Impact Of Not Filing A Tax Return On Your Ability To Receive A Stimulus Check

Stimulus Checks for Social Security Beneficiaries Being Sent Out This Week | NBC10

If your only source of income is federal disability benefits, there is a good chance you did not file a personal income tax return in recent years. This is because individuals are not required to file typical tax returns when their income levels are below a specific threshold and/or rely exclusively on federal benefits. According to the CARES Act , individuals who relied exclusively on disability benefits would still be able to get a stimulus check, even if they did not file a tax return in recent years.

Who Is Eligible For The Covid

The 2nd stimulus check was provided in the amounts of $600 per individual, $1,200 per couple, and $600 for children. Individuals with an adjusted gross income that falls at or below $75,000, $112,500 for heads of household, or couples who earn below $150,000 are eligible to receive the COVID-19 relief funds. Those who earn above these amounts may still receive a stimulus check, but the amounts will be reduced.

The Third Stimulus Check Will Be Bigger For Dependents

Under the CARES Act, in the first round of stimulus payments, you received a payment of $500 for every dependent child under the age of 16. And not everyone received the money. It was $600 in the second round.

But for the third stimulus check, dependents in all age groups are eligible for $1,400, including college-age children and adult relatives who are older.

People qualified for the initial two stimulus checks under various criteria werent obligated to file tax returns in 2019 or 2019. This included beneficiaries under the SSI, SSDI, Railroad Retirement, and Veteran Affairs benefits and those who receive Social Security retirement. The CARES Act of March 2020 stipulated that the stimulus checks were supposed to come automatically, without filing a tax return.

You might not have received your payment or received a lesser amount because it was withheld by the tax authorities or due to omission. You can now receive the previous amount by claiming it in the 2020 tax returns. It is necessary to file a return with the IRS to claim it. Request a trace in case the money was dispatched but did not reach you.

Dependents Will Qualify For More Money Than Ever With The Third Round Of Checks

For the first stimulus check under the CARES Act, qualified people with dependents age 16 or younger were eligible for up to $500 per child dependent, but not everyone actually received that extra money. For the second stimulus check, as long as your children were 16 years old or younger, they contributed $600 toward the final total of your households second stimulus check.

Heres who the IRS counts as an adult to receive their own stimulus check.

How To Claim Missing Stimulus Money For Your Dependents

If you used the IRS Non-Filers tool from May 5 through Aug. 15 of 2020, the IRS shouldve automatically issued the catch-up payment for your dependents in October 2020. If you received your original stimulus money by direct deposit, you shouldve gotten the catch-up payment the same way. Others would have received it in the mail.

If you filed for your missing dependent money by Nov. 21, 2020, the payment should have arrived by the end of 2020 in the same way you received your first payment . If you missed the deadline, your check should be included on your 2020 tax return in 2021, if you file for a Recovery Rebate Credit.

To check the status of your or your dependents payment for the first or second payment, you can check your IRS account.

Qualifying Children And Economic Impact Payments

Social Security stimulus checks arrive

Those who filed taxes in 2018 or 2019 may receive an additional $500 for each qualifying dependent child. If a qualified child was not listed on a recipients tax return, they may not receive additional payments until the 2020 tax year. Recipients of SSI or SSDI benefits who missed the non-filer payment deadline may use the IRS non-filer payment information tool to add a qualified child to their tax status. Additionally, those who missed the non-filer payment deadline could also report the qualified child in a 2020 tax return to receive a $500 payment.

One of the more pertinent features of the HEROES act is that it would make all dependents, including older teens and college students, eligible for the $1,200 per-person stimulus payments. Under the newly proposed act, children and dependents who were previously ineligible for the first round of stimulus payments would qualify for economic assistance.

Stimulus Checks For 30 Million Could Be Coming Soon After Ssa Sends Files To Irs

WASHINGTON The Social Security Administration has now sent files to the Internal Revenue Service that could free up outstanding stimulus payments to nearly 30 million Americans, lawmakers said Thursday.

