxes, have until November 15 to complete a simplified tax return to get their payments, the GAO said.

Theres also still time for people to claim the expanded Child Tax Credit, which was provided last year to eligible families. That credit provided as much as $3,600 to families with children under 17, but parents who didnt receive the payments last year have only until November 15 to claim them.

To claim a missing stimulus payment, people should go to the IRS website for Economic Impact Payments, the official name for the program, and follow the instructions there. Youll have to file a simplified tax return to receive the money.

Parents who still have missing Child Tax Credits from 2021 can go to the GetCTC.org website to claim them.

However, people who are required to file taxes due to their income and who missed the April 15 tax filing deadline have until October 17 to claim the payments, the GAO said. October 17 is the deadline for filing 2021 tax returns if you requested an extension from the IRS.

The Agency Has A Backlog Of 29 Million Tax Returns Its Holding For Manual Processing According To The National Taxpayer Advocate

If you need help with your taxes, good luck reaching an IRS representative on the telephone.

So far this tax season, only about 1 out of every 50 calls have gotten through to an IRS customer service representative on the agencys 1040 toll-free line , according to Erin M. Collins, the national taxpayer advocate for the independent Taxpayer Advocate Service, an organization within the IRS that helps taxpayers resolve issues with the agency.

Collins praised the IRS for soldiering through a tough tax season compounded by a pandemic, but she also outlined major concerns with how the agency is handling taxpayer calls and returns.

From a taxpayers perspective, it feels like their return has fallen into a black hole: they do not know what is going on, when they will get their refund, why it is being delayed, or how to get answers or help, Collins wrote in a recent blog post.

This filing season, the IRS has seen an increase of over 300 percent in calls to its Accounts Management toll-free lines, Collins said in an interview. But IRS employees had answered just 2 percent of the more than 70 million taxpayer calls to the 1040 telephone line as of April 10. On average, people spend 20 minutes on hold, although many taxpayers have reported much longer wait times. Others just give up and hang up.

Irs Phone Number To Call About Stimulus Check

Stimulus Check was designed to providefinancial assistance to the needy. The government of Joe Biden declared the program in the month of March. The program stressed struggling households.

Families that struggled with the adversities of the pandemic were given importance. The federal government of America laid down the eligibility criteria for receipt of Stimulus Checks.

Citizens earning below $75000 will be provided with the maximum benefits. As the income would go higher, the amount of assistance would decrease. For households making over $160,000 annually, there was no provision for Stimulus Checks. Despite all these restrictions, some of the wealthiest families received the money.

The pandemic has plagued the lives of the common people to a great extent. The household has had difficulties in meeting essential needs. New checks will surely cater to the needs of the common people in a great manner.

Necessities are becoming hard to afford for some. Debts and rents are also increasingly adding up to the pressure. A recent study has shown that a large number of people could not clear their debts.

The number of rent defaulters has also increased. Surprisingly enough, the government has a chunk of the rent assistance money unclaimed. Another set of stimulus checks that have been left unclaimed is the third round of checks.

File For A Recovery Rebate Credit

Should you be unable to get a status update on the stimulus checks, there still are other options, like filing for a Recovery Rebate Credit.

If you didnt get the first or second payment or you received less than the full amount that youre eligible for you can claim the credit on your 2020 tax returns, even if you dont normally file.

This means you need to add up the amount of payments you did receive in order to determine the credit you would have otherwise been eligible for on your returns.

Can You Use The Portal If You Didnt File A Tax Return

You couldnt use the Get My Payment tool to track the status of your first stimulus check if you didnt file a 2018 or 2019 federal income tax return. However, there was another online tool that non-filers could use to give the IRS with the information it needed to process a payment.

The non-filers tool wasnt used for second stimulus checks, though. Instead, if you didnt file a 2019 tax return, and you didnt use the non-filers tool to get your first-round payment, then you have to wait to claim your second stimulus check money as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2020 return.

The IRS is not using the non-filers tool for third-round stimulus checks, either. As a result, if you dont file a 2019 or 2020 tax return, youll have to claim any money youre owed as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2021 return, which you wont file until next year. However, you can avoid having to wait until next year by filing a 2020 return before the May 17, 2021, deadline.
