Some frontline workers received a one-time payment of $488 in October, thanks to a bill signed by Gov. Tim Walz in early May.

Eligible workers must have worked at least 120 hours in Minnesota between March 15, 2020, and June 30, 2021, and werent eligible for remote work.

Workers with direct Covid-19 patient-care responsibilities must have had an adjusted gross income of less than $175,000 between December 2019 and January 2022 workers without direct patient-care responsibilities must have had an adjusted gross income of less than $85,000 annually for the same period. Applications for the payment are now closed.

Congress Previously Acted Quickly To Get Relief To Americans Affected By The Pandemic

When the US and the world were put on lockdown, millions of workers were confined to their homes sending the unemployment rate skyrocketing to 14.7 percent in April 2020. Congress acted rapidly to pass the 2020 CARES Act to get relief to businesses and households, including the first round of stimulus checks of up to $1,200 for eligible adults and $500 per qualifying kid under age 17.

Congress also passed generous enhanced pandemic unemployment benefits which kept households afloat where workers businesses were shuttered or they had to stay home because of pandemic-induced upheavals in their lives. Those benefits were extended in 2020 and again in 2021 but have now ceased, being seen by some as the reason behind a severe labor shortage in the US.

Two more rounds of stimulus checks were also passed in the interim of up to $2,000 in total. They are credited with supercharging the economic recovery which had begun to lag at the end of 2020 as a new variant caused infections to surge. But the last one has also been blamed for the current high rate of inflation.

What If My Mailing Address Changed Since I Received My Previous Stimulus Checks How Will I Get My Third Stimulus Check

If you are expecting to receive your third stimulus check by mail, it will be mailed to the last address you filed with the IRS. If your address has changed since then, there are different options you can take to make sure your stimulus check gets to you:

Option 1: File your 2020 federal tax return to update your address. If you havent filed your 2020 tax return yet, this is an easy way to update your address. File a tax return with your current address and your payment will be sent through the mail once the IRS receives your updated address.

Option 2: Provide your banking information in the IRS Get My Payment tool. If the post office was unable to deliver your stimulus check, it will be returned to the IRS. Two to three weeks after the payment has been issued, Get My Payment will display the message Need More Information. You will have the option to have your payment reissued as a direct deposit by providing your banking information.

If you dont provide your banking information, the IRS will mail your payment once your address is updated.

Option 3: Notify the IRS that your address has changed by telephone, an IRS form, or a written statement. It can take 4-6 weeks for the IRS to process your request.

Can Biden Forgive Student Loans With An Executive Order

So, any student loan forgiveness thats happened under Biden has either come from enforcing or making minor tweaks to laws that were already in place before he became president. And those laws were approved by Congress.

On the other hand, Bidens plan to forgive up to $20,000 worth of student loans has definitely not been approved by Congress. Many Democrats have been pushing him to use his executive authority to forgive as much as $50,000 for each borrower. But its not super clear if the president has the power to forgive student loan debt with an executive order.

Biden himself has gone back and forth on what he thinks he can actually do. And House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in July 2021, People think that the president of the United States has the power for debt forgiveness. He does not. He can postpone. He can delay. But he does not have that power. That has to be an act of Congress.11

But now Bidens administration says the Heroes Act gives them the authority to cancel student loan debt. The Heroes Act of 2003 is a law that allows the Secretary of Education to waive or modify any statutory or regulatory provision applicable to the student financial assistance programs to help borrowers during a national emergency.12 Say what? That basically means the Secretary of Education can make changes to the federal student loan program if it will help borrowers financially get through a widespread crisis. But what changes can be made? Well, thats up for interpretation.

He Extended Student Loan Coronavirus Relief

On his first day in office, President Biden extended student loan relief through September 2021.5 And as the months passed, Biden extended the pause on federal student loan payments and interest again and againnow through December 31, 2022.6 But this was only possible because the CARES Act made it possible back in March 2020. To get this payment you must have filed a 2018 or 2019 tax return and claimed the child as dependent ANDthe child must be younger than 17-years-old at the end of 2020. They must also be related to you by blood, marriage, or adoption . There is no limit to the number of dependents who can qualify for the additional $500 in one household.

This age limit is much younger than what is used by the IRS in the qualifying child test where a child must be younger than 19 years old or be a student younger than 24 years old as of the end of the calendar year. Hence the confusion being caused by this. So just remember if your child or eligible dependent is 17 or over you cannot claim the stimulus payment for them.

College Kids and High School Seniors