Earlier this week, a key House committee asked the IRS and Social Security Administration to explain why the $1,400 stimulus checks from the American Rescue Plan have been slow to get out to people on Social Security and other government programs. On Wednesday, the Democratic leaders on the House Ways and Means Committee demanded the Social Security Administration turn over payment files to the IRS within 24 hours.

In a statement, committee chair Richard Neal, D-Mass., said they were notified Thursday morning that the SSA has transmitted the necessary payment files to the IRS that have been blocking the sending of stimulus payments to nearly 30,000,000 Americans.

Neal went on to blame SSA Commissioner Andrew Saul for the delay. In a post on the agencys website Thursday afternoon, Saul disputed the allegation and said employees have been working day and night with the IRS to get files of Social Security and SSI recipients ready.

Saul wrote that the files were delivered Thursday, more than a week sooner than a similar file was given to the IRS during the first round of stimulus checks in 2020.

He added that they worked to ensure the updated files sent to the IRS have accurate banking information for recipients and removed individuals who have died.

Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic Covid

The Social Security Administration announced today that Supplemental Security Income recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department. Treasury anticipates these automatic payments no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRSs webpage at www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

Social Security Expedites Decisions For People With Severe Disabilities Agency Adds To Compassionate Allowances List

Stimulus checks for SSDI, SSI beneficiaries: 12 things to know about ...

Andrew Saul, Commissioner of Social Security, today announced five new Compassionate Allowances conditions: Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumors, GM1 Gangliosidosis – Infantile and Juvenile Forms, Nicolaides-Baraister Syndrome, Rubinstein-Tybai Syndrome, and Secondary Adenocarcinoma of the Brain. Compassionate Allowances is a program to quickly identify severe medical conditions and diseases that meet Social Securitys standards for disability benefits.

Social Securitys top priority is to serve the public, and we remain committed to improving the disability determination process for Americans, said Commissioner Saul. Our Compassionate Allowances program gets us one step closer to reaching our goals by helping us accelerate the disability process for people who are likely to get approved for benefits due to the severity of their condition.

The Compassionate Allowances program quickly identifies claims where the applicants condition or disease clearly meets Social Securitys statutory standard for disability. Due to the severe nature of many of these conditions, these claims are often allowed based on medical confirmation of the diagnosis alone. To date, more than 600,000 people with severe disabilities have been approved through this accelerated, policy-compliant disability process. Over the last decade, the list has grown to a total of 242 conditions, including certain cancers, adult brain disorders, and a number of rare disorders that affect children.

How Stimulus Checks Will Be Distributed To Disability Benefit Recipients

Social Security disability benefit recipients who were not required to submit a federal income tax return in 2018 or 2019 will receive the stimulus check automatically based on data contained within a 1099 benefit statement. This means no additional documentation will be required for most disability benefit recipients in order to receive the stimulus payment. The payment could very well be directly deposited into your account.

The automatic disbursement was not the original plan for these stimulus checks. In fact, the IRS initially planned to require individuals, including those who rely exclusively on disability benefit income, to complete a form to receive a stimulus check. However, after public pressure, the IRS agreed to simply use the 1099 benefit statements to retrieve the information needed to send out the stimulus payments.

Stimulus Payments And Social Security Disability

A stimulus payment does not affect your eligibility for SSDI or SSI. As a general rule, SSDI eligibility is not affected by the money you receive from sources other than employment or self-employment, so stimulus money will not cause you to lose benefits received through SSDI. If you have questions about your benefits, get in touch with an SSDI lawyer at MJ Ellis Disability Law.

If you receive SSI benefits, the Social Security Administration does not treat stimulus payments as income. It also will not count it as a resource for 12 months, so you are free to spend it as you wish. Talk to your SSI lawyer for more information about stimulus money and your benefits.

How Will Child Tax Credit Payments Affect Your SSI And SSDI Benefits?

The 2021 Child Tax Credit payments represent a refund of taxes. They are not, according to Social Security, income that would affect your Social Security disability benefits through either SSI or SSDI. If you receive benefits through SSI, you have 12 months to spend the credit payments before what remains will be counted as a resource.
