Who Qualifies For An Inflation Relief Payment

Roughly 23 million California residents are eligible for the rebate plan, which has been set up in three tiers based on the adjusted gross income on your 2020 California state tax return. Residents who filed individually and made $250,000 or less or couples who filed jointly and made $500,000 or less qualify for a refund. In addition to income requirements, though, residents must have filed their 2020 tax refund by Oct. 15, 2021. You must have lived in the state of California for at least half of the 2020 tax year and still be a California resident on the date the payment is issued. Individual filers who earned over $250,000 and couples who made more than $500,000 combined in 2020 aren’t eligible, nor is anyone claimed as a dependent by someone else in the 2020 tax year.

An estimated 900,000 stimulus checks will be sent out before the New Year

There will be 900,000 stimulus checks sent out to California residents between now and the New Year, with these being worth up to $1,100 in value.

The second, expanded Golden State Stimulus II check program saw nine million Californians become eligible to receive some financial aid from the state.

Last Friday, December 10, saw the last round get underway with direct deposits, with the total value of the all the payments being $575 million.

In this batch, a total of 803,000 checks have been sent to eligible households – 9,000 were direct deposits and 794,000 were paper checks.

The Golden State Stimulus II payments began in October and will continue to be sent out until January 11, 2022.

These payments have been going out on a fortnightly basis – every two weeks – and when you receive it depends on your ZIP code.

How Likely Is A Fourth Stimulus Check

Dont hold your breath, according to Wall Street analysts.

For one, the Biden administration has focused on infrastructure spending to spark economic growth, betting that an investment in roads, trains and other direct investments will help get people back to work and spur the ongoing recovery.

Secondly, economists have pointed fingers at relief efforts such as the three rounds of stimulus checks for contributing to inflation. Because Americans had cash in their pockets, they boosted spending on goods such as furniture, cars and electronics. Combine that with the supply-chain crunch, and the result was sharply higher inflation, according to economists.

Without new stimulus efforts on the horizon, its likely that inflation could moderate in 2022, according to Brad McMillan, the chief investment officer at Commonwealth Financial Network. One cause of inflation has been an explosion of demand driven by federal stimulus, he noted in a December report. But that stimulus has now ended.

He added, Yes, we will continue to face inflation and supply problems, but they are moderating and will keep doing so.

But our state government has been raking in the cash. California has a record $76 billion budget surplus for the current fiscal year, and is projecting $31 billion in excess revenues for the fiscal year that begins in July.

Nationwide, lower-income adults have been hit especially hard by the Covid-19 economic crunch, while wealthier Americans have been left largely unscathed. That trend holds in California, where we also tax our wealthy at very high rates.

California Inflation Relief: Heres When Youll Get Paid In November

To help California residents battle inflation, the state started sending Middle-Class Tax Refund payments early October. However, some residents are still waiting for the one-time payments, and the state has just issued new guidance as to when they will receive them.

Find: States Whose Economies Are Failing vs. States Whose Economies Are Thriving

Middle-Class Tax Refund payments have been sent out to Californians to help with the high price of gas and cost of living. Californians could receive payments between $200 to $1,050, California Representative Jim Costa tweeted Oct. 24.

And on Oct. 25, he tweeted: ICYMI: The first round of middle-class tax refund payments has been sent out starting October 7 through October 25. Those who are eligible for relief will receive their payment via direct deposit or mailed debit card.

The State of California Franchise Tax Board explained on its website that if you are eligible, you will automatically receive a payment which is expected to be issued between October 2022 and January 2023.

What If My Income Has Changed

A lot can change in two years. What if you make significantly less now than you did in 2020? Could you qualify for a larger payment?

“No,” the California Franchise Tax Board tells Nexstar. “The Middle Class Tax Refund legislation requires eligibility to be based on a complete filed 2020 California state income tax return.”

That means regardless of any change in income lower or higher you’re locked into receiving the payment size that corresponds with your 2020 income. There is no way to appeal the Franchise Tax Board for an exception.

    Second Golden State Stimulus Requirements

Why many low-income people in California will not qualify for the Golden State Stimulus?

    1. You must have filed your 2020 state income tax return by October 15, 2021, and have a California AGI of a maximum of $75,000. You can see your California AGI on Line 17 of Form 540. If you filed Form 540 EZ, refer to Line 16. Since your AGI cant exceed $75,000 to receive the second stimulus, your wages or the income earned cannot exceed the same figure.

    2. You must be a California resident meaning that you must have lived in the State of California for more than half of the tax year. You also must be a California resident at the time of the payment issued. What this means is that if you were out of the state for more than three months during the tax year, you wont get the second stimulus.

    3. You must not be claimed as a dependent by another taxpayer. If youre under the age of 18, you arent qualified for the stimulus checks.
